Most of them likely won't be big characters in the story, but this is an important arc so why speed through it? Introducing characters adds to the depth of the arc, even if they play no major roles in the outcome of it. For example, I'm quite happy exploring Kaido's crew more in depth. It's a Yonkou's crew, you should get a feel for how large and powerful it is. Was the same with Big Mom and her 10000 children. Same goes for the other side - these are characters worth at least mentioning in passing. You're supposed to get a feel for the scale of this conflict. If everyone were just some blank face then you wouldn't.

This arc hasn't felt bloated to me despite its length.

Oda is just taking his time introducing the characters now so he doesn't have to spend too much time on that once the war kicks off. Also the Flying 6 are some of the strongest members of Kaido's crew so it makes even more sense Oda is building up something there.

Yeah, Oda same face doesn't help. We've been introduced to so many new characters in Wano, that it's hard to care/keep track. There's the old yakuza bosses, the Orochi Shinobi, the fat demon looking things in Kaidos crew, and now the flying 6? Who are all these people? Is Oda just adding characters to make the fight more "epic"? Most of them won't even get screentime, IMO.

probably in for another dressrossa where theres just so many fights at once you cant keep them straight

Aokiji was looking at Monkey D. Garp's past since Aokiji was a new recruit.

Yeah, it doesn't really make much sense. I guess they get a massive salary bump or equivalent. Another weird thing is that it is an official position that only three members are allowed to have apparently. You see that in One Piece an awful lot. Like the shikibukai. Why must there be 7? Why flying six? Why can't it be flying nine? What happens if there were 4 equally skilled guys that could had been all stars? They would had fought each other continuously for the postion.

Its a hierarchy, its just natural for people wanting to climb to the top. I don't get why such a thing existing in Kaido's crew doesn't make sense, given such things are literally everywhere in society.

I imagine they want to head the crew eventually after kaido dies or whatever seeing as they’re all former captains and their best bet is to make it as far up the chain of command before then. Plus it’s prestige and a show of strength
