This. Mayuri doesn't have a predecessor. Urahaha created the unit you are correct. That's not saying that there wasn't some kind of scientific person personality among everyone sometime in the past though.

Urahara does not have a predecessor in that there was no Research Institute. There was a squad 12, and it is possible it has always been the scientific squad but Urahara was the first to really organise it.

the person in the last panel calling and saying 'hey glad to see you guys are all there' is obviously urahara sandal guy judging by his tone and them stating it's a call from hueco mundo. So no Kubo didn't forget about urahara, and will likely explain what happened with the sword pointing chapters ago, so can people stop claiming 'shit that kubo will never explain!'

Also, you forget that Mayuri was released from prison by Urahara. We don't know anything about his past, but somehow he had to got there. This new spider-chick is probably connected to this somehow (maybe she put him into that jail or something?).

or perhaps she was sent to check out what Urahara was doing at some point
or maybe she was there as an interim leader after Kisuke ran away to make sure there was nothing obscene and blaspemous there and then handed it over to Mayuri
she commented on the locks being weaker so at some point she was breaking the locks amde by Urahara so she must have been snooping around before Mayuri changed all the locks

It there was, it's definitely her. But she's obviously not the old 12th division captain since that's the fat chick.
As for the "laboratory" thing, maybe she's talking about the hidden prison? I think it works well with the phrasing she uses "the lock was much easier than it was at the time that i was there" meaning she used to be in the prison like Mayuri.
Or Mayuri was stored in the prison because he did wrong stuff in a laboratory which used to belong to that girl and that's why Urahara knew he could be an asset to his R&D facility.

if he was the 0 division would have gotten involed against Aizen, they ddnt get involved because Aizen wasnt directly doing anything against the soul king if Urahara or Issen was the soul king (or related to him) then tehyd have got involved
