I had forgotten how good it was.
I wish I hadn't seen this thread though because knowing now 2nd season until next april...holy crap that sucks.
I'm sure it will be worth the wait though.

I just finished the Clash of Kings and it was surprisingly even better than the Game of Thrones. And though I realllly liked the adaptation of Game of Thrones you just can't boil down a 50 hour story into a 10 hour tv show without sacrificing a lot of important details(I think the audio book for a Storm of Swords is like 70 hours long lol). Valiant effort but too much detail and subtlety is lost. The worst thing about watching a tv show or movie of course after reading a book is that your mental picture of the characters are replaced by the cast of the tv show, though I can't picture anyone else other than Sean Bean as Ed Stark. When I started watching the show I started paying more attention to the locations and started to look at different maps along with each episode. This map should help make more sense of the geography of Westeros. + Show Spoiler + ![]()

Holy crap did they ever do an amazing job with this show. The color and depth of every scene is just so well done. Even if I knew someone had read the books, I would recommend watching the show because it is an art of itself.

It's kind of nonsense to criticize the tv-show for not being able to transport the same amount of depth as the books. Same as it would be nonsense to criticize the books for not being as graphical like the tv-show. They're doing a really good job at capturing the atmosphere and staying true to the books. The stuff they're adding, that's not actually in the books, helps the show as well, for example Littlefinger scenes. The casting is so good. The actors playing Tywin, Arya, The Hound, Tyrion and Jaime are just outstanding. The rest is strong as well. I'd name this show along with The Wire, because these two tv-shows make every other drama series look really bad in comparison.

I actually kinda feel there's several chinks in the author's story-telling that the show is able to minimize, improving it. I don't really need to know about how the grease from plump pork rolls down the king's double chin, man. Also lends to glossing over the nudity. In the show it's there, but we don't need to focus on it instead of the story. These things become facts instead of features.

I recommend them to everyone who is still hesitating whether to pick them or not, you just can't get enough of them! Halfway through Blood and Gold atm, Martin's seriously genius writer.

No clue how they plan to pull off Battle of the Blackwater, which is the decisive battle in Clash of the Kings. (not really a spoiler since I'm merely giving the name of the battle) The viewers will want another Battle of Pelennor Fields, but it is unrealistic. Having viewed both the book and the TV series, I can conclude it was an extremely faithful adaptation. Nonetheless, many of the finer details were cut off due to understandable difficulty in budget and time. The two most notables are the finer background stories concerning : The War of the Usurper (which spawned the fan favorite theory Jon Snow = Rhaegar Targaryen X Lyana Stark) and the battle of Whispering Woods (I was in disbelief that Robb sacrificed 2000 good men in the TV version. In the book, Robb gave the command of his 16,000 foot soldiers to Roose Bolton who led a diversion attack on Tywin's army. Meanwhile, Robb commanded 4000 horses and lured Jaime's cavalry into a rather clever trap, taking advantage of Jaime's lack of caution. Despite that, Jaime came dangerously close to personally killing Robb Stark, a testament of the Kingslayer's reputation. Once Jaime was fallen, the remainder of Jaime's over 15,000 foots were leaderless. Robb regrouped with the River Lords and took Jaime's siege camps unaware during the night. The conclusion was that Jaime's entire Lannister army effectively ceased to exist, the River Lords joined force with Robb Stark's army, while Roose Bolton's foots retreated. )

I really recommend you to edit your post. Imho their are quite some infos in there not everyone in this thread wants to know. If you mention a battle everyone will know that there actually WILL be a battle and you even told them where. And I wouldn't mention any RLJ theories either. And Bolton didn't retreat to Harrenhal - that would have been quite impossible.
