They decided to change the third season to add in an Assassin's Creed style twist.
thank goodness, if there's one thing the GoT universe is missing it's ancient aliens.

But I'm having trouble motivating myself to read it when I already know everything. So my question is.. Is it absolutely necessary to read the second book if I've seen the show? Or can I skip to the third book and not be lost/miss a ton of stuff?
Sorry for bringing up the books here but it's not really discussing what happens in them so I think I should be okay? Just don't want to spoil anything accidentally by going to the book thread.
TLDR: Have the books, have trouble reading things when I already know everything. Is it necessary to read the second book or can I skip to the third after I finish the first?
There are a few simplifications of events that the TV series did in the second season. The book I think is necessary if you want to read the 3rd one. The second book is also really good! So read it

Nope, we got that, they're called the Others (white walkers).
I like the longer episode idea. Even if it's just by a few minutes, it still means more content and more awesomeness. Also the "reversals of fortune" means it's time to start writing down who I think is going to die this season.

I just finished the third book without reading the first two (watched the serie instead). I think I didn't miss anything.
You can go directly to the third, you won't regret it. What is good in game of throne is the twist in the story which makes you go "WTFWTFWTF OMG". If you know what will happen next, it's not very exciting.

That's not true at all. The writing and details are good enough to read them all.
This probably belongs in the other thread, yet none of you would want spoilers for books 3+ so it kinda belongs here...man we need that third thread or a relaxation of the wording on this one's book rules for content already passed in the show. I'll run with it anyway.
No, you can't skip book 2. They made way too many changes. While by most standards it was still a pretty loyal translation it isn't close enough to the same and it has a serious impact on a couple characters. I'll give the notion this: Everything ends (at the close of book 2/season 2) in about the same 'positions' so I can see how someone who maybe isn't paying so much attention to details might think that they were fine just picking up at book 3 after watching the first 2 seasons.
Season 1 is where they were close enough to the books that I could see skipping for someone who really doesn't like reading something with a story they already know.
I'm starting to think the GoT producers scrapped the entire budget for teasers in order to pump as much money as possible into the actual episodes for this season. That's fine by me.

Agreed, I don't think there's any debate around how amazing this show is, so who really cares if they're spending less money on stupid hype teasers when everyone already know the show will be amazing. More money for awesome episodes is great.

If it's between skipping book 2 and reading the last 3 or just not reading them at all, of course you can skip book 2. You won't be confused at all going into book 3 as long as you remember the show and do a very quick read on what was different. Sure it's not ideal and you will miss the extra stuff the book has to offer, but it's more ideal than never reading them at all. One of my friends tried to read book 2 after seeing the show and he wasn't that enthused. I can't blame him, it's probably hard to reread something that has been turned into a show and you just want to know what happens next. I told him just to go to book 3 and he ended reading the last 3 books over the span of a week...
Any ETA on the first trailer? The hype is killing me and I am surprised there hasn't been a real trailer yet when it's almost close to being a month away
