So seeing as other TL threads lead to great musical findings in the past, I figured I'd see if any other people on here enjoy the epic musical yarn as much as I do.
Power Metal is a genre of music that fuses an ironic combination of classical orchestral music and heavy/speed meta, characterized by suicidal speeds, bombastic sounds, cheesy lyrics and extremely long, extremely pretentious guitar solos.
And that's precisely why I like it. It's refreshing in todays music world to find a subgenre of music that still takes itself just a little bit too seriously.
Most people when I tell them that I listen to power metal, they most often relate it to Dragonforce, and while Dragonforce is certainly power metal, in a genre that is notorious for sounding exactly the same, sounding exactly the same to even an experienced listener to myself is (in my opinion) intrinsically bad.
I think finding good power metal, much like my experience with electronic music, takes a good bit of luck, and a large helping of personal taste.
So here's what I'm listening to ATM.
Sorry I tried searching, but it's hard finding high quality videos on youtube of lesser known bands/older songs
If you're looking for cheesy pretentious lyrics, Rhapsody of Fire does it best, but I love them because they find a perfect way to balance classical sounds and modern guitar solos.
My favourite genre. I've been listening to almost nothing but Terasbetoni and Nightwish over and over again for the past 4 years <3 <3 also some Sonata Arctica.
I have a lot of other related music from these genres but I still love these two bands so much that I haven't and probably wont ever progress on to anything else haha :D
I always wanna watch a CS or WoW movie while listening to this kind of music. Back in 2002~ that's where i first discovered Nightwish, Hammerfall and Within Temptation. Awesome thread <3
I hope this thread doesn't get closed. Power metal is the best genre imo. As soon as i figure out how to post some kingdom for a heart, you'll get it >_<
Power Metal isn't called Power Metal because of orchestral music or whatnot, it's because of the rather impressive (usually high pitched) vocal performance.

You know I have to say I have been supremely dissapointed with their last two albums. BG was my fav band growing up pretty much and I keep giving them the benefit of the doubt, but I dont know if I will buy their next one.
I'm not such a huge power metal or symphonic metal fan, since a lot sounds like pre-fab keyboards with corny guys singing cheesy lyrics. But this song needs to be in this topic. And so does Dio.
Also, since RYM has the biggest and most statistically relevant rating sample, this claim can be in fact called an Objective , or interpersonal Objective truth. A category that implies certainty.
I want to like this stuff, but a lot of it is just bad thrash metal with cellos and violins. A few of the bands posted above (like Nightwish) proficiently incorporate the symphonic component into their music, but most don't really do it well.
I approve! waited for this thread the "metal" thread is imho to big and I love this kind of music just discovered Luca Turillis Dreamquest (the guitar player of Rhapsody of Fire) + Show Spoiler +
A bit long/epic, Sympony X but its good--- the climax/conclusion/epilogue still gives me chills, somehow it ties into everything you've heard before in such a brilliant way. It actually made me go out and read a translation of the Odyssey
from new maiden album, yeah, not technically power metal, but power metal essentally comes from them:

I love symphony X, i just wish their symphonic parts weren't so obviously synthesized, which honestly is a problem with a lot of power/symphonic metal bands. T_T
Kamelot is probably my favorite band. I was pretty sad when Khan left, especially since I missed my chance to see them live a few years back. Blah.
I'll admit that I don't know quite a few names in the genre, but I find a lot of the bands pretty boring, probably due to the vocals. Other than Kamelot most of the bands I like have female vocalists since I just can't get behind the average power metal vocalist.
Not that I think Rhapsody/Blind Gaurdian/Sonata Artica/Symphony X etc. are bad, they just aren't that exciting for me.

