I mean why do so many people apparently go out of their way to promote this show in a blatant attention seeking manner? There is probably someone who started this whole thing by being a troll laughing so hard right now that people are into this. And if not, then I seriously have to question and worry about the future of the human civilization. Peoples standards of what they think is high quality art/music/entertainment has been in rapid decline. At least this show seems to be cute and harmless. It is at least not detrimental to society promoting irresponsible or violent behavior. If you want to watch a show like this just to feel happy because its so lighthearted there's really nothing wrong with that. It is just a little troublesome and disturbing to me to witness the general decline in the quality of contemporary art, music in particular. Combined with the seemingly irreversible decline of the United States economy, and a lack of quality education (American test scores are horrible now compared to other countries). The most worrisome thing to me is that most people don't really seem to care or know about what's going on in the world anymore. Everyone is so self absorbed with social media like Facebook, or stupid news articles and reports, that very few people seem to be in touch with reality. And now we have apparently an important demographic of our population (working class males) watching shows about little ponies intended for young girls. But at the end of the day entertainment is just that... entertainment. It does not need to be important, enlightening, relevant, or even appropriate. So I have no problem if people want to watch this show if they enjoy it. I just hope that peoples interest and ability to consume and create highly intellectual forms of entertainment does not further decline because of stuff like this. Um, it's a cartoon, and it's good at being a cartoon. I don't know what exactly you expect--I'd be extremely worried if cartoons were made to be anything like how you seem to want them to be. Of course it's not going to be the same type of writing as a novel or major live-acting TV series--it has to feature 22-minute completely self-contained segments. Although it's a HELL of a lot better than reality TV or most current cartoons which only pander to the lowest common denominator and get their ratings from false drama and hurting people in the former case and intentionally stupid and nonsensical characters in the latter case. People mention how good the show is because that happens with everything that's good enough to get a large following. We saw it with LOST, Pokemon, Game of Thrones, and Starcraft 2 itself. The only differences are that you wouldn't expect it here, and that the cartoon nature of the medium, as with something like Homestuck or Avatar: The Last Airbender, allows for a lot of fan content to be created. Plus the show simultaneously generated both a following and a meme based around reaction images, and that meme allowed it to spread extremely quickly. You also go on this big rant about education and such. I don't really get what that's got to do with enjoying a lighthearted and funny show. I'm a huge intellectual, as are most of us here, seeing as this is primarily a Starcraft website. I'm majoring in both mathematics and physics; I taught myself things way above my grade level in my childhood; I'm about to have the results of my first mathematical research endeavor published; I heavily analyze and critique every game I enjoy. (Forgive me; I don't mean to sound like a braggart.) But that has absolutely nothing at all to do with my choice in TV entertainment, and it's a complete non sequitor to assume that because I value education and intellectualism, I won't enjoy a cute, lighthearted show with genuinely good jokes, especially since I can enjoy it with my closest friends, who convinced me to watch it in the first place.

So I have no problem if people want to watch this show if they enjoy it. I just hope that peoples interest and ability to consume and create highly intellectual forms of entertainment does not further decline because of stuff like this. While powerful writing flourishes in long-form -- movies, TV series with hour long episodes and a plot that stretches across the seasons, books, etc -- short-form can still have excellent writing. What we typically associate with good writing is usually things that come from the build up and release available in long-form; things like a revelation of who the bad guy was, with clues cleverly dropped along the way, a hero finally overcoming their inside weakness, after wrestling with it throughout the series, everything building up toward a bow-strung tight climax that has you on the edge of your seat. These are great, but they're extremely hard to do with short-form. In fact, if writing well is an archery contest, long-form and short-form have different targets. Short-form would be doing itself a disservice to try to hit the goals of long-form. What I'm saying is this: just because short-form doesn't show the hallmarks of a well written long-form, doesn't mean it's not well written. Being a short format, new goals are introduced. It is said that you can boil story telling down to two primary elements: delivering emotion and disseminating ideas. And, for me (after having watched several episodes), FiM did that. The ideas that are being disseminated are aimed more toward children, things that well-adjusted adults ought to know (though reminders are good every once and a while). I think this is why a lot of people see it as childish. But FiM also delivers the emotion. It takes a while to adjust to, at least, for me. Being male and interested in explosions, Mythbusters and other manly things, it seemed quite outside my fair. So just allowing myself to enjoy the show took a while. But once I did, I could see how well FiM delivers on the emotional part (and for many who give it a fair chance, though perhaps not all). And that requires skill. The skill is not displayed in ways you are used to seeing, but, as an author, I can tell you it most certainly is there. Now, it's okay if you don't like it. Different strokes for different folks, yada yada. But you don't need to fear for this show's role in America's and others' "declining intellect". Some people like to be narrow minded, to declare they have found the best and don't need to see anything other. Some of those people may limit themselves to FiM in a way that robs them of the excellence of other art. But the error is theirs, not a result of some inherently degrading property of FiM. I appreciate FiM for what it offers -- the emotions it delivers, the skill of its execution, the ideas it's sharing (usually). Hopefully others will see the skill here as well, and maybe even learn to appreciate other works because of it. In any case, we do know it is bringing people together, giving smiles and "awws", and entertaining with skill. Also, as the other's have argued, there is an enormous amount of creative outpour that is expressing itself through this fandom. Dip your toes in, if you wish, and take a look. Or not. It's your choice, and I won't think you worse for it, but perhaps just a little poorer for lacking experience XD. Just make sure you get the good stuff -- after all, sturgeon's law...

Answer contains spoilers about episode 10. + Show Spoiler + Without Pinkie Pie there wouldn't be an episode 11 to 26. Because the swarm would have eaten all of Ponyville and most likely all of equestria after! How is that for a contribution. Also she makes for a lot of laughs in other episodes, that should be enough of a reason for Pinkie Pie's existence to begin with! ...Then again they could just replace every other pony with Fluttershy, I could totally see that working for me : ).

![]() No I haven't seen a whole lot of episodes. I didn't want to hate any poney, and honestly I'm trying to find some good in Pinkie. For example, at first I thought I would dislike Rarity (since she's "stuck up" so to say), but for some reason I like her instead. Which is surprising. In a similar vein I'm trying to like Pinkie but she's ... crazy. So no hate guys, honestly just honestly asking how I could start liking her because I like all of the ponies atm and I want to like pinkie but I'm not sure how. ![]() You recommend episode 10? So I'll watch it. And probably start liking her. Thanks guys.
