Ghost in the Shell, and consider some of Miyazaki's films. I suppose if you want action, Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa come to mind first. I'd recommend just watching them all though.

On movies for Heen: you might enjoy the Samurai X or Hellsing OVAs for action. I think generally OVAs are similar to movies in terms of size/length.
On the note of movies like 5cm per second and toki wo kakeru shoujo, I also liked The Place Promised in Our Early Days.

Omg at Bakemonogatari 12 + Show Spoiler +I've been waiting for more Senjougahara since she's been absent for a while. There were so many scenes over the past few episodes where I expected her to spontaneously show up and be all pissed off. Such as when Sengoku handed Araragi Kanbaru's borrowed underwear and swimsuit, I thought Senjougahara would suddenly appear and threaten to gouge his eyes out with chopsticks or something. Fortunately 12 does not disappoint. A lot more classic Senjougahara torturing Araragi through conversation. The car scene with her father...so awkward...love it!

If you just like Clannad the pure emotional binge aspect of Kanon can feel excessive and turn you off, though that's just my opinion on the matter. Just to make sure to get the KyoAni Kanon, the Toei one isn't really worth your time
So where does Air fit into this hierarchy of Key/KyoAni VN animes?
|
It's the weakest series that Kyoani has put out imo. It's still decent, but there's a reason that people talk about Kanon and Clannad so much before anybody mentions Air~ imo.
Watch it if you've got nothing lined up - I guess?
edit - That all sounds too harsh to Air. It's a good series. It is not on the same level as Kanon and Clannad, but it's a good series.
So, just marathoned Spice and Wolf season 2. Not as good as the first, but if you liked the first, I can recommend this one anyways just because the dialogue is excellent. (to my uncultured ears, anyways.) Does anybody know anything about a plausible season 3?

Thanks guys, I've started downloading them at a whooping 32kb/sec lol

I liked air... but it is a somewhat odd show. There are a fair number of people who LOVE air though, as in its their favorite anime ever (and they've seen say 100+ animes).
Ef also fits into that sort of drama genre.
And Kanon is ridiculously overdramatic, but I thought the drama worked really well.
Rewatching Haibane Renmei atm, and appreciating it more and more. Amazing show.

Ive kind of noticed, i only recently got into anime (i think the first i ever watched was chobits, then death note, then the WHOLE of naruto)
But recently ive been watching only kyo-ani ones and they are all really good haha. Is kyo-ani awesome or something

I agree, Kyoto Animation is an amazing company, and the same goes with Key as well. Has anyone played Planetarian?

Air is probably only considered worse than Kanon and Clannad because it's a much slower series that takes it's own pace to slowly drift through the anime. However, when you actually finish the anime and some of the plot details are revealed, then you'll find that the pace is well suited for the story that Air is trying to tell.
It's a matter of taste really.

Obzy, there are 12 vols of light novel out so far, season 2 covers, if memory serves, up to like 5 at most, so plenty of content to go around, they'll probably capitalize it eventually.
Humbug, I haven't played Planetarian (for some weird reason), but I probably will fit it in at some point, having the 10th anniversary edition sitting around and not play it is almost rude to Key
Try not to mention too much KyoAni here before Shauni busts an artery or two.

Not too much? I've tolerated it for like 20 pages straight now without saying a word. And what the hell, how is Clannad and Kanon better than Air? Kanon is emphasising on harem too much, plus the main character is the least sympathetic main character ever (he beats his women) and a lot of the dialogues are so stupid. Kyoani made the anime even worse than the previous one.
And I don't see why everyone is praising Clannad so. While it's a mildly enjoyable slice of life comedy, it drags on too much and the drama feels so forced. It was as tearjerking as playing The Sims.
Air, on the other hand relies on atmosphere and emotion. While it might be a less polished than Kanon and Clannad to some, it actually works to Air's advantage. It doesn't structure itself into harem-arcs, it's more like it tells a cute little story without too much fuss. Of course Air is also flawed, because this is KyoAni (and Key!), but its easily their best show.
I've seen people RATE the harem characters in these shows. I think it even happened in this thread. Am I the only one utterly disgusted by this?

I'm not sure I understand this, can you rephrase or give an example?

I'm not sure I understand this, can you rephrase or give an example? Oh I mean that in most good anime series, characters are generally dynamic or subjective. If we're able to rate characters objectively, doesn't it prove that the characters are generally unbelievable? Like you can't really rate Shinji, Rei, and Asuka on a scale of 1-10. It just isn't done. As a lesser example, trying to rate Tsukasa or Lain on 1-10 doesn't really work either because of the nature of these characters that make them real or symbolic.
But for an anime like Clannad where the characters can be rated from 1-10, it kind of says something about the character design doesn't it?

Yes, the characters in Clannad and Kanon are made for the viewers. It's like they're throwing in different personalities to please all the fans. In a more realistic anime (character wise), a character doesn't have to be likable at all - you just don't look at them in that way. I just dislike shows where you attach everything to the characters and try to make them carry the show. I'm not sure what we disagree on here however Mr Mystlord...
|
Developing a show along per character lines is a strategy that works, but my preferences on this are like Shauni's. Unifying the actual show with themes that aren't blatantly pinned to only x or y character really... empowers the show. The poignancy of whatever messages a show's characters deliver is a function of the environment (the "rest of the show") and the presentation.
I preferred Clannad over Kanon and Air, but none of them particularly resonated with me. I never really understood what these shows were trying to tell me. Still, I shouldn't complain when many viewers apparently get something out of them.

the characters in Clannad and Kanon are made for the viewers. The characters in Air aren't?
In a more realistic anime (character wise) Yeah, but how many of those are there? I took a list of all the animes I've watched, and came up with 6/30 that had even CLOSE to "realistic characters". TV shows don't have realistic characters. Realistic characters are often less interesting to watch.
the main character is the least sympathetic main character ever ...are you kidding? I think Itou Makoto would like to have a word with you, but regardless, HUH? He isn't that unsympathetic, and certainly not that unlikable.
(he beats his women) ?.?.? When was that?
Kyoani made the anime even worse than the previous one. You are the first person I have ever heard say that O.o
It (Air) doesn't structure itself into harem-arcs, ...yes it does.
Honestly, you seem so angry that a lot of your complaints are just factually incorrect...

lol here we go again, I am not even going to bother this time, we all have our preferences, the like for Clannad is overwhelmingly against the dislike for it, suck it up. By all means continue, but it isn't about to change anyone's mind (like any other internet discussion).
While I agree with the critique about realism, Triangle is right though, realism in character design is boring unless you can carry it all the way through to extremely life-like characters. At that point, most others will accuse those characters as flat and boring. Realism in scenario might as well as be impossible, shall we try to make anime reality shows? It is certainly a valid criticism, but it isn't one with a practical solution.
EchOne, that might be the case, but it is also impractical. To so thoroughly marry a show or any piece of work to a theme is fine, but that isn't what this market is looking for. We get a few oddballs every so often that manages to do such a thing and turn profitable, but for the most part it doesn't garner enough appeal. It is a business, people write scripts to be popular and to sell to the mass, to risk losing mass appeal means you are not going to devote as much resources to it. While we might see more of that in the manga/light novel market for otaku culture, largely thanks to the Japanese culture for self-publication. It doesn't translate to getting animated.