yeah, I totally hear ya-- but their complex guitar more than makes up for it-- they also have awesome bass-lines =)
(and jordan rudess has converted me to the belief that synth can be epic)
oh, and, the previous maiden songs I posted kinda pumped me up-- powerslave was so revolutionary of an album. Would power metal exist without it today? not sure...
if you do nothing else to learn about this genre, you need to at least listen to aces high and 2 minutes to midnight-- and remember, it was 1984.
Grew up with Nightwish and Sonata Arctica my entire teen period. Recently started listening to Sabaton as well, really good to listen to while you're gaming. Dreamtale are also pretty good, heard of them thanks to GSL.
It's definitely up there, but my personal favorite is She Is My Sin. Every time I play this song, I think of the second zerg mission in Starcraft 1. Had this song on demo (had just discovered Nightwish then) and played it and a few others on repeat constantly while playing.
Fall in love with your deep dark sin~~
Closely followed by Kinslayer.
Hot damn I love that entire album, but I can't really spam every single song here, so these two will have to do.

Lost Horizon - Highlander
Thank you very much! That song is most epic of all epic songs btw
Today, I am finally ashamed to be apart of TL, for 2 and a half pages of a power metal thread, and still no 3IOB.........WTF 3 Inches of Blood is SECOND TO NONE when it comes to powermetal. Observe.
And here's my symphonic offering. Adagio is as symphonic as Nightwish but as technical as Dream Theater, if not more technical at times. Their keyboard player is a monster.
I'm loving all of the Ensiferum, Wintersun and Therion love.

Yeah that starts at around 8:30. Though the highest note is at around 7:15. And then there's the crazy ending run at 10:35. Such an amazing song. My buddy and I are considering starting a cover band for this group but there is almost no chance of ever finding a singer who can do Daniel's lyrics. He simply has too much range. If you want to hear more of him, check out his work in Crystal Eyes and Heed. I'll dig up some Crystal Eyes. That band is awesome.
What I like about this thread is it is easy to define power metal and symphonic metal so we don't have to constantly deal with people bringing in crappy metalcore and and attempting to proclaim how metal they are.
I have always stuck by a rule for good metal bands and it almost always works (I can only think of 3 cases where it doesn't). This rule is that if the band is good either the band's name is 1-2 words, or no more than 5 syllables. Think of almost any good power metal band and this rule works, same with most good thrash bands, black metal, melodic death, etc. None of the crappy new American "metal" bands follow this rule.
its celtic/viking metal. but its AWESOME. I figured I would include it because it has a similar feel to some, its pretty melodic, but if you don't like growling vocals, its probably not your thing.

Great band. I haven't heard the new album yet or listened to them in a while. How different is it without Timo Tolkki? Speed of Light always starts playing in my head whenever anyone mentions them.
Anyway, here's Pyramaze, they're badass. Their old singer was really good and now they have Matt Barlow from Iced Earth and it works really well.
So this seems like the perfect place to ask this question. My friend who is a big metal fan neverlets me forget that there are around 100 different versions of Metal, and he tries to show me the difference but I just don't here it. Can someone please explain to me how they have manage to generate that many versions, and why they feel the need to have so many?

Metals been around for ages. Like almost any genre, people come up with different styles and evolutions and new bands come and copy them. I think it all becomes too convoluted at some point, but the same could be said for any genre labeling.
IMO, It really doesn't matter and you should just enjoy the music for what it is.
Wow I'm so happy a thread like this popped up! I'm a nut for symphonic metal so I'll def be checking out most of the postings here. Always been a fan of the songs that make you sound like you're on a journey. Love Symphony X and Adagio. The Odyssey is my absolute favorite song.

