I never watched anime before and didn't really understand what's there to like, because the parts i saw on tv or at friends' places were always some stupid fighting scenes and some japanese girls saying stupid shit(no offence if you enjoy that lol). but I recently decided to give Deathnote a go, just to make sure I wasn't missing out, and I actually liked it a lot. Will probably check out some more from the mystery category in the link on top.

I got a feeling that many people got wrong idea of anime in general just because they have checked out the wrong series and are generalizing the whole thing.
Unfortunately vast majority of anime is indeed aimed to kids though.
But Mystery, Supernatural, Seinen, Psychological, Thriller and maybe some other genres might provide a more mature viewing experience.

Just need to watch school days

Unfortunately there's not really a whole lot more to add, and the majority of us are too old for RK now I think :x

It's like Bleach, only in ~1880 instead of the afterlife.

Well for one it's catered towards children and young teens. It ran in Shonen Weekly after all. That's not saying it's not enjoyable for older people, but it means it has to be accessible for younger ones. This is something that definitely shows in Rurouni Kenshin.
I have a few volumes of the manga here, so yeah, I like it decent enough.

is there any info on the new natsume airing date or something similar? I'm dying here.
I finally finished watching fushigi yuugi (The mysterious play) and god it was painful. I'm not sure I've ever seen such a heavy shoujo anime ever. The nice part was that it had these weird ecchi moments despite being an anime for children. Rape was like the major theme.
Starting on Galaxy Express 999 now. Very nice, I'm getting Kaiba and Casshern vibes already. If you can stand the old animation it's definitely something to recommend... Melancholic, episodic and overall pleasant. Maybe a bit long though...
*edit* also i dont think its a good idea to merge short movies or any movies into the recommendation, at least not without displaying so in any way. Especially something such as Tsumiki no Ie, sure it was a nice little piece, but it's barely even classifiable as anime. Also, why isnt casshern on that list? REMOVE FUCKING EUREKA 7 ITS TERRIBLE, or maybe fmp (its more comedy than mecha really)

Moralfag protagonist is actually hidden strong. He beats up a bunch of scrubs. People fawn over him. But then duty calls! He is unleashed against a strong opponent! Who, instead of just coming out, sends his goons against moralfag protagonist! Moralfag protagonist (and friends) level up 5 times! They defeat vile enemy! They return home happily! Insert intermission where moralfag protagonist and his friends all power up and/or become closer to each other!* HIdden truths about moralfag protagonist pop up! These lead to! A wild "Strong Opponent" has appeared! Duty calls! Moralfag protagonist tearfully heads out to fight, supported by friends! Strong Opponent uses GOON ATTACK! Moralfag protagonist (and friends) level up! Moralfag protagonist defeats Strong Opponent!
The only difference is that RK ended at 28 volumes, Bleach keeps the cycle going.
* Random party member level-ups and intimacy-flag-hitting is done throughout the series, but are mentioned during these arc intermissions because they are the exclusive focus.

This could be said about any action anime ever pretty much. The difference is the tone and focus of the "moralfag protagonist" as you so gracefully put it.

It can be said for every single Shounen Weekly Jump series, such as Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Fairy Tale, RK, and every other one that has run in that magazine. After all, "friendship, loyalty, and hardwork!" are its themes. It's catered toward elementary school kids, although that doesn't exclude older people from enjoying (esp. in the case of One Piece, for which the actual audience was found to be majority adult), but these are not series that many of us would enjoy anymore, even if we enjoyed them a decade or so ago.

The reason why I don't read Shounen most of the time, not that shoujo is that much better....
Actually scratch that
I like shoujo a lot better
