Naruto wakes up. Timeskip didn't happen.
It is still pre-timeskip and 12 year old Naruto had a fever dream(for 350 chapters...) after losing the fight with Sasuke.
Real story unfolds from there.

Chouji actually died from taking his 3 pills in the Sasuke Retrieval Arc. Neji lost partial control of his arm after his shoulder was crushed by an arrow in his fight with Kidoumaru.
Shortly after winning against Naruto, Sasuke got tracked down and caught by ANBU and is currently under arrest and being interrogated.
Since Kabuto fled there have been investigations about what he knew and for possible other spies that work for Orochimaru.
Next story hook: Jiraiya visits Naruto in hospital. Naruto swears he will hunt down Orochimaru once he is fully healed.

The story that could should have been.

would be pretty cool actually but then would feel so trollish at the same time that I'm sure kishi would lose any audience he's had left in an instant lol

Hmm then i would say Naruto wakes up and realizes that he lost vs. Neji and everything after never happened. We see the full chuunin tournament without oro attacking the village and after that more tournaments and Naruto getting stronger step by step. Then at some point Oro comes into play again. I always thought that time when new characters were introduced and we saw a lot of 1on1s vs. schoolmates/rivals could have been stretched more. I would have loved it.

I'd really hoped that they would develop the ranks more. I know some of the ninja gained new ranks between arcs and stuff but from what we actually saw I don't think anyone got past chunin

I think that's the case though like other people said, I would prefer we got more tourneys etc... those were always so much fun to watch.

That's why Dragon Ball had like 6 world tournaments.

I would just be happy if Kishi would write story arcs that are actually ninja-y. Most of the techniques might as well be spells or called kamehameha. Or turning into the hulk.
Chiyo vs Sasori was a good fight. The only other good one I can think of was Shikamaru vs Hidan.
Just think about it:
Traps and explosive Kunais. And he beat a voodoo priest that cannot physically die.
Man, back then I was still hopeful.

Shikamaru vs Temari and Lee vs Gaara was also awesome in the animu at least, just watched em both again. But yeah was way more fun when they used tools and tactics instead of just "BE MORE STRONG RWAR".

Not sure why you guys are surprised, Kishi said his inspiration was dbz lol so as much as I would've also loved to see ninja tactics, tools etc... it as inevitable :/

About every shonen mangaka that is active now has been inspired by dragon ball.
Dragon ball(manga) ran from 1984 to 1995. And then came derivative works like GT, and games and movies(though not stellar) and so forth.
It was the one big thing in the 90s last century last millenium.

And unlike Naruto, Dragon ball found time for the odd slice of life bit or comedy bit every now and then(including characters that only hang around because they have been there the whole time).

well yes, of course. My point is that since Kishi was inspired by it, it's not surprising that he'll get sucked into the whole 'let's train more, gets more power' that the Saiyan constantly did. It could also be that he felt like he ran out of ideas with the timeskip so he just opted for power > all. Don't get me wrong, I still miss how moves actually had weaknesses, weren't overpowered etc... but can't do much about it.

In that case I misunderstood you. My bad.

"Train and get stronger" was the main mode of becoming a better fighter in dragon ball. For Naruto the main more of being a better fighter was being a better ninja, outsmarting and outmaneuvering and laying better traps.
It's a problem with the scope of battle, in my opinion. Kishi wanted Naruto to fight and beat a supernatural being. If not to say god, as in "the literally strongest thing that exists".
Such things are always bad for stories.

Kishi passed the point of no return where being a better ninja stopped mattering when he introduced Shukaku

I rewatched a bunch of the older Shippuden episodes. Man are they good. They even still made a big deal about chakra natures and chakra forms, and what was weak against what. And it was really ninja-y too. *sigh*

No worries. Well, they did have it early on but Kishi just forgot about the outsmarting and outmaneuvering and settled for power > all. I don't like this supernatural being fight tbh.

I disagree, I don't think Shukaku being introduced was a problem. If anything, it made for an appreciation of those who were on the level of the Bijuu. You get a lot more respect for Hashirama, Madara etc... I think what happened is that Kishi just didn't know how to make ninja outsmart their opponents so he started adding OP abilities and made it all about power levels. Think of it this way: it's much easier to write a story where only several characters can compete with power. You don't need to explain anything lol.

ya, they still do. I enjoyed the early parts of Shippuden. I think it's around the Pain arc (maybe after) that things started going downhill and we saw more of this more power rather than better ninja techniques.

It's actually kind of common in Japanese media for the protagonist to fight and kill god. I'm not a big fan of that kind of story telling but I think it could have been done well if, along with getting stronger, the focus was on the tactics. Like we all keep saying

I know that's a thing. I associate it more with japanese rpg's, all the way back to Final Fantasy 1 .
From the top of my head, manga and anime have a far lower rate of fighting against god than games.
Could be that I just had luck in which manga/anime I watched, but still.

This isn't just japanese storytelling, all most all of the myhologies incorperate this storyline in one way or another. Like Perseus slaying the gorgon or Cetus. Actually most of these stories I can think of are normal human -> adversity -> training -> super human. although perseus was a demi-god he wasn't battle ready at the start of the story.

The big exception I can think of is the monkey king who was born powerfull and goes on a journey of repentence, trying to learn responsibility etc etc.
