Yea, he obviously dies after casting that spell like that old grandma's version of it from the Gaara gets stolen arc. Doing it to revive one of his puppets is useless. Maybe he wouldn't have died from reviving just one body but it still would have taken strength out of him and his strength is limited/connected to the strength of his bodies I believe.
EDIT: And there is no reason to assume it's just for people he killed, it's just that all the people in Konoha were killed by him so his revival of them was only people he killed.