As metals been evolving the genres are becoming less sharply defined, you might find alot of debate about what genre a band fits in. A death metal band may borrow elements from power metal and vice-versa: heres are the main genres, however there are many subgenres that branch off from there.
Power Metal - Fantasy themes, high pitched vocals, high energy, glorious melodies eg; Blind Guardian, Wintersun, Dragonforce, Stratovarious, Demons and Wizards
Black Metal - Monotonous blast beats, Screeching vocals, Satanic Themes, Corpse paint makeup eg; Mayhem, Burzum, Gorgoroth, Celtic Frost
Death Metal - Heavy distortion, lots of palm muting, galloping riffs, Low gutteral vocals, Violent themes eg; Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Nile, Necrophagist
All the subgenres like 'Viking metal, Blackened Death Metal, Doom Metal, Slam Death etc" all basically branch off from these 3 main genres. Sure ensiferum technically would be called viking metal or battle metal or some shit, but really its just power metal with a few death metal elements. It didnt fit perfectly into the power metal box so people just made up a new genre.
As i spend my free time as much as i can with writing (composing) songs in this genre, as well as listening to bands of all kinds, i'd call myself a kind of expert in this genre.
However, i don't see a real connection between power metal and "symphonic metal". Nightwish as it was posted does definatly have power metal roots, but there is some symphonic metal that is far deeper than most of the metal songs posted before. I'm pointing to the songs that try to escape modern song structures and get closer to experimental music.
i'd like to post some videos without further commentating them (as it is my taste of music and i'm not here to diss anyone, lol)
HAGGARD - Upon Fallen Autumn Leaves
EPICA - Consign To Oblivion
EPICA - Kingdom Of Heaven
The last one is more of a doom/gothic metal band, but this song has classical influences (it's actually a musical excerpt wrapped with metal) so i'll post it anyways.
oh yeah, im a big fan of power metal. my favourite genre besides prog metal. nice to see 2 of my current favourite songs, ghost love score and the poet and the pendulum, linked on the first page. but there are some other nice songs and bands linked here that i didnt know about yet, so thanks for this thread. ^^
This seems to be a good place to ask this. As a power metal and folk/death metal fan I'm disappointed about the lack of female singers in the metal genre so I'm wondering if anyone have any tips? I know about the most popular ones like Nightwish and Within Temptation but does anyone have any others or a list of them?
The only requirement is that they sing "normally" and not like Arch Enemy for example and no male co-singer that screams like death metal bands does, Epica and some other bands have some good songs but virtually all of the ones I've found are "tainted" by male co-singer dudes that sings with the "puke voice"
i LOVE stratovarius and Helloween, (saw them live a month ago ^^ ) but i dont seem to lika any of the other "newer" power metal bands.. they all sound very similar, it seems as no one has gone beyond the sounds and structures created by tolkki , and also the ones from Helloween ( Weiki/Hansen )
most of this bands keep doing the most generic power metal songs in the universe..so generical that it seems POP to me truly, becouse of the little ammount of creatitivity , just grabbing the fomula someone else used and putting some lyrics over.. i saw Kamelot live (they played before Iron Maiden..) they r songs where SOOOO predictable, really obvious, not a single sound, or w/e you call it in music (progression??) i hadnt heard before..
Stratos 4 ever!!
few random strato songs.. (they are soo many good ones that if i put "the best" some will always be missing and ill get hate for it )
Also , i love the new strato albums , and also LOVE the "old" ones.. i like em both.. but this new tolkki band symphonia.. seems just another copy band.. hes just copying himself..its just stupid :/ .. some songs even have the same riffs.. as other strato songs.. theres even the same chours that he used in Soul of a vagabong--->Revolution renaissance --->In paradisium
i used to listen sonata arctica.. but meh i dont like they newer albums...some of their alder songs are good..

The Gathering for sure. Anneke van Giersbergen is an incredible singer.
Maybe a bit more heavy metal then power metal, but still AWESOME
[edit] Nearly forgot Aina (One time allstar band with people from kamelot, rhapsody, avantasia, deep purple, helloween and a couple more) The cd is a metal opera avantasia style, only better.

