Seriously, does no one in this thread know how ratings work?
YOU ARE NOT TRACKED WHEN YOU TURN ON YOUR TV. EVER. Unless you have a ratings (aka Nielson box).
There is absolutely zero difference to the ratings whether or not you watch it on TV on HBO, or whether you watch it online. Unless you happen to own a ratings box (in which case it matters tremendously).
Ratings systems take a small sample of people (anywhere between 1k to 10k), They then attempt to use known statistical data to weight the contributions of people to get an approximate idea of how many people tuned in to watch a show.
TLDR: If you do not have a ratings box, or do not fill out a ratings related form, YOU DO NOT CONTRIBUTE TO GAME OF THRONES RATINGS IN ANY WAY.

How are you supposed to contribute to the ratings if the country you're in doesn't get HBO? Plus, HBO has said time and again that they don't really base many of their decisions on ratings. HBO sells it's programming to overseas companies for foreign distribution. They said that episodes of the show are selling for about 2.5 million each, which was a major factor in ordering a second season. Still doesn't give it to us germans for at least another year, if at all. And then we have to cope with shitty dubs. God i hate Germany for this.
jsut watch it online and buy the DVDs. I will do the same

+ Show Spoiler [episode 7] + I'd barely even heard of this series before this, but I am well and truly hooked now. Just watch a mini-marathon of ep 5/6/7 last night, and am deeply saddened by the fact that it will be 2 weeks before I can continue the series.
So far, I like Jon, Arya, Dany, Littlefinger, and Tyrion. Jaime is doing a really good job of selling his character, imo. I don't know whether to like him or hate him, but regardless, I love seeing him on screen, he is always entertaining. Not having read the books, I hope Arya has some epic scenes in her future, namely putting all that sword-fighting training to use. Glad to see Robert die. I didn't like him from the moment he appeared on screen. So far all the crazy womenfolk have been rather disappointing to me, though. What normal women are there left now, lol. Arya seems well on her way to becoming a(awesomely and cute) fighter. Cersei has started her twisted bid for power through her bastard son. Lady Stark I feel is going to do more and more retarded stuff as the series goes on...I mean, she imprisoned Tyrion basically on a hunch, and almost had him killed without a trial. When she hears Ned is imprisoned(and I assume he'll be dead soon) I think she's going to go full retard. Her sister is even worse. Dany just ate a stallion heart, watched her brother killed by having molten gold poured on his head, and convinced her warlord husband to cross the sea and make his bid for the iron throne. What normal females are left?
P.S. I like Littlefinger. Such a devious little bastard. That look right at the end of episode seven, "I told you not to trust me". LOL.

Anyway, as someone explained earlier, cable networks don't care that much about ratings to begin with, they just want you to pay for their channel.
So anyone downloading the show instead of paying for HBO (that is, if your country has HBO), is certainly not helping.

Not even remotely true. While yes HBO runs on subscriptions, it uses ratings as a way of gauging which shows attract enough attention to get people to subscribe. In the context of Game of Thrones, ratings means infinitely more than overall subs to HBO.
If Game of Thrones had horrific ratings, HBO's conclusion would be: "This show is not attracting the interest of many people. It therefore is not encouraging people to stay subscribed."
Conversely, when it has great ratings, HBO's conclusion is that Game of Thrones is worth producing because its large appeal relative to the total HBO subscriber base indicates that it will pull in (or at least retain) subscribers.
When comparing the two, ratings mean dramatically more than the amount of subscriptions when talking about the future of a given program. In the context of GoT, subscriptions only matter if a scenario were to occur in where lack of subscriptions caused HBO to no longer be able to fund its shows.
And no, a (something that would never happen anyways) massive spike in HBO subscriptions would not suddenly increase the budget for GoT. From a corporate perspective, GoT is a very successful product at the budget currently allocated for it. Spending more money on it (when it's already so successful at its current price point), is not a decision any corporate head would make. They would roll the additional money into other projects, or simply pure profit for HBO as a whole.
TLDR: Ratings are the main thing that matters - 99% of people do not effect them. Additional subscriptions do not matter unless HBO is going to die - it's not.

So anyone downloading the show instead of paying for HBO (that is, if your country has HBO), is certainly not helping. true, piracy is piracy even Network TV shows, when you don't watch the commercials you're less likely to buy the advertised products and there by hurting the companies who advertise and the networks. It's never a victim-less crime. Game of thrones will survive or fail based on it's own merits or lack there of obviously if piracy of an HBO show would cripple HBO they wouldn't have lasted a day so there's no need to worry for the sake of the show while the majority of people (HBO's target demographic) are fine with paying for HBO's material.
I like how all my complaints about the show are slowly being rectified week by week. When I complain about lack of fantasy I get a girl who isn't burnt by fire. When I mope about lack of action more fight scenes happen. Not completely satisfied with the political Intrigue? Just add more bastards! So now I only don't like that I haven't seen Trevelyan whip out a mac9 and go all rambo on a bunch of helpless street urchins. I fully expect the next episode to be shocking and befuddling.

Episode 7 is only available to US citizens and the big mod note at the top of the thread clearly state all episode 7 discussions must be put in spoiler tags.
Edit: But all this is irrelevant. We should stay on topic and discuss the episodes.

HBO takes DVD sales into account, so anybody who feel that they for some reason or other may not have had the chance to contribute to HBO's incentive to continue the series, please buy the DVD! I sure intend to.

Is that even supporting HBO at all. Maybe they get some small revenue from having series images on the new covers, but apart from that, I doubt it. It will support the book publishers and Martin, sure, but will not contribute much to renewing the series for a 3rd season.
