Maybe we only get those surprise moment at the end of uneven seasons, like season 1, 3, 5 etc. | ||

Every evidence we have is of pretty straight English succession, so if all Stark children are dead or presumed dead, and Ned's brothers and sisters are all dead, then it goes to the descendants of Ned's paternal grandfather, from whoever the second oldest was and on down to his children and their children, going male first, then female, running down oldest to youngest. Bran is the proper heir to Winterfell, but if he stays on his mission (in secret) he's probably out of the running. Which means two people are now sheltering Starks they believe to be the legitimate heir. Rickon with StarkBannerman#43 has the better claim than Sansa, but both the Bannerman and Littlefinger probably aim to install their favorite, and Littlefinger is a crafty dude, and I wouldn't hold out hope for a long and prosperous life for Rickon. Unless Westeros has straight agnatic (Salic) succession, Sansa and her children are the most likely candidates for the post. Which makes Littlefinger's new job to discredit Lord Bolton (or his newly legitimized heir) in the eyes of the crown (mostly Cercei probably), then replace him (or kill him and replace Barry) to have control over the North with Sansa. | ||

There should be ironborn raiders all over the north. An about the distant family, I'm pretty sure the karstarks were related to the starks some generations ago. | ||
