I have some bad news for you...

I'll believe that the fan fiction author was serious but there is zero chance that the people making those movies weren't doing it on purpose. There were countless places where they could have tried to make a real movie or at the very least toned it down but instead presented it exactly as it was written with the driest delivery they could think of and left it to the audience to work out what they thought about the piece of shit they were producing.

Near the end of one of them a helicopter with the main character crashes into a volcano in the middle of the wilderness. Next scene he just walks in through the door and tells everyone he's fine and the entire movie moves along without anyone bringing up the whole volcano thing again and with it having zero impact on the plot. That shit is intentional, that's the director sharing a joke about the source material with the audience. It could have been cut, it could have been made into part of the story, they could at least have had some intervening time where the guy has to hike to civilization or they search for him or whatever. But nope, just volcano into "hi guys, I'm back from the volcano" and everyone moves forwards like he had gone to the store to get a pack of smokes.

It seems to me that the argument "they were doing it on purpose," or that it's a parody, renders it very unlike The Room, which was deadly serious. Although I must admit that arguments about how irredeemable trash actually has merit (funny! parody! fabulous!) always leave me kind of cold. I usually picture some disheveled guy shouting and gesticulating with a zealous look in his eye, apparently unaware of how everyone is staring at him and no one is laughing.
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

Man, you did a good job of deflating my expectations.

Watch it anyway Going in with low expectations will shield you from disappointment and gives a higher chance to be pleasantly surprised.

Star Wars The Last Jedi - slightly better than Force Awakens. A lot of forced comedy that are not really funny, just like TFA. Some situations stretch the believability thin. Like how does the First Order get that strong being led by such blundering idiots, or how the rebels just brush off the losses from an impulsive leader who still acts like a comedian. The story needs a strong dose of serious.

How is it any better than FA?

I mean, just typing "the last jedi" in YouTube mostly gives you titles like:
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi - What Went Wrong?
  • Why The Last Jedi is a Complete Cinematic Failure
  • Top 10 Reasons Why The Last Jedi Made Me ANGRY!
  • The Last Jedi And The Fall Of Star Wars: Part 1 - The Idiocy Awakens
  • The Last Jedi: The Worst Star Wars Movie Ever Made
  • The Last Jedi Blu Ray Reveals How They Killed Star Wars

If you do the same with "force awakens" there's only one really negative title and most are neutral/positive.

Wait so the quality of a movie is decided by typing the title into youtube and looking at how many of these hate videos you can find? Interesting methodology for sure

It's by no means perfect, but it can give you a good idea on what the general opinion about the movie is.

Pleasantville is one of my favourite movies that no one I know has seen.

I've seen it and I'm quite fond of it, but it isn't what I would call a typical comedy, if one can call it that.

It's definitely more of a dry/dark comedy or a social critique. It honestly is a lot stronger on the social themes than any sort of comedy!

I can agree to that, friend.

Land of Mine - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3841424/

Danish film about post-WW2 mine clearing by German soldiers. This Oscar-nominated film is grim, tense, and very well-acted. I watched this on and off as sometimes the tension is just too much. The film is beautifully shot as well, very clear and focused. Very good film. It brings to light a lesser-known fact of the war.

Tomb Raider

Was OK but a bit annoying in that the big plot twist was obvious almost from the beginning of the movie and the fact that they tried to do Indiana Jones but with more action and most ridiculous puzzles ever... Good movie to just watch and forget if you can turn your brain off.

Positives:

It has a winning setup in the modern zeitgeist. Underdog against greedy corporate scum works every time when it's executed this competently. I found myself pulling for the main character, despite spots of annoyance, simply due to the forces arrayed against him. The main cast pull off all their roles admirably, touching upon caricature without delving fully into it. Some of the jokes remain consistently funny (Edgerton is great in all the myriad ways he conveyed his character's mixture of buffoonish bluster and oblivious stupidity) while others lose their luster as soon as the novelty wears off (the crime lord's penchant for The Beatles). Highlighting the contrast between the tepidness of the office and the boisterous, unpredictable climate of Mexico makes for some of the best spots of humor.

The cinematography choices are spot-on if not eye-popping, especially the color grading of Promethium Pharmaceuticals' offices. The soundtrack wasn't memorable but it typically operates as background in comedies.

