"Unprecedented". And it's already clear for a second season. People are still going to have to watch, I really hope people don't quit watching the series for this fact alone.
That is the one difference with a book to the TV series, I think it's a LOT easier to give up the series between episodes than it is to drop a book 80% of the way through it. I'm pretty sure most of those people that are so angry about this will at least tune in to the finale though. As for season 2, who knows... at least I'll be watching!
As for today's episode, I was pleasantly surprised with the Maester Aemon reveal too. I was worried they would kind of gloss over that, but they made sure Jon was as confused, and then shocked as he should be. I loved that look of disbelief paired with the "..who are you?...."

While Eddard is a great character, I see him as more of a vehicle to bring this story to life. I'm sure his death will have vast implications on the state of the realm. I guess a Lannister doesn't always keep his word.
Didn't read the books. Truthfully I knew he was dead the moment Joffrey demanded his head, and definitely when the solemn music started playing. Ever since the Khaleesi's brother (his name escapes me... Drogo?) had gold poured on his head, I knew this show means business.
Also, Ned in general wasn't really doing much. And I didn't see a way for him to escape his predicament, unless one of his captors had a change of heart and helped him escape.
Oh, and about the battle scenes... it was pretty confusing when Jamie was randomly taken prisoner by the Starkes. I don't expect them to have a 300-style, full CG epic battle sequence... but at least have something in the script to show that a battle happened.

They did, it was completely obvious that the battle had occurred. They just didn't show anything until it was just a field of bodies with people running around executing the wounded.

There was more a lot more subtle foreshadowing than that in previous episodes. Not a book spoiler but I'll put it in spoilers anyway incase people want to rewatch season one and discover them on their own.

They showed the aftermatch of the battle between the 2000 men and Tywin Lannisters army, but we didn't see the battlefield of the battle between Jaime and Robs armies.
But i must admit i can't see how one would be confused about Jaimes capture. In the previous episode it was mentioned plenty of times that their choices were to march aganist Tywin, or arround him to relief the siege of Riverrun (against Jaime). When it was revealed they had chosen the latter it wasn't really surprising to me at least to see Jaime captured, and all in all i like this way of doing things as it puts the emphasis on the drama and intrigue instead of grand battles.
In any case this show is amazing and i CAN'T believe i have to wait a week for the conclusion !!!!
I wish we got a bit more of a back story as to why Ned decided to give in and admit his treason. Was it because of Varys's last words about Ned's kids? I can only assume so.

Exactly that. I thought it was made pretty clear
I don't see why/how they would've added more of a backstory to it.

Not only was it well done dramatically, but his monologue that made the connection with/foreshadowed Ned's "confession" at the end was so powerful. another excellent cast!
100% agree I thought that was the best scene in the entire episode. I also like Jorah's fight scene ... don't need armor eh? lol.
this series is the bestt! so much epicness ps i remember there was a link to a video of the making of the series here on this thread? cant seem to find it! would someone be kind enough to link me?

They also hinted it in the Jon/Maester Aemon scene, when they talk about what men chooses when they must choose between love and honor.
Great episode, the Targaryen reveal blew my mind. I somehow feel that not killing Jaime is gonna be a big mistake, but I guess that's kind of obvious. Like the bad guy of a Bond movie never quite managing to finish off Bond with the bigass laser-drill.
