It's a misplaced value because of other parts of their life lacking. That's how it was for me in university doing a program I didn't see any fulfillment in. I still get pissed about losing a match if my carry refuses to build BKB until he's six-slotted, but most of the time; I don't really care now. You're totally right. I think I was overcomplicating it. After thinking about it a little more, it seems like it couldn't be more simple. People don't want to make and admit their mistakes. The ones that succeed are the ones that do.That's why we watch guys like Jacky Mao sometimes and get infuriated. We see his ability and think that it's going to waste. It takes a while, and some experience, to realise that in time he will find his place. this is exactly why people think elo hell exists

People also put themselves in ELO hell. They try to emulate the pros and high level play and get bent out of shape when everyone isn't doing the same. They get so focused on playing "correctly", they forget the goal is to take the throne.
MMR is only a measurement of thrones taken vs thrones lost. It isn't your ability to play well, support or beat someone in a 1v1 duel. All that helps, but MMR doesn't measure that. Hence why 2GD is 5K. He takes throne more often than he doesn't.

On July 15 2014 23:26 Sn0_Man wrote: Does anybody else kinda wish valve played tiebreaker games for the 4-way 5th-8th tie after the group stages?
The reason I say that is this: Compare the tournament so far for two teams: Na'Vi and Titan. Both went 8-7 in the groups. Both proceeded to play NewBee in a Bo3 as their first games after the groups. And both lost (titan did better but that's immaterial). However, Na'Vi are in the lower bracket of the main event with $500,000 in the bank already whereas Titan are out with a tenth of that for THE EXACT SAME RESULT.
I think it's dumb. H2H is a bad tiebreaker for a few reasons, especially since Titan actually beat Na'Vi in their only actual match. Dumb Dumb Dumb.
Yeah I agree to an extent. H2H makes sense when you're looking at small controlled pools. If the pool was entirely Na'vi, Titan, Liquid, C9 then looking at the H2H results would make a lot of sense. When it's part of a 16 person pool though it's a bit silly because too much of it depends on other teams that aren't part of the pool.
If Fnatic hadn't beaten Cloud9 as part of their final game then 6th-8th would have been a 1-1-1 tie that would mean Liquid, Na'vi, or Titan would have all been equal in their chance to advance. So C9 tieing with Liquid and Titan was WORSE for Liquid/Titan than if C9 had beaten them in record. That's sort of ridiculous.
I mean sure the tournament is filled with all sorts of "if x beat y" situations, but it's sort of crazy that teams would be better off having a worse record compared to a team rather than tied with them. C9 being in the same spot in either case shouldn't affect another team's chances to advance, but because they got 6th with 8-7 rather than 9-6 Titan and Liquid suffer.

@Comeh sure dude @Logo xactly. H2H is just bad. And personally, I'm much happier with titan out na'vi advancing but that doesn't mean I think it's fair.

Did those plans for a meetup on Thursday ever pan out and I missed it or is it just not happening?
|
Well I'm driving thursday so I certainly wouldn't be there. Meetups should happen some day after the games IMO lol. I'd assume most people ain't got anything better to do in seattle
I know PassiveAce is planning on attending and interested in meeting/grabbing a drink with TLers (LDers?)

Think elo hell is more complicated than that. If you're listening to and getting caught up with downers, your play will worsen too. If you go on a smurf and mute everybody, you'll play better like 90% of the time.
I'm not sure if Valve's mute system is correct for that reason. I'd be curious if the reddit-style shadowban (ie. time out) would be more effective.
As far as tiebreakers go, you've gotta remember that everything in this TI is put under a massive magnifying glass thanks to the community backing. Yeah, the format is imperfect given the stakes, but that's basically on the community. Throw up a reddit thread and give Valve time and they will do their best to fix it. If they fail, the absurd growth will slow or stop. Doesn't seem like a massive deal to me.

ELO hell is a state of mind. Once you convince yourself to get out of it, suddenly you are.

I think it was strange that they did the tiebreakers for some placements, but not for others. For example, the difference between top6 and top10 after the groupstage is much bigger than even top2 and top6. Top2 has 640k guaranteed, top 6 has 500k guaranted and top10 has 50k guaranteed. But tiebreakers would've been played out for top2, but not for top6. I mean, I'm glad it played out this way, because it put Na'Vi and C9 (both of which I really like) in the top 6, but I think it was a strange decision.

I'd be down either way I'm not cool enough to go to the event but I'd stop by and get some drinks after.

@kirsed u live in seattle and aren't attending? o.o I agree, I think you could throw up that exact point as a reddit thread after TI and see where it goes.
