When i look at season 3 and 5 they are what i would call "filler" season. By filler i mean when you look at the start of the season to the end of season not much has changed with the overall picture of the characters. In these seasons you are introduced to new characters (Miguel and Lumen) and by the end of season they are gone without really effecting the landscape of the show that much. Now you could still make an intresting "filler season" if the main killer is intresting. Season 4 is so beloved because it has a great killer that people were facinated with. Season 4 was basically going to be a filler season ,although their was a ton of development of dexter balancing family life with his second life, untill the end with the huge twist with the death of rita. Lets say the death of rita dosent happen so there is no huge twist people still would have loved season 4 because trinity was so cool. Basically if your not going to have a big development in a season you need a great killer. Season 5 had a so-so killer and season 3 had by far the worst killer top that off with basically nothing crazy happening and you have a bad season.

Also to contribute to the season ranking discussion I would say I like all the season but if I had to pick a least favorite it would be 3. The best has to be the one that got us all hooked season 1. I can't wait for season 7. They said the series ends after season 8 and I think we got a glimpse of who season 8 will be about some this season(6). So 7 should be good but I almost feel like it will be a big build up to the series finale season 8. Either way looking forward to it.

I don't really know why you would ever call season 4 a "filler" season in any respect. The whole idea of the season was Dexter being a family man as well as a father. That's what the whole thing was supposed to be about. Trinity fell into that whole idea and it made a really interesting season. Season 1 had all the intrigue of the Ice Truck Killer and his relation to Dexter. Obviously awesome. Season 2 seemed to constantly ask the question of whether Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher or the Dark Defender, and it paralleled well with Doakes, who is the Anti-Hero to Dexter's Anti-Villain. Season 3 I think the question was "Can Dexter have a friend?" which is a pretty silly premise. I don't really get the season at all, and it was poorly executed and kind of boring. It doesn't help that the ending feels way too clean and neat. However, it does set up Season 4 pretty well at the end. Season 4 asked about Dexter as a family man as well as serial killer. Totally awesome, and had huge parallels with Trinity. Dexter's unwillingness to kill Trinity immediately is understandable. Everything clicks pretty well. Season 5 was more about Dexter being broken after the death of Rita and it was paralleled with Lumen being "broken". The status quo was relentlessly upheld, which why I think people are saying it was awful. The ending is disappointing in every way imaginable, but I didn't think the season was that bad honestly. Of course Dexter and Lumen having sex was just totally fucking stupid. Season 6 was all about religion and redemption. Can Dexter be redeemed? Personally actually really liked everything with Brother Sam. They seemed to drop the redemption thing after the whole thing with Jonah, sadly. But imo Professor Gellar was totally friggin' awesome, so I don't quite know why people are saying that the villain sucked. And of course it sets up Season 7 really well (both Deb and the Intern!). Season 3 was pretty crappy, but it did set up Season 4 really well, which was an awesome season. Season 6 once again gives a fantastic setup to Season 7, so I'm really looking forward to it.

4 finale was the best Dexter episode hands down. 1 was the best season, 2-4 tied, 6, then 5 (nothing really too spectacular in 5) and 3 was meh. (I'm comparing all this to Dexter standards btw. Not normal TV standards haha) My only real question is WTF was the point of that intern and the ice truck killer's hand.... so fucking random. Shoulda addressed that before ending the season. Seems like an interesting side plot but it will lose its potency during the hiatus. UNLESS HES THE NEXT KILLER. DA DA DAAAAAAAAAA

I don't know either, I think it's pretty much a self fulfilling prophecy from people being used to shows declining, watching through negative/critical lenses instead of just enjoying the show. Imo season 6 is the best season apart from season 1, I loved the whole "Tyler Durden"-thing with Gellar. But that cliffhanger is killing me. Did not like the "in love"-thinge though, that's just wrong. I watched all 6 seasons during the last month, my favorite show by far. Don't know why I ignored my friends recommendations for so long. Only started watching because I was without internet for 3 weeks.
