Will Poulter for Black Widow

honestly to cast anyone else as Ironman or Deadpool is straight heresy and i won’t hear it.
|
Relatedly, I can't really see attempts at casting anyone other than Hugh Jackman as Wolverine working out.
|
It would take a pretty talented actor to get out from under that performance and bring something new to Logan. But the look of Wolverine isn’t that challenging to pull off. It is all about the sideburns, stubble and looking great in white undershirt.

Seen Passengers it was a fairly decent scifi. A bit sentimental but didn't expect to enjoy it but i did.

The Edge of Seventeen A coming of age story about a 17 year old highschool girl (nadine) who for most of her life was an outsider and only really has one friend. One day her best friend hooks up with her way more popular brother Darian and Nadine cannot really deal with it. This movie definitely uses a lot of the clichés you would expect, Nadine is the loner who thinks she is way more mature than everyone else while in reality struggling with growing up and socialising. Her single mother has a hard time to raise the children and needs help from her eldest Darian. There are the common highschool tropes as well. But it still works when added together because there are little twists to it, expanding a bit above the stereotype and thus providing some nuance among all the tropes. Another big reason has to be our main lead who plays the role wonderfully. The other actors do a good job as well, especially Woody Harrelson who has great chemistry with Steinfeld when they banter along as teacher and student. This is no masterpiece in any way, but it's a good story about growing up and everything which comes with it.

True Grit (2010 version) This is a story about Mattie Ross a 14 year old girl who seeks revenge for her murdered father. She hires an US marshal named Rooster Cogburn who is the typical wild west man, drinking a lot ad shooting well. They get accompanied by texas ranger LaBoeuf and try to find the murderer together. The technical aspects of this movie are excellent as you would expect from a coen brothers' movie, it looks excellent and captures the nature of the era very well. The actors do an excellent job (especially hailee steinfeld as a 14 year old surprised me, way better than the performance in the original) and the atmosphere created is captivating. I have a big problem with the script though, a lot of really convenient circumstances arise and all of these added together made it hard for me to care about the actual plot. Which is sad because everything around it was very well done. It's still a good movie all things considered, but i am disappointed because it could have been more. 7/10
The Garden of Words This is a movie from Makoto Shinkai the man behind the extremely successful "your name". People recommended to check out his past work and i finally did. It's about a japanese high school student Takao Akizuki who wants to become a shoemaker and an at first mysterious mid twenty woman Yukari Yukino. On rainy days they both meet each other in the national garden, just sitting there reading a book or drawing some shoes while chatting a little. Obviously there is more to it than that but i don't wanna spoil much, it's only a 45 minute short film anyway. It's definitely one of the most beautiful anime movies i have ever seen, which was to be expected from the director of "your name" but this one might be even a bit more impressive. It will also hit you in the feels, it's simply shinkai's style and he already knew how to do it back then. Sadly i felt that the story is really thin though, almost too thin already for the current runtime. It's also a bit overly melodramatic which lessens the emotional impact a tiny bit. I would still recommend it though, don't expect a masterclass work like "your name" though, it's merely good. 7/10 While all these three movies are 7/10 material, i listed them in order from best to worst in my opinion, just to have an idea (if you can even compare these movies in the first place)

The Artist Man was i disappointed with this movie, it could have been so great if only it didn't have these pacing issues due to a very thin story. It's about George Valentin a silent movie star who doesn't wanna realize that the new talking pictues are the future of filmmaking. The theme of the new replacing the old is well done, especially because you also follow one of the new stars a bit, but his struggle with this new reality is repeated ad nauseam and this drags quite a bit because at that point in the movie there really isn't anything outstanding happening on any front, no new information nothing. Why was i disappointed? Because i think this had the potential to be a masterpiece, the technical aspects are outstanding, be it the acting (Jean Dujardin does a very charming job), the cinematography and set design (very nice camera movement and angles to reflect his inner thoughts) and even some neat surprises in a dream sequence which are quite "meta". The music is also excellent and integral for this movie to work, it's a silent film after all. I liked the movie, what it did well it did really well but that feeling is exactly why i was so disappointed with it afterwards. Cut a few things here and there and you have a truly great film, now it's overall "only" good. 7/10
edit2:
This is just a really well made romcom. I typically hate that genre, it's only dumb jokes and unrelatable, superficial characters. Not in this one though! I still didn't outright laugh a lot, but that's just me and my taste in humor. It had a lot of good jokes though, it was amusing. The real strength is the plot and its characters, it just feels real and you care for what happens. It's about a pakistani living in america who falls in love with a white woman. Why do i specifiy the race? Because it's part of the problem, our main character Kumail is supposed to marry a pakistani muslim woman, otherwise his family might just expel him. I know this little synopsis doesn't sound terribly original, but it is handled really well and the writing is the big strength here.

