The first hotel wesg reserved backed out last minute, thus the complications

From just a quick glance: There are 2 Hilton hotels, a Marriott, a Ritz-Carlton and a Shangri-La in Haikou, all highly respected chains with very good average reviews on tripadvisor, so I very much doubt the accuracy of your statement.

Ticket selling and sponsors? They don't generally. ESL has the Facebook partnership which brings neat revenue apparently. Other than that, I think most rely on sponsorship money. In this event, I believe alibaba is the sponsor. That's why I believe tickets/compendiums/hats are a good avenue for organisers to earn revenue and develop a brand/theme etc. Unfortunately valve is greedy and takes too much of a cut for this. I think for now most tournaments are running at a loss, and they're just gambling for the scene to mature and capitalize on it.