Sure bands like Ensiferum aren't technically power metal or super symphonic (They have their moments I suppose) but they are still badass and thus should be posted here. This thread should actually be titled "The GOOD Metal Thread". And with that more music!
This song is soooooooo good!! This stuff is more in the vein of Ensiferum.
And since people are posting Symphony X and other proggy stuff I'll post these too.
^ That band has ex-Kamelot singer Roy Khan, and guitarist Tore Ostby, who is a monster of a guitarist.
Hey, finally something I didnt know yet. I love that conception song. Its not kamelot, but its still cool Allso added some more bands to my list above. Didn't see anyone post: Demons & Wizards (Blind Guardian + Iced earth)
Seen many people post blind guardian. But imo Demons & Wizards is better.

Yeah I know now (I read that after I posted that but forgot to edit. I'd only listened to pre-Barlow Pyramaze before discovering Immortal recently), I've been kinda out of the loop for about a year and a half and even then I was always listening to music of the past, not anything super current. I took a hiatus from metal for around a year but recently got back into it after getting bored with electronic music. I burnt out on metal after listening to too much black metal so I'm going back to my roots, the stuff in this thread, 80's neoclassical shreddy stuff ala Jason Becker, NWOBHM, and thrash metal. I didn't even know KK Downing left Judas Priest until about a month ago . I'm kinda playing catch up right now with this thread combined with my 7000 odd songs on computer and it's great fun. In other words, I have no idea what the metal scene is right now, only that Nevermore released an album last year, Lost Horizon is preparing to release a new album and Wintersun's "Time" STILL isn't remotely close to being released.
Edit: Ihsahn released a new album?!?! I'll be back in a in like six hours, for now I must brew a pot of tea and listen to this thing in it's entirety a few times. It's the middle of the night but sleep can wait, I've been wondering when that album would come out (apparently early 2010? How many other awesome albums have I missed?)
Edit: Okay I just listened to the song with saxophone in it. Are we allowed to post prog metal in this thread, this is possibly the coolest use of saxophone I've heard, and as a sax player, I definitely want to try this.
Oh man, do I love symphonic and power metal. Definitely my favorite genres. I'm going to have to dedicate a day or two to go through all the songs in this thread.
I'd have to say that my favorites would be Iced Earth (Iced Earth holds a special place in my heart. They were the band that first got me into the genre), Blind Guardian, Symphony X, and Rhapsody of Fire.
It's not just the musical properties of the songs, but the lyrics as well. The songs are often able to tell an epic/awesome/different/entertaining story, and the music behind it is able to enhance the emotional delivery. I fucking love symphonic and power metal.

I'm just going to post every female-vocal metalband i know without male growling, I'm so bad at putting things in one basket. Here's a few more (that kinda fit in) though not necessarily power/folk/death metal but perhaps you like em anyways

Edit: Multiple songs with saxophone. Hnnnnggg
Post it, I wanne hear!
Haha here it is. It's faint at points but it adds a lot and is really cool sounding. It is essentially black metal-like prog metal with saxophone thrown in with synth lines and tastefully used 8-string. There are a few other songs on the album that feature saxophone but these are my two favourites. It is a really neat concept as the saxophone is such a versatile instrument that doesn't enough use outside of stereotypical situations (jazz, ska, etc)
And since this is a symphonic metal thread I throw in this song from Ihsahn's first solo albums, it's probably one of, if not, my favourite song of all time. This guy is a musical genius.
Edit: Also to the person who posted Warmen, you are a hero, that band is awesome. You're connection of Warmen being like an instrumental Stratovarius is dead on.
Here's Warmen with Stratovarius' singer, Timmo Kotipelto. He's done a couple songs with Warmen.
Can't forget the synphonic black metal. Great artists such as Dimmu Borgir
Bal sagoth are a band that are just a mixture of everything epic. (sickest lyrics)
Was gonna mention bands like wintersun and stratovarus and other power/synphonic bands but looks like many of the good ones have been already mentioned.
If you like symphonic and power metal you will probably like this (Turisas!)
Hahahahaha Turisas. That band is so hilarious! They're the Manowar of modern viking/battle metal. So awesome.
On the topic of symphonic black metal, here's Emperor's old synth player, Charmand Grimlock's band. A good word to describe this guy's music is strange. Kinda neat though, but only in short bursts.
And here's one of my favourite symphonic black metal bands. They later turned into a crazy avant garde band. The vocals in this song are played backwards in comparison to the rest of the track. It has the Twin Peaks effect in full force.
And you can't mention symphonic black metal with Emperor <3<3<3<3<3

