When i was like 12 i fell on a downward sloped hill absolutely destroying my knees, like tore them up 100% in surface area and deeply too. I was pretty tough so i went down to the stream about 50 yards away and washed them off and then thats it. I never used anything else and let them air dry. [I had big yellow/brown scabs on them for a long time]
How come i didnt get infection? I know very little about biology.. I mean i had massive amounts of dirt and sand in my wounds and surely the water wasnt super clean either...
Are certain people immune to most infections? How does it work?

Are certain people immune to most infections? How does it work? It's highly circumstantial, although there are some factors. Surely it depends on where you landed and how strong your immunity system works - for instance people that would never walk out of their home and do this would have a much higher chance of getting infection since their immunity system isn't trained. That's why I say it's okay to behave uncleanly every once in a while. What I'm suggesting is that you were a relatively (not unreasonably) dirty kid! In fact I guess this could be an explanation for why Drogo got an infection ~ since he never lost a duel, he wasn't hurt at all and then when it happens, his immunity system wouldn't keep up. He talks about the stab like he's used to it tho.

Seeing as I have read the books I was really looking forward to see the realization dawn upon my wife's face as Ed's head hits the ground. I remember that moment from the books is when I realized this will be the most epic story ever, no one is safe! I couldn't wait to see her reaction.
She cried for 10mins and didn't want to watch the show any more. I think it wasn't so much the fact that he died so much as he died completely dishonored and a traitor.
I showed her the article zatic linked and she eventually came around. She says, however, that if Arya dies, she'll stop watching for sure.
God, I love this show!

He talks about the stab like he's used to it tho. I don't know about that. Even if you win a duel, you're likely to get hit at least once. and then, you don't get that good without practice. Noone is just so naturally good that they never ever EVER lose. On his way to the top, there were many falls.
You know what? Even if he somehow was some miracle super dueler, I don't think its possible to be THAT clean in those times. I think this is a problem thats new to humanity because of our cleanliness and vaccines and all that shit. but this is so off topic...
@ Cuddle: Was expecting some epic facial expression with a dropped jaw or something. Instead I get 'she cried for ten minutes...' I lol'd xD
I agree with her, though. I really hope Arya doesn't die. She, Jon, and Dany are my three favorite characters. Actually, I don't like Dany all that much, but I really like her story. She herself is sorta meh.

zelniq, i think you should get rid of the gif front page... i think its NSFW...
anyway, after i time to cool everything down, the thing i remember the most from ep9 is actually when the librarian talks to Edd Snow about his true identity... It feels real and touching

I think Joffrey is going to be a very lousy king, and i hope he dies because of it.
His mother IS a huge bitch, but she knows how to play the game. He's going to end up like King Aerys if he decides to ignore all her advice and live by his own childish whims.
I kinda want to read the books, though i'm not sure if i should spoil the series by reading the books or fill in inevitable blanks with the books after the series is over.
Am i right to assume that this whole first season is the first book? So if i start reading the book,,, say,, on saturday, i could finish the book and the first season on the same day?

my wife and I are waiting for the second season to finish before we start watching this

Oh wow i am sooooo pissed off omg

i am the same. I am not the cleanest person and I have cut myself up a lot and don't clean it lol. I haven't had much trouble with infections.
probably not as dirty as they were back then though.

Arya... Tyrion... Rob... Snow...
Plenty of likeable characters are left, i don't get all the fuss about "you killed the main character" when there are about 5-10 "Main" characters...
@Infections: What has carved you open? Is your immunesystem "ready/prepared"? Could you wash it with clean wather immediatly (or "better stuff").
And last but probably most important: Where you lucky?
There is a reason that Infections where the number 1 death cause in the past (before people where more hygienic and the invention of iirc "Penicilin" which was probably the biggest medical invention ever)...
It has nothing to do with being a badass or a "especially" dirty person. I had a coworker that got serious Blood-Poisioning from a SINGLE fucking Bee-Sting... They are not "weaker" than your average guy... Some are just unlucky.

I have not read the books but be careful to fall in love with any of them

Poor Ned! God, can't believe it. I hope Robb gives that little shit Joffrey what's coming to him. Also, that witch...I'm pretty sure is just evil. Drogo's wound should have been cleanable, instead it becomes an evil, nasty looking infection, that some she's all too eager to fix with blood magic, which cannot sound good. Also, Danaery's going in there to give birth is going to end real poorly. Calling it now. I keep thinking of the zombie baby in Dawn of the Dead.

It was a joke about him banning Joffrey from the show...

Man I am so not sure about that right now. If she is evil then what exactly is she going to accomplish with this blood magic stuff?

Not every cut leads automatically to an infection and also in Europe or the U.S. we are vaccinated for exactly those cases where we cut ourselves or we have an unclean wound. Constitution is a factor but it absolutley is no garanty for a wound not to inflame. No one is immune to any sort of infections, but we can reduce the likelyhood to a bearable minimum. In the end it comes down to luck if an injury inflames, but nowadays we have the tools to fight against those bacteria...

Infections are caused by bacteria and other living organisms. If you have good resistance to your local ones then you'll be ok. Also remember, good diet increases body resistance and in medieval times people had very poor diets: average person lived only ~30 (?) years or so.
You might also get unlucky and somehow get the dangerous organisms to your wound.
But like someone already said, if body is used to fending off bad things then it's more resistant to it, for the same reason being too clean is bad: your body never gets training in fighting vs bacteria etc, so you get sick more easily, allergies and such.
