One piece at peak (which was in romance dawn ~ marineford) was serious when it mattered and goofy when it didn't. Goffy as in strawhats shooting the shit together and partying. Luffy acting all dumb before going into arc. When shit was on line and it needed to be done i liked how the crew was serious. Post Time skip i feel like oda really wanted luffy to be like joy boy embodiment and ruined the fun of it all. (hence why one piece is declining in sales) | ||

The magic of One Piece was always that it managed to tread the line between being goofy and serious, because Oda picked his moments excellently. Now he's trying to conflate them and it doesn't work for me at all. Personally, I really hope this is just the fruit's personality acting out (they do supposedly have personality after all) and Luffy still has to figure out how to keep it in check. But even then, we're going to get a ton of stupid shit at the climax of every important fight because that's just the ability now. | ||

We know nothing about Joy Boy. Luffy has almost *always* been some embodiment of some nebulous concept (Will of D has been a thing for a long ass time). One Piece as been full of goofy and silly stuff since the very first chapter. The vast majority of the major battles in the manga contain goofiness and silliness. Are you suggesting that pre-time skip, when "shit was on the line", it was always completely serious? I guess Luffy using Gear 3rd vs Lucci and turning into a little chibi guy was serious. Or when hes fighting Enel, his immunity to electricity prompting one of the most ridiculous faces the series had seen at that point ouf of Enel? Or Luffy fighting Crocodile, swallowing a bunch of water to become "Mizu-Luffy", and then started leaking was serious. I guess Luffy fighting Arlong, and using Arlong's own teeth to bite him was serious. And I could go on. And this isn't even bringing up examples involving people like Usopp and Nami, who also have fights fully of silly shit. One Piece has always had its humor, even in the "serious" parts. And lets not ignore what we are actually talking about here. People are mad at the goofiness of this fight, and cite stuff like the emotional parts of Enies Lobby or Marineford, and act like things are different now. And thats complete horseshit. This arc has had tons of serious moments. But this past chapter where everyone is complaining about it being silly? This chapter was 100% a fight chapter, and all fights in One Piece involving Luffy have him doing silly, wild shit. And thats what this chapter was. | ||

I like the use of making Kaido rubber, that feels like natural comedic comedy, making his body rubber and grabbing his rubber eyeballs to escape his stomach and inflating himself to fuck with Kaido after he got eaten, I like those. I still really dont like the Toon World shit. Imagination Crazy Fighting feels so much more Bleach or another abstract-fighting-power sort of manga. One Piece is at its best when it's using more concrete powers in creative and interesting ways, at least when it comes to characters we see a lot of. Like, if youre going to do funny-combat, this chapter shows how to do it, and its not by making use of the stupid fuckin Nika Nika magic, its by making use of the Gum Gum's qualities, the properties of rubber. Dunno, I really dont like the idea that now we're going to get Luffy imaginating his hard fights away as opposed to creatively abusing the properties of rubber, or bounciness, or flexibility, or some property of the power hes had and we've been seeing him explore for two decades. | ||
