I'm not so sure right now. I loved the books and think they are better than the show. However I watch the show with friends and they like to speculate on what will happen next and I can't really join in on it. Sometimes they are pretty close to being right about things and sometimes they are super far away and the most I can do is say, "No comment."

Read them when the season is over if you must, because they will overpower the awesomeness which is GoT on TV! Definitely planning on getting the books as soon as the season is over. A year is going to be way too long to wait, but the show is too awesome to spoil for a week.

Definitely watch the show first. Suspense and tension is done much more effectively, and more importantly, more succinctly on the screen than on the page. You won't get all the nuances by watching the show, especially on the first viewing, but that's where the beauty of the book comes in. All the subtle descriptions, foreshadowing and hints as to intentions will review itself through the book, and because you have seen the show, you will have some idea of what to look for in the book. Further, by watching the show first, you can read the book more patiently and miss less detail.
