This "Oh, this rubber fruit is actually rubber god fruit" is very bad, there is no way around it. although personally, I don't mind this kind of "changing the nature of the fruit" in a vacuum.
In the whole series there is no indication/ implication of it being a remote possibility, let alone likely event. The "hint" just dropped a few chapters before, it had almost no setup before hand. I was more shock than surprise with this revelation to be honest.
It also breaks the whole story / background, in the way that you have to ask what the world government is doing all the time.
The marine is ignorant to this super powerful fruit? Sure it can, but the world government, the five star elder, are they sleeping in all these years? Why didn't they do ANYTHING to recover this fruit? how hard is it to kill luffy at marindfort? Is it impossible to capture luffy with any admiral during pre-time skip? That just make zero sense, and you have to pull the "all antagonist are idiots who will just stand there to let the protagonist punch him in the face" card in order to justify it. I expected better story than that.
I believe Oda want to pull the "oh no!! kaido defeated Luffy (again)" and then pull an "Oh, luffy is back and more powerful, yeah!!" kind of "plot twist", but so far, I don't like it, I don't think the "rubber fruit is actually a god fruit" is good in any way shape or form. It just suddenly get luffy "non-rubber" ability. I suspect Oda get stuck in the next arc so luffy need some "extra" ability to "navigate" the next arc?
I think the whole story is going from a bunch of misfit / cast aside having a journey of a lifetime to a bunch of (self exiled) noble attempting a coup with weapon of mass destruction, I am not sure how I feel about it.

this is like the haki retcon; one piece wasn’t intended to go on for so long, so oda has to start retrofitting the story with these mechanics.
mantra = actually observational haki! gold roger actually never knew the ancient language, it was a samurai he picked up!
i will say though that the gomu gomu has been one of the more unusual fruits. it’s been noted occasionally pre-time skip that it functions oddly for a paramecia (has some overlap with logia). also the gears, especially gear 2, definitely stretched the boundaries of what a rubber fruit should be able to do. i think if there had been more remarks about that aspect earlier in the series it would have been great foreshadowing.
maybe there’s going to be some callback to how rubber is non-existent in skypeia and how it could oppose the most powerful fruit?

Did you guys see Oda is writing that new One piece jrpg? I'd love to see an open world one piece game, although with the way navigation in the grand line works you'd have to kinda throw that out.

In enies lobby it was foreshadowed that when you eat a devil fruit a little devil lives inside of you. The devils were pictured as having tails. I bet luffy has a tailed devil inside of him that he can sync his haki chakra with to enter his tailed devil state which is gear 5. Would be a very unique manga from Goda
Also luffy grew up on a forested mountain hidden away with ace. You could say his village was hidden by some leaves

Seems legit. All we need now are parasitical moon aliens who are source of the power of the devil fruit. Another space alien is the source of all haki. If you eat the spinal fluid of the devil fruit user, you gain their powers. That is the great secret of Blackbeard who is fated to consume all the devil fruits. Gear 7 Luffy will gain horns and become a demon kami shinigami supersaiyan. After the final battle the world will be at peace and the devil fruits are no more.

I actually like this new powerup, although it does make Kaido look like the underdog in this fight. I only wish that Oda didn't bother with the whole chosen one nonsense and just left it at awakening. But nothing's perfect I guess.
I feel like a bit of pre-timeskip One Piece has come back with the goofiness! Hopefully it continues.

Eh, I’m really not into this fight any more, ignoring my world building issues with this the fight itself doesn’t have that desperate edge so much any more and Toon World is a little too toony in some circumstances.

I've said it before, but the art style undermines any sense of urgency, intensity and ultimately importance in what's supposed to be a climactic fight for the fate of a whole country (and more). And while One Piece has always had goofy elements in its fights, this drastically runs against what's been a key theme from the very start - all fun and games, but dead serious when it really matters. Luffy idolizes Shanks, and the way Shanks was introduced was exactly like that. He laughs off petty insults, but he's furious and ready to kill the second someone harms people he cares about. Luffy even imitates that exact scene in his first meeting with Bellamy. With this now being Luffy's ultimate power, goofyness will be how every important fight ends. To me that undermines a very important theme set throughout the whole series, and even in this very fight. Luffy repeatedly gets angry at Kaido for drinking and fooling around.
And on a "technical" level, why do the eyes of people just standing by get googly too?

I mean we did have goofy moments on almost every luffy boss fight those fights have weight and alot at stake always.
Not that i don't want the fight to end. I think it has gone too long

I don’t mind the goofyness in general but I don’t really like the aesthetic of gear 5. Luffy’s face and hair just look fucking weird
The premise of the power of imagination is kind of too much though

This is definitely feeling like an "uhhhh... ehhhh" downswing for OP at the crescendo of a long ass arc with some cool climactic stuff happening.
Mega disappointed as of right now.
