Seeing pudge play, you might understand how his hook and rot works, hell, you might even realize how to do his combo... but that doesn't give you any real feel for him. You don't know how his item progression works, at what point in the game he feels powerful, how to shut him down in lane... all of this you learn extremely fast by playing him a few times and experiencing how he is to play. Why do you need a "real feel for him" if you don't actually play him though? Because everything else you will learn without playing him (yes including item progression). And this "real feel" won't come until at least 10 games anyway and then you're up to 1000 games if you're to play every hero equally much. So what I'm saying is, instead of learning tons of specifics regarding every hero, focus on a broader view and a general game sense and you'll get better much quicker. Of course you shouldn't let this stop you if you really like trying out new heroes every time.

Of course you shouldn't let this stop you if you really like trying out new heroes every time. Well, this feel can matter quite a bit. Let's say you play QoP every game and you meet an SF mid. After the game, you probably learned a bit about SF... he seems to be able to make shit explode on the ground at several ranges on a ridiculously low cooldown and he's always facing the target spot. Cool. His ulti seems to be a charge up and do a huge aoe, and for some reason, the player playing him seems to be insanely good at pulling it off just before he dies (eventually youll probably realize it's done automatically on death). As you're playing low MMR, you'll probably also learn that he is OP and 1v5s your whole team over and over. If you play him, you learn how insanely weak he is in the very start of the game and how ridiculously dependant he is on getting decent farm early, and you learn how important it is to be aggressive early and how hard you can shut him down if you're able to force him out of lane. You can learn all this from just playing against SF often enough as your QoP pick, but you'll learn it so much faster by being exposed to it by playing SF and feeling how hard it is to get last hits against a mid who realizes how to shut you down.

![]() By having a few heroes that you at least master somewhat, you always have something to relate to when looking at new heroes and how they work. You will have an earlier understanding of items and how they can benefit different heroes differently.

Learning those mechanics will help your play immensely! It's similar to never missing a depot and always keep building scvs in sc2.

DotA isn't exactly a simple game where you can wing it with any hero. You're most likely going to get demolished (I.E. "I'm going to try pudge this time!" - Dude I played with few games back) long story short: he got decimated like 2-9 early on. Morale of the story is: Getting steamrolled is generally not considered "fun", plus others will rage at you. You can learn other items and heroes by just playing and looking around the map paying attention. Up to you FreeZer.

Whenever I play against Io(wisp) the warpins seem to quite random. Sometimes it plays the warpin sound, other times it doesn't. Sometimes it shows the red circle on the map, other times it doesn't. Sometimes the red circle is visible even I don't have vision there. It all seems very random and is quite frustrating.

it always shows the red circle, if you didnt see it its because you missed it and the red circle is supposed to be visible on the mini map even if you dont have vision there.

1) do summoned creeps like invokers forge-spirits or visage's familiars give exp when they die? I think LD's bear does, but i'm not sure about the rest. 2) do they also give exp when they die because they are resummoned? 3) same question as 2) about ench's and chen's creeps. 4) how do gold and exp correlate for summonings? Same as neutrals? Per level?

When the creep expires (ench) or dies due to chen or a Helm of the dominator stealing another creep, no exp is granted. 4) Summons each have their own gold/exp values built in. For example, nature's prophet treants grant 20 XP. Charmed creeps (chen/ench etc) have the same values as the base creep that was charmed. EXP is a flat value, whereas gold is a range. Denies are flat-values for XP as well, but I don't know what they would be for summons. I'm sure its all on playdota somewhere.

Units flagged as summons give half exp. I'm sure its all on playdota somewhere. You can look at it all in the unit stats Also bounties are flat values plus dice rolls. Flat ranges work slightly different.

I get that "2d6" type rolls have an effect but lane creeps at least don't have multiple-die rolls.

I get that "2d6" type rolls have an effect but lane creeps at least don't have multiple-die rolls. I think that there is no difference, they just have an int bounty+dice as attribute and are keeping it uniform. But that's just an assumption based on the way i would code it.

Such as lasthitting/denying, checking minimap, always remember to carry a TP (and USE it in the right situations, such as your teammate on another lane gets towerdived), lane positioning, learning item progression depending on game situation, always do something with your hero if it's stacking/farming/pulling/map control/contesting runes (never just stand under your tower for 30 sec not knowing what to do). Learning those mechanics will help your play immensely! It's similar to never missing a depot and always keep building scvs in sc2. I agree. I can be considered a noob (ask anyone here who I've played with ) There are some heroes I enjoy playing with and am semi-ok with. But I /random some games as well, just because I enjoy trying out new heroes. Then I screw up Vengeful Spirit's ulti about 100 times. Or realize that last hitting with shadowfiend is fucking difficult and walking around with 10 souls all game is not fun. But live and learn. Go back to skillcasting with Ogre Magi, or ward trapping people with my shadow shaman for some games before /random'ing again and seeing what happens :D All the time, I keep trying to improve the basics, regardless of the hero I play. Map awareness (I suck at that), last hitting (I suck at that too) and lane control (I'm okayish at that).

If you kill a hero you always get XP, although I'm not sure if it is full if you aren't inside the radius.
