Doom remains one of my favorite ![]() Not his best, but better than average these days. On April 22 2013 08:48 hoot00 wrote: I think Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore are two of the best rappers in the game right now Idk, I don't like them that much, I guess they are relevant, but it's a different style to say CunninLynguists, Big Boi, Big Krit, Killer Mike, Shabazz, Gibbs, Madlib and all the older dudes like Doom who are still very relevent. They fit in a different category for me, with Kanye and stuff. Too white I think. Culture-wise. I hope you know what I mean.

I mean, it's not the best thing ever but he switches styles like no other. also i'm not big into underground rap like this thread/most internet discussions seem to be. not to jump on an old discussion but it just kinda bores me most of the time. maybe because they're mostly up and coming and aren't developed, but even immortal tech is just meh to me. case in point, i like Take Care drake better than Room for Improvement drake. maybe its just me and to jump in on this i feel that a lot of that has to do with the fact that a lot of rappers are coming up on the internet and havent been involved in gangs and the like. theres still a lot of trash out there though Yeah it's not the 80s/90s anymore. Gangsta rap is old news. No more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jheri_curl (Ice Cube + Eazy E etc) + Show Spoiler +

I'll admit that I was pretty impressed with Live Love A$AP, but then again most of the good tracks on that album were produced by The Alchemist or Clams Casino so I'm not even sure what that says about Rocky other than he knows how to dress and hire good producers. Speaking of which, Domo Genesis & The Alchemist mixtape was pretty good, I'd encourage people to check that out. On April 22 2013 09:33 hoot00 wrote: When I say "In the game", I mean current rappers. As for Kanye, why no love for 808's and Heartbreak? Sad album, but probably my favorite of his. Found this a few days ago: Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek (Reflection Eternal) - The Blast + Show Spoiler +

A Tribe Called Red https://soundcloud.com/a-tribe-called-red/a-tribe-called-red-das/ Apparently DR broke up whilst they were recording their 2nd album and Red decided to publish it anyway. Makes me sad to know that we'll never get more DR albums, because their tapes were seriously AOTY material. Then again, HEEM's solo work is also really impressive, especially "Nehru Jackets". The thing that was awesome about DR is their willingness to do absolutely fucking crazy stuff with their music. For example: I haven't seen any alternative hip-hop in here so it's about time to get that started. K-os and K'naan are my favourites by far: K'naan(My username comes from his full name, K'naan Abdi Warsame) K-os And more of this would be posted if it wouldn't clog up the thread.

A few songs I particularly like: + Show Spoiler + He may not be exceptionally "rappy," but he is very genuine in all of his music and doesn't just copy whatever is hot at the moment. His personality comes through quite strong and I find it to be very refreshing and enthralling. Hope someone else here enjoys him even a little bit ![]()

I love me some Kendrick Lamar and his unique sound; he's a breath of fresh air to the scene. He's just gonna get bigger and bigger in popularity as the years go by. Swimming Pools (Drank) is a damn addicting song. He's got a lot of potential, along with Childish Gambino. I also agree with those who said Big K.R.I.T. is also one of the biggest upcoming new talents. He's the shit... (pause) Country Shit that is. That's a goddamn banger of a song. I like how he seems to have proper respect for the old school pioneers who paved the way instead of the idiotic "Ey yooo I run dis rap shit nowww I invented hip hop, big booty hoe bitches and swag b yolooo" shit that a lot of trash new rappers spout. (Sorry Kendrick, but you also fall victim to rapping about big booty hoes and being famous and all that. Should cut back on that shit.) Since I'm studying linguistics as well, I'm almost obligated to shout out my love for CunninLynguists, along with my admiration for Eminem's talent of bending words to make them rhyme and use of multisyllabic rhymes. Although I don't like most of the content from Eminem's lyrics, the way he executes them is simply genius. Also, respect to Frank Ocean to being one of the first hip hop artists to come out of the closet and have the balls to talk about his bisexuality. His stuff is great. And since I'm from the Bay Area, I will always love me some Bay hip hop/rap, awww yeah hyphy movement represennnt This shit still go hard and always will. A true Bay classic right here. Btw, if reading a hip hop/rap review blog that mostly bashes on the biggest upcoming rappers of today in an absolutely hilarious satirical way sounds remotely interesting to you, you should check out http://bigghostnahmean.blogspot.com/. The way the blogger words and delivers their insults is pure gold. I especially like how the blogger shares my hate for Drake, aka Aubrey aka Male Duck aka Young Garnier Fructis. Here's a quote of one of his many poetic insults towards Drake (still worth reading if you like Drake): + Show Spoiler + "Aka the Ryan Seacrest of rap. Son is the safest nigga on earth. This the type a NAHGGER that old rich white men try to set up wit they daughters n shit. This nigga wasnt born yo....he was blossomed. When he aint startin pillow fights on tour n pollinatin flowers n shit son stays spittin wit that tenderized Stephen Hawking voice. The niggas heart got a ponytail. Son could probably make you any origami animal you ask him to namsayin. He the type a nigga to sprinkle rose pedals on his bed before he go to sleep n shit. Son could probably frost a cake usin his eyes nahmean. This niggas moms n pops basically got Rick Rolled when the doctor said "Its a boy!" But it aint like Tone wanna see the nigga get torn to pieces by a pack a wolves n shit. If I seen him would the god wanna beat the garnier fructis outta him? I dont kno b. Maybe?"

College Dropout and Late Registration imo probably set the bar for mainstream alt hiphop in the past decade. Yeezy will never make another album like either again, unfortunately. In your opinion ![]() I heartily disagree that it lacks significant tracks. Even the singles bar good life are significant either for content or production. And songs like I wonder, Everything I am, Flashing Lights and Can't Tell Me Nothing are all great, and as good as anything he put out on Late Registration or College Dropout. Plus The Glory bangs hard ;P I think that MBDTF and Graduation are both better than College Dropout and Late Registration (though its insanely close with late registration and them, all 3 are incredible), I disagree that he hasn't been able to improve on them.

I have a big split between rapping ability and ability to make music. It's like, Nas, who is a fantastic rapper, but sometimes can't put together an amazing album worthy of his rapping skill. So while Drake or something isn't always the best rapper his music sounds good, I can listen to it over and over again, and I have fun playing it. I consider albums as "good" if i can loop it over and over again without being bored, mostly cause I almost always have music playing. So for me, Graduation can go on that list cause there's always a level of depth I can listen to, whether its his words, production, flow, or the little samples thrown in.

I'm not a huge Drake but I agree with you completely overall. Nas gets so much hype, and while I can appreciate his lyricism, I'm almost never imprssed with his albums. He seems almost hilariously music deaf, and has the rare ability to bring the worst out the otherwise talented producers he works. Music in hip-hop matters hugely, and I love a good lyrical artist. But it needs to be paired good beats, otherwise it means nothing to me. Its also why Jay-Z>>>Nas to me. Jay-Z, even at his most commercial makes fantastic production choices, consistently across albums, whereas Nas makes horrible ones: When Jay-Z makes a commercial song he still manages to sound genuine and makes epic (in the most literal sense) songs like Empire State of Mind, whereas Nas makes cynical and terrible shit like this: + Show Spoiler +
