Littlefinger's primary motivation for betraying Ned was simply because that was what was most beneficial to him. Ideally Littlefinger would have prefferred Ned accepts his suggestion and takes over as Joffrey's Hand reagent to rule and place Littlefinger as his partner. When Ned refused and insisted on Stannis then that had the opposite effect. Littlefinger knew Stannis would likely remove him from power and bring his own hand picked advisors.

I always assumed that the reason Littlefinger's betrayed Ned because Ned married the girl that Littlefinger's loved. Ned mentions that he promised his wife that he would help him and I assumed that was because his wife saved his life from that duel. I didnt read the book and I thought this was case.

Joffrey is a little bitch and everyone hates him. So at the very least I guess that means his actor is doing his job lulz

Meh nobody is a true king, only ones who can really make that claim are the Targaryens, and even there claim only came through conquest.

People have covered things pretty well for Littlefinger, but for me it all pales next to that scene where Ned asks him to gather the Goldcloaks for him. Yes, he loved Cate. Yes, he resents Ned and his brother for what happened to him in the past. But he is calculating enough to get past that - as people have said his ambition is limitless.

Now he has the chance to work with Ned, or to work with the Lannisters. Which do you think he could prosper under? Ned hates Littlefinger for his lack of honour, something he tells Littlefinger to his face. Petyr asked Ned to work with him and was laughed at - at that moment Littlefinger will have calculated the potential future under Ned's regency. Not a lot of opportunity for fudging books and skimming a little profit for himself. Ned is far too rigid for that, and this conversation proves it. Instead he has the chance to betray Ned and pretty much continue as he did under Robert, but under his Queen and the young king instead. The potential for power and profit was much greater under the Lannisters than it ever could have been under Ned. For me, that was the primary motivation.

You sound like Varys. Which is arguably a good thing. "I serve the realm, and the realm needs peace" and all that...

Ultimately though, Littlefinger is a type of person who puts his emotions aside in favor of his ambition. Ned's goal is to get Stannis on the throne because he is the rightful heir, but nobody wants Stannis on the throne, seeing as he will pick an entirely new council and will get vengence against all those who were allies with the Targaryens (Littlefinger goes into more detail on this in the book).

Just in case you missed something, or forgot, rewatch the older episodes and pay attention to every part of the storyline that mentions the dagger that was supposed to kill Bran. If you understand the dagger plotline, then you understand Littlefinger.

In retrospect, the storyline behind the dagger is kind of unrealistic (book spoiler). Littlefinger comes off as way too much of a Chessmaster archetype, to the point it is unbelievable simply due to the events that occur which are completely out of his control (Varys being a counterpoint in that he actively attempts to involve himself into the events he masterminds).

yes this is my take on it. Ned never intended to rule, he was going to hand the throne over to Stannis as soon as possible and return to Winterfell once Stannis named a new Hand.

So glad they made a series out of this. Hope it has lots of seasons. Eddard is my favorite character as usual.

Got done with episode 6.

Karma just took a giant shit on Viserys. But I was expecting that scene to be more gory, the stuff is basically like candle wax. I mean he screams for like a second and thats it.

I have been extremely please with the performance with Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo. In the book, I wasn't necessary a big fan of the character, but seeing the character in live action. He plays the role perfectly.

I would love to join the discussion of the series, but I read the books. I know I will accidentally spoil a plot point, and I want y'all to get shocked when certain scenes come up.

Read a great interview in Empire, a British film magazine. Momoa talked about how he read the part of Drogo. Basically he looked at the book and thought about how the Dothraki spoke a different language, have an alien culture and would be overbearing in tone and physical presence. So at the first interview he walked in the room and immediately did the New Zealand Haka to the casting directors. Drogo's speech of how he will attack the Andals reminded me of it. Now I know why.

I've been in a small room with a Maori doing the Haka, and I was terrified of him even though I knew it was coming and he's the nicest guy in the world. I can only imagine what it must have been like for the casters. Well played, sir. Well played.

I'd bet on Sir Barristan (king's guard commander) as he was kinda pissed when the queen shredded Robert's will

just in case i'm right, i swear i didn't read the book so don't count that as spoiler. Just a random guess as this is truly the only way out I can see for Ned...

didnt read the book.. i think barristan could work sth.. but 1 man is not enough.. but remember Ned sent a Letter to Stannis Baratheon , the 1st in the line of succesion , he migth have sth to say =)
and is probably coming to kings landing with a few of his guys..
also khal drogo migth crash the party..we dont know if the 2 stories are 100% at the same time..

As King's guard commander they could go praetorian on the lannisters ass if he was made sure of the whole assasination of the previous hand / incest non legit heir / over wine-ing the king.

EDIT: just to be explicit : the praetorian guard often killed the caesar if deemed unfit or if a better candidate was making a better offer.

This is not the Praetorian Guard; the Kingsguard is sworn to give their lives for the protection of the king. This is why Jaime is so universally reviled, even though he technically did the right thing.

Don't spoiler events that have aired on TV please.
