Does anybody know who the best bruiser in this game is? I tried Axe, but my first skill has too small range, so nobody ever attacks me, unless I sneak in from behind or through the trees. The items I got were two shields and trees. Also, should I still solo top?

Please don't try to apply LoL concepts to dota2, just doesn't work. The lanes aren't even symmetrical for one, so nobody knows what you are referring to when you say "solo top" without specifying the side. And no you should not.

The refraction bubble was only visible to enemies when it was still in the test client, last patch only her team mates can see it.

To help it's important to know what you're saying. Do you want someone tanky who does damage? Some strength semi-carries fill that role, like Night Stalker and Brewmaster. Do you want someone who just absorbs hurt but demands attention? Tidehunter and Axe are probably the ones who fill that role best.
If you're laning with Axe, you don't want to Solo with him. He doesn't need it and when you solo as a melee hero you need to have a farming spell (and axe really has to get in the thick of it to use his "farming" spell) like Rocket Flare (Clockwerk) or Ion Shell (Dark Seer).
Lanes in Dota are, as uriel wrote, asymetrical. For the Radiant, the bottom lane is generally considered to be safer - you're beside your own jungle and the creep meet closer to your tower. For the Dire, the Top lane is generally considered to be safer. Therefor, Dire bot and Radiant top are the "long" or "hard" or "suicide" lane.
It's also possible to jungle with Axe, but you need to practice this to do it well - you need to understand camp spawn timings, know which camps you can easily take down, understand stacking, and you need to be efficient.

Slark and Siren have the smallest collision sizes in the game at 8, everyone else has a collision size of 24.
edit: Terrorblade Metamorphosis has collision size of 22

You are supposed to be able to see the buff icon when you click her in dota 1, you can't do that now in dota 2. There was no visual bubble effect though in DotA 1 besides a small flash at the beginning.

That's like saying I tried to gank Crystal Maiden but died cause' a Lifestealer was inside her and I could have never known. A lot of things in DotA are pretty subtle and the game expects you to know things a lot of the time and when TA dives your tower, expect her Refraction to be up or ready.

Never could see them in DotA1 either. What I'm curious about is whether you could see the buff/debuff on her in DotA1 because they don't show now.
