yea definitely not the vision of Stannis I had while reading, Renly too for that matter
From the books Stannis is meant to be "stone" whilst Renly is a spitting image of his brother. So expectation wise I think they are decent, but not as accurate as some depictions (all the lannisters for example).
Stannis and Renly both I expected to have some more muscle / build to them. Renly especially I feel is almost too small, but it almost matches his showmanship better. Stannis, from the trailers at least, has the hard face I expected but again I imagine Stannis to be larger whilst he appears quite thin. Of course Stannis impressions are heavily from trailers so far, so I can't rule out that he might just fit better than I imagined.
Still, as a whole I think I just expected the Baratheons to be more...robust? Some adjective along those lines. (EDIT: Or "MASSIVE" as it was put a couple of posts ago hahaha)
Don't know where you guys got that stannis was big and muscly. He seemed much more like a tight-skinned skinny aging/middle-age man to me. Considering his eating habits I would say this should be the typical impression.
Well, Ned does describe Robert and his brothers as big men, but dwarfed by the Mountain.
Stannis is probably tall, lean but well-built. Ageing too.
The only disappointing thing to me is that I keep having to stop myself from reading the books, to get the full effect out of the TV series, but at this rate, it's going to take several more years to adapt all of them.

Its definitely worth reading the books if its something you want to do. The show, assuming they stick with 1 season a year will take at least 5 more years to complete (that is if Martin really makes his 7 book deadline, which even he is unsure about), not to mention the talk of splitting up ASoS into 2 seasons.
At the very least you should read the first book (since I assume you've watched the first season) and see if you like the writing style.
varys was a chillingly well portrayed in the show... he actually feels slithery, very nicely done.
as for the writing style, i find it extremely easy to read. I find it pretty funny, reads like a script of "Spartacus" sometimes xD
the one thing that sometimes irks me as a whole in asofai is some characters i just find more boring than others, so when i'm reading about catelyn its boring for me, but tyrion's portions are really exciting personally

I agree, but both of them lose if compared to how they adapted Shae... Sometimes I got the impression that she was as old as Tyrion's mother, if not only according to her experience and attitude! However until I will get to see them in action I'll trust the casting staff: until now all the actors have been great and I'm pretty sure that if they decided to take this Stannis there's a reason. We only get to wait a month... UNLIKE THE FUCKING BOOKS. D:
The show's version of Shae seems a lot more interesting then the one in the books. I wonder if when he invented the character, George didn't really predict the role she would have so he originally made her very boring. I reckon TV Shae was the character he would have preferred instead of book Shae.
Why did GRRM need Shae in the books indeed. Typical bland whore character. Maybe as a look into Tyrion's character, but when you're inside Tyrion's head.. Maybe just for the sex then.

Personally I'm more into the book one because I feel that the story already has a lot of cool "brain characters" and another one it's not necessary. Also I like the idea of a Tyrion who is willing to fool himself because he WANTS to be in love despite the fact that he knows that she is a whore, instead of a Tyrion who is actually fascinated by her. Dunno, it feels more suited... Or maybe it's because (you don't want a spoiler from ASoS) + Show Spoiler +
It would be quite ridiculous for a Shae like the TV one to die out of stupidity like the book one. I mean, c'mon. But I have the feeling that the HBO guys will rewrite her role a bit and make her a noble ruined by the Lannisters or something like that, or at least I hope so.
Fucking epic. I can't wait. These are my wife's favorite books and I really like the tv show.
You should follow the good example of your wife and get your hands on the books as well, they are just sooo good. And the new trailer is just pure win.
