Well i only just started really watching a lot of anime so clannad is great atm, almost finished it ep 20 of the after story
I'm just a bit superficial and looking for entertainment, clannad is really enjoyable for me atm i'm not trying to look into it too hard. Though really its more like clanSAD right now its really tear jerking :< But then again, if the characters wern't like that, and it didn't have all that stuff, then i wouldn't find it as enjoyable. I think they are kinda designed to stike notes with male adolescents anyway right? Thats probably part of why it works
Also i agree it is completely unrealistic, i mean nobody picks up friends that easily, all the girls wooing over him and liking him all the time regardless of what he does, impossible social scenarios, all the miracle stuff. But i guess that is part of what makes it fun ^^
I dunno. Maybe I've been over-exposed to hollywood and American primetime TV, but Clannad never struck me as shallow or unoriginal. Calculated for a target audience? Very much so. But the execution was very well done, and the show does have both depth and meaning.
When I think of plot-weak shows that are over-trope'd and don't bring much new to the table, I think of stuff like CSI clones. I guess it might just be because I'm more used to the Western tropes than the Japanese ones, but even though there's obviously lots of characters and plot elements solely included to pander to certain fan groups, Clannad still feels like a quality show with a quality message to me.

You can't really compare Western shows to most animes. Most Western shows rarely have too much continuity between episodes. The shows themselves are very... well... episodic .
Clannad doesn't make you think, it's just enjoyable... You know what, my mind has gone blank for some reason. Oh, and Clannad rarely has fan service. I don't think KyoAni is trying to pander to certain fan groups at all.

What we need is another anime with a story as disjointed as FLCL as the starting point, but all of the staff/writers are put on hallucinogenic drugs, all the time.
Then when the series is aired, the episode order is scrambled.

The manga is still going, but it really is a crime against humanity to end the Berserk anime the way they did. That ending haunts me to this day.

I'd watch that.
Dead Leaves is the only thing i saw that was nearly as crazy and enjoyable as FLCL, too bad it was waaaay to short .
^Marathon FTW, although nothing makes gratifying moments more sweet than anxiously awaiting them for months (or years, for some manga).
So I realize that comparing them to their respective series is a bad idea, but are either the Air or Clannad movies worth watching? Or are they as bad as Kanon 2002 supposedly was (haven't seen it either)?

I absolutely forgot that those existed. They might be worth watching. Both of them deviate quite a bit from the VN storyline, and their directors end up showing completely different takes on each series. Some storyline elements are cut (e.x. no arcs in Clannad and quite a few changed plotline elements), but they're overall interesting films to watch. I guess you can go watch them, but don't expect anything fantastic.
Queens Blade 2! zomg!!! It!!! SUCKS!!! I expect nothing but comedy from that show. I'll probably end up watching Railgun, a few episodes of Letter Bee, Natsu no Arashi 2, Kimi ni Todoke, Darker than Black, and Winter Sonata.
I'll also be watching Romance of the Three Kingdoms to see how badly they can screw it up.
You can't screw up Romance of the Three Kingdoms any more than how much its been put through already in every other medium, I expect this to be at that par. That horrendously low par.
Railgun, Kobato, and then there were some other things that interested me that I can't recall at the moment. Kampfer looked sort of amusing, might watch it for idle amusement.
Honestly I am too busy lamenting the horrible exchange rate and the fact that Bakemonogatari blu-ray dvd limited editions are still around to tempt me.
