Once you get past the initial shell of weirdness, a lot of their stuff is pretty catchy. yes!! one of my favorites. weird shit as well as the more traditional black metal of yesteryear. SMRC is probably my favorite, as it has elements of both, but Fas Ite... was the album that got me into them. they are well capable of making some utterly demented music. pretty damn unique and amazing IMO. then again, i'm pretty much a fanboy of just about anything released by NoEvDia or End All Life hehe. edit: also, i approve of that Death post. one of the best/most important bands ever...R.I.P. Thanks bros but WTF is lolicon and why am I into it? And 2 beers back to MOP for Skydancer *___* Edit: And 2 beers back for Death. Hehe. My fav album is Individual Thought Patterns, perfect blend of Tech/Prog and real death metal. DESULTORY

The thing with Meshuggah is, you either feel it or you don't. At least that's how I find it to be. They don't give a shit about norms and conventions and what's expected of a metal band or indeed a band in general, they just play what they sounds cool, they're definitely not writing the music that they are just because they're pretentious or hipsters or whatever, unlike some meatheads would have you believe. What's remarkable is how they manage to reinvent their craft on every new release while still sounding undeniably and unmistakably like Meshuggah. Their music is kinda hard to describe though, other than the fact that it relies on groovy riffs and atmosphere; Destroy Erase Improve is probably where you would want to start, it being a bit more conventional than later releases, some familiar thrash elements in it; then on Chaosphere they kick the experimentation up a notch, on Nothing they focus a lot more on heaviness and atmosphere; I and Catch Thirty-Three take one step further in terms of experimentation, then obZen is a tiny regress in that sense, instead offering something a tad more conventional and fast-paced; finally Koloss takes a simpler, catchier approach to grooves and atmosphere, while managing to remain every bit as interesting as their previous work. Don't get discouraged if you can't get into them, I've found that it can take quite a while before coming to appreciate their groove and overall sound. But if/when you do, it'll be awesome. Start with Destroy Erase Improve or Koloss imho.

Here is a fun vid where they play one of their newer songs, pretty good quality actually. I'll upload their EP 'Distortion of Senses' to DissolvedArts later today, then I'll show you the rest of their stuff. It's basically At the Gates on crack - beautiful music. SYNAPTIC - Malfunctional Minds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY8OvFTtZ_c Love this kind of stuff, thanks for the link!

It's called 'Vaya' by SYMBIONTIC, a band from Germany that should be dead by now. I used to know them when I was active myself, around a few corners. The music is so sick, I like to call it (and I think they called it that themselves) morbid melodic death metal. Just listen to it, and you will see what I mean. The vibes and melodies and riffs and licks are insane. I was highly drunk when I made that post :X Anyways go look up lolicon, like....wtf MOP......wtf. Also I think Individual Thought Patterns has grown to be my favorite Death album as well, with Symbolic being a very close 2nd. Chuck Schuldiner was a true genius.

Although I got to know Death via Symbolic, nowadays I'd have to say that it's their 'weakest' record (weak as in still better than 99% of death metal out there). The songs are just very straight forward and don't have as much depth and character as the other records. But again that's complaining on a pretty high level ; ) I have one more rare gem for you guys, I hope you appresh' :D This is CROMLECH, a band formed by one of the later EUCHARIST members. It's black-ish melodic death metal. Not as black as DISSECTION but still pretty dark end eerie. This is their best track, which actually didn't appear on one of their releases but on a V.A. Compilation. It's called 'My Entombement in the Desolate Sphere of Bereavement'. Enjoy it! PS: Goddamn I love this melodeath shit, hahahaa!