i love every band that was posted here POWER METAL FOR LIFE ! ! this style of music is what i pride my self on when i play guitar took for ever to get the skill up to play half that shit but it was a fun long road and has made me a better at the guitar over all. it also makes it so i can show off to my friends ^^
Also, Elvenking is my faviourite band of all time, although most people (even folk/power metal fans) haven't heard of them
This is easily one of my favourite songs ever, never ever skip an elvenking song
I think I only like Kamelot, Elvenking, etc. because of their vocals, there used to be a time when I was into the growling and other incoherent sounds, but these days I can't understand why a person would prefer listening to that than say, Snow, by Kamelot, which has great lyrics and an amazing singer.
I just heard about this band yesterday. They're first 3 albums get great reviews and they're second album (The Hall of the Olden Dreams) has a rating of 97 on metal-archives.com which is the highest I've ever seen. From what I've heard it seems that they definitely deserve it. Check it out:
The curse of his powers tormented his life... Obeying the crown was a sinister price. His soul was tortured by love and by pain! He surely would flee but the oath made him stay.

Not much of a Power Metal kind of guy, but when I read the description in the OP about what it was -- it perfectly symbolized what Stream of Consciousness is, honestly.

There is overlap between the subgenres and fanbases, but Dream Theater is not an example of that. Really early Queensryche and Fates Warning would fit in this thread, but Dream Theater simply does not.

Well to go buy OP's definition, the song I linked has:
* Extremely long, pretentious guitar solos * Mixing of orchestral music and heavy metal (Church Organ, Grand Piano, etc.) * "Bombastic" sounds * Some suicidal speeds
Now every Dream Theater song does not fit into said category, of course -- but to classify every one of them as not even remotely fitting into those preset conditions is kind of silly.

Oh. My. Lawdy. I first discovered power/symph metal on Pandora many years ago when I was in 9th grade and had just started playing WoW. The fantasy lyrics combined with me getting huge into WoW lore/fantasy in general really clicked and I listened to pretty much every band that has been listed in this thread so far. Eventually though I met friends in high school that got me out of it and into hardcore/deathcore/grindcore, then eventually got into electronic music after high school.
Anyways, I don't think I could go back to the "core" music, but I can def see myself getting back into power metal after listening to some songs I used to love that were posted in this thread. Currently jamming to Ensiferum, actually. :>
I would like to revive this thread. We need to learn about some more power metal. I really like the band Keldian. They are not that known, but they are pretty awesome and are space power metal
I little embarrassed to admit only learning of power metal through my Dragonforce Pandora station, but I love this type of music!
Love the epic-ness that is Edguy's Theatre of Salvation Album, definitely recommend. (At my job in College I would blast Edguy and I got told to turn it off because one of the women there couldn't handle Tobias hitting his high notes haha)
Iced Earth is a pretty good band from the US. Helloween is always an awesome choice! Really enjoy Rhapsody of Fire and Dreamland as well!
Will have to post some songs when I get home from work! Let's keep this thread lively!!
I only discovered Xandria a few weeks back, but I'm really liking their style. The new vocalist Manuela Kraller is very reminiscent of Tarja from Nightwish, and in my opinion their latest album is on the level of Century Child/Once but with a little more metal. I've only really listened to their latest album so I can't really comment on their previous work with other vocalists, but I'll definitely have a look.
Most people joke about Manowar, but they're actually pretty fun:
Also, been listening to a lot of Symphony X lately. Michael Romeo is pretty good.
And this is by far my favourite. It's kinda proggy but still a sick song, though Symphony X is more of Power/Prog hybrid than anything. The base/synth line at 5:30 is spectacular.
