But if he was convinced that Rarity has influence, which actually would be a pretty sensible conclusion to reach(If he did some kind of check up on her, he could f.E find out that she has a direct connection to the princess (letters), which would mean that she is very much in her favour, she can obviously get a nice suite in the castle, and so on), it would be a far better choice to have her on her side for someone who is actually good at that high society stuff, like Fancypants. To be honest, even i would probably rate Rarity's importance above the whole lot of bootlickers combined, when i think about it.

And since he is good at that stuff, and obviously leading that bunch of ponies and knowing it, him stepping in to rescue Rarity is the logically best step to get a more influential friend (who also appears to be a bit naive, even better) with nearly no fear of losing his herd. After all, he is already in a firm position of control of those, and they will probably agree to anything he says anyways.

At least that is the way i understand that scene. Especially those small breaks in "This ... lovely pony from *wink* Ponyville was just about to tell me who made her ... charming dress". Then take a look at the instant behaviour shift once he is told that Rarity made the dress, and that they are in fact her friends. The only way this makes sense to me is when he is trying to get on Raritys good side.

Why didn't Rarity Effin tell everypony that she was friends with nopony other than Celestia's most fateful student? -.-

It might just be me, though. I really can't stand that type of comedies where the basis of everything "funny" is just awkwardness and people getting into progressively more and more stupidly escalating situations. It just makes me want to leave the room.

Also, i am REALLY not convinced of the resolution. To me, it felt much more like Fancypants still thinking that Rarity is very important, probably more important than him, and thus saying what she wants to hear by narrowly turning the insulting ridicule he originally planned for twilight into a compliment upon noticing that she is a friend of rarity. The high society was displayed as if that was a very common thing to do. And after all Rarity is still residing in the Castle, knows the trainer of the Wonderbolts (that lie never came out), and can get the whole grand ballroom of the castle for a private party with a few friends.

Maybe i got a wrong image of that pony, but to me he felt much more like the pinnacle of that false-friend high society then someone who actually would like the rest of the mane 6, or use his influence on other high-society ponies positively.