Negatives

Oyelowo is almost recalcitrant in portraying the protagonist as anything but virtuous. His naivety is largely played for moments of sympathy, and his attempts to do bad things result in laughs instead of character growth. substitute for him learning It's weird that a criticism made of the protagonist halfway through the movie, one we're supposed to take as mean-spirited due to the speaker, is inadvertently proven true by the structure of the movie. He is simply a doll thrown around by circumstance who never makes decisions of import.

There's also this weird reluctance to make Theron's character as despicable as Edgerton's. In particular there's a short scene before a minor revelation (which was easy to anticipate), which alludes to her abrasive personality as a product of childhood pressure from her father. Edgerton doesn't get the same benefit; neither do the other malcontents that unintentionally conspire to ruin the main character's life. His wife in particular is "punished" with a very rude comeuppance at the closing of the film which makes zero sense if you pay attention to their dynamic.

The plotline with Amanda Seyfried was superfluous. Her naive, sunny demeanor - telegraphed by her name - nicely complements Oyelowo's yearning for some sense of justice and goodness in his world, but her plotline with the boyfriend has no satisfying resolution. I'm not sure why it was even included; from a functional standpoint, she could have been introduced in a different manner without affecting the main plot in any detrimental manner.

Finally, the moral dimensions don't work if you think about them for more than two minutes. The movie treats the bad guys as unequivocally bad, hypocritical and pathetic, yet when Oyelowo's character indulges in the same behavior as soon as he gains leverage it is forgiven due to his "underdog" status. The movie lacks the courage to do a complete black satire of corporate life and it blunts the impact of the second act as a result.

Verdict: B-

The Chaser - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1190539/
I finally got to see this Korean serial killer crime thriller after hearing about it years ago. I haven't watched many Korean movies, the last memorable one being Oldboy. But I remember now that violence in Korean films is on another level. One scene in this movie is as uncomfortable to watch as it is sadistic. The movie is very watchable though, as it does not follow the formula of most Hollywood serial killers.

Glad you enjoyed it. I can also recommend The Counterfeiters - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0813547/ - film about the German WW2 plan to produce counterfeit money under the perspective of the Jewish prisoners tasked to lead this operation. Very well-acted and based on a true story.

I've just seen the last one of Terry Gilliam, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote and I loved it. We were 7 people in the cinema including me and my girlfriend :'-)

Acting is awesome, good photography and some scenes are hilarious. It's been a long time since I've laughed that much in a cinema. It's not a popcorn movie though, you have to get into it to really appreciate it (imho).

Can only recommend it.

The Fountainhead

Zack Snyder says his next film project is "The Fountainhead". It's a 700 page novel. The only way it can work is as a trilogy with each movie being at least 2 hours long.

https://www.polygon.com/2018/5/28/17403266/zack-snyder-the-fountainhead-adaptation-ayn-rand
in the article it says: "a rape occurs during the first encounter between Rand’s main protagonist"
this is false. Rand has explained many times what happens in that scene. i guess everyone needs clicks.

Put Ronda Rousey on a near death starvation diet and she can be Dominique Francon (sp?).
Had this been remade in 1980 it woulda been cool to see Donnie Most as Howard Roak.

i watched the 1949 version of The Fountainhead starring Gary Cooper. Gary saved it.
7/10.

The only reason I can see anyone trying to make a movie based on that awful book is to see if they can make an even worse movie. I believe in you, Mr. Snyder.

the 1949 movie version of the Fountainhead was decent...certainly better than awful.
Miss Rand is probably the #1 Novelist//fiction writer of the 20th century.
How many other 1940s novels get discussed on a video game/esports web site?

In the book thread, plenty. Being discussed is an extremely low bar anyway; a mod on this site has even written an excellent blog about how Rand's writing is objectively low quality and serves as little more than a clumsy, boring vehicle for political belief masquerading as art, an assessment that would likely carry even more force were Mr. Snyder's plans to take form.

On the other hand, this can be a great transition into how Snyder's objectivity ruined Man of Steel. Where Pa Kent is turned into a Papa Rand, telling Clark it is to unique and talented to be risk saving a school bus full of kids and being exposed. That Clark is so unique and awesome his father lets himself die so Clark won't risk teh little, non-unique people fearing his greatness, which is what the common people fear. Greatness and natural talent.

Snyder is going to make an amazing film in the Fountain head, which I will watch drunk with a bunch of friend just like I did with the Room.