I just watched Witch-Hunt and oh boy, I didn't realize the party game horror genre had kicked off in 2017. I think the makers of One Night Ultimate Werewolf might be able to sue the producers of that movie if it weren't already just a unique combo of other party game traits. They even use the same app gimmick...but it's a cassette for some reason.
It starts terrible and then takes a turn into bad-good towards the end. Almost, but not quite, worth watching for the hammy monologue at the end.

Den of Thieves - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1259528/ Absolute fairy tale of a cops and robbers movie. The beginning was promising, telling me life as a security guard in LA must suck a lot. Then it introduces Gerard Butler as the supposed protagonist, but then all he does is endanger the people he is supposed to protect on pretty much every scene. As a result I've skipped all the sappy build up parts as I just don't empathize at all with this cowboy. As for the bad guys, the characters felt incompletely fleshed out. The gun battles were well done and I didn't anticipate the ending, but in the end I just didn't care enough who survived. If you want to see a better movie, go look Hell or High Water - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2582782/.

I just came back from Deadpool2. Had so many expectations since I was a HUGE fan of the first film. I d give DP2 a 6.5 (DP1 was a 10 for me).
+ Show Spoiler +the script sucked big time. Had some really good jokes but also some really bad ones. The kid was really bad at acting and I feel the whole thing with the "they are pedophiles lets kill them" thing was a bit too much.

Eat Drink Man Woman (1994)
I randomly stumbled across it's opening scene on youtube and it immediately caught my attention: Lavish home-cooked Chinese cuisine prepared and served by a father to his three daughters. But you could already feel the internal strife within the family amidst the feast and get a sense of whats to come for the rest of the movie.
Romance-wise Id give it a solid 8.5/10.
Comedy 7/10.
Overall I'd highly recommend this movie if this scene intrigued you as much as it did to me.+ Show Spoiler [youtube vid] +

Fahrenheit 451
I have no idea why this movie has such low scores. I think it was a pretty good adaptation of the book and the film was very entertaining. They sure did change the plot a bit but I was fine with it since they had to somehow update it to match more modern times and weave in the related problems we brought into the picture since the book was published.
Definitely recommended.

it has low scores because its awful. farcical overwrought scenes reminiscent of the worst of youtube, unbelievable premises given the friction free transmission of information, ridiculous additions not found in the book, takes itself too seriously, and somewhat misses the point
|
Star Wars The Last Jedi - slightly better than Force Awakens. A lot of forced comedy that are not really funny, just like TFA. Some situations stretch the believability thin. Like how does the First Order get that strong being led by such blundering idiots, or how the rebels just brush off the losses from an impulsive leader who still acts like a comedian. The story needs a strong dose of serious.

I went to see han solo with my cousin we both left the cinema after 1 hour...

Man, you did a good job of deflating my expectations.

So I see that reviews for Han Solo are overwhelmingly mediocre. Are people mostly upset over pedantic things, or is it legit not a very good movie?

I highly recommend any of the Detective K movies. They are hilarious and brilliantly made. Also, if you need more Korean movies A Better Tomorrow, The Merciless, and The Good, The Bad, and The Weird(?) are good to watch.

There's a droid called L337. Make of that what you will.

The seventies were more romantic, dreamy, full of opportunity. A name like Skywalker fits in that context. L337 fits in the context of the 2010's being drowned with meme culture. I personally prefer the former, until it gets too cheesy, then I loathe both equally.
