HxH is imo the best fighting shonen (well the best i saw obviously) but cmon "best story ever written" is maybe a bit overselling it. Now you set the bar so high that he can only be disappointed 
The chimera ant arc for example has clear pacing issues (still a great arc though)
With that being said, yes i would recommend HxH, definitely does pretty much everything better than DBS :D
Warnign though, it takes a few episodes to get good, the early ones are rather bad/mediocre.

Since we are shilling for non DB related shows now I will just throw out the obvious Gintama rec. It does its shonen parts well enough and has a bunch of other goodies ;p

I personally tend to stick to watching concluded shows. I make an exception for DBS because I heard about its release really early and ain't nothing I can do, but my free time tends to come in bursts. Catching up with TV shows on a weekly basis makes things worse.

Jiren isnt a bad guy...so I feel they will do some bullshit like making Frezza the real bad guy or...the misterious invisible fighters no one knows anything about from universe 4.

Yeah that's a recurring theme in the DB universe... Saiyans are vegetables, Vegeta's family are clothes, the gods are alcohols, etc. (Moscato is a wine.)

Sorry but Gintama hasn't been any good for a long time. There are only so many times "feisty hot chick likes to eat a lot and is incredibly strong" can be funny and "I am not fighting to protect the world, I am fighting to protect my friends" can be emotionally tearjerking. The entire show really needed to end after about season 3. What's worse is they decided to fuck it up even more by making his former master, who previously had an aura of facelessness that made you feel kind of a deep respect for, and it was cool that his students diverged on some wanting revenge, some wanting to just move on and live happily like he would have wanted, but now the author has decided to make him into some weird immortal alien who wants to rule the world and if you chop off his head, it'll grow back, like what the fuck?
