1. In the opening scene with Rick, Merle can see the gravity of what they are about to do and points it out to Rick: "You're awfully cold, officer friendly" 2. In the scene in the basement where Daryl told Merle "I just want my brother back," Merle looked emotional, like he realizes he's been dragging his brother down. 3. Michonne successfully makes the point to Merle that he's not a bad guy at heart ("A truly bad guy wouldn't have to say this", "How many have you killed before Woodbury", etc) and that he still has a chance to redeem himself. When Michonne asks Merle why he can't just go back, Merle actually hesitates.."I can't.. [pause] I can't just go back." I think they portrayed Merle's internal conflict quite well. I think it was beautifully played out...Merle looked pretty tormented for most of the episode, and showed some unusual cracks in his usual armor of douchebaggery. Now Rick's turnaround being pinned on a hallucination of Lori...that was a bit far-fetched, but I guess you can interpret that scene as Rick's better side (Lori was always telling him to do what he thought was right) winning over. Still a bit artificial, but meh, I've seen worse. | ||

Now he had an exchange with Herschel who fully accepted him as his son, and he proposed to Maggie. That's just the right amount of screen time to make his loss all the more painful. He'll probably die during an ill-prepared personal vendetta against the Governor. | ||

Honestly the whole "Omg the Gov touched my girlfriend!!" bit was so fucking overplayed. It really wasnt that big of a deal and I hope Glenn goes back to normal likable guy thats super useful, funny and charming. Same thing with Rick, his crazy eyes low talk dialogue is getting old. | ||
