I love it how the PoE players always highjack d3 threads Come on guys, if it's sooooo good, why you spend your time on d3 forums (not only this one) trying to convert people. We've understood that you have the biggest skill tree in fuckin history but the game is only fun when you choose attack speed!
Id seriously advise you to play hardcore self found. or at least hardcore. You may think it makes no difference, but the truth is, between the adrenalin rushes you get each time your screen goes red and an(kinda)well working aunction house, its a completely different experience. There is also an active community on TL here:
I played sorc until 1.02, then started speculating on AH. After 1.04 it became less profitable and I quit for like 4 months. Then I returned to play a barb just to slaughter some monsters. By that time I forgot everything and was just enjoying the game in the old D2-style. I was intrigued by the hellfire ring (2 months after it came out lol) and started farming it. Then I found out that barbs were actually OPed and started doing Alkaizer runs, which are damn fun as a barb! I have a couple of friends that were doing it also with other classes and I immensely enjoyed getting way ahead of them while spending very little time playing.
About 2 weeks ago I discovered hardcore. That's where the real fun began.

yeah I have the same motivation way back.. but investing say 4-5hrs a day and looting nothing valuable really made me frustrated.
my past motivations include finding uber rare/legendary item - problem now is looking for a party - all my friends quit lol

I am just interested with other people's motivation and also try to check other options. Well yes thats what im doing for the past months - not playing it but i am trying to find out other ways and other points of view and maybe love the game again.

Yeah that was one of my goals before, but after seeing a decline numbers in players I really don't see the benefit if I found one. Are you still able to sell one?
On February 08 2013 06:29 Frankenberry wrote: Play Hardcore only or Path of the Exile =)
Or try something original, like melee demon hunter or something silly.
Believe me it crossed my mind as well lol ^^ I just hate it why bows are not working with my barb
The odds of finding an item to sell for $200+ are incredibly low, although still possible imo.
For D3 - playing hardcore with self bound limitations such as not using whatever is "the" best build for whichever class you are playing. Either that or slot machine mentality and hope you get lucky to find said item.
As others have said, checking out PoE is worthwhile IMO, the combat doesn't feel as good as D3 but the game is worth checking out just for Lunaris Temple lvl 3, the kind of atmosphere there sets a bar for environments that D3 hasn't even come close to accomplishing
All the rabid PoE fandom (looking at you Anomaly) aside, there's no way D3 is even remotely close to the addiction level of WoW. For one the late game/long time motivation factor is lower by far but most importantly D3 (and Sc2 for that matter) has close to zero social interaction. Players always come back to WoW because of the friends they made over the years. There's nothing like that for D3- Hurray for Bnet 2.0 .
edit: D3 is definetly "killable" compared to WoW is what I'm saying I guess. OT: When it comes to motivation you just gotta know what kind of player you are: Personally I find that I always have a hard time to do repetitive tasks (grinding/farming what have you) in any game but a lot of my friends enjoy some "mindless" farming after the days work, it helps them relax. So if you're looking for something new/ exiting you're unlikely to find that in D3, if you're motivated by other factors (like some of your fellow posters in here) sticking with D3 might be a decent idea.
Yea, finding that nearly-perfect item to sell for 200+ seems less and less likely, but still possible! I mostly spend my time flipping stuff on both AHs, makes a lot more profit than farming ever did for me, but farming has the tiny paragon carrot of xp that is some measurable amount of character progression now that I have no upgrade paths left on my SC monk (not that my gear is anywhere near good, just nearly the perfect set for the build/mp I run) And my 60 HC Monk is stuck in terms of upgrades as well! No motivation to farm or flip and any direct upgrade either doesn't exist on AH or way out of my 10m budget ;D
As for all the people saying "I only found good drops my first 20 paragon levels"... you do realize there are probably a million or so other players leveling at the same rate and increasing their MF at the same rate, so that 50m item you sold at Plvl 20 is probably only worth 20m if you found the exact item at plvl 50. I've found maybe 10 of the Grand Vizier MF/GF staff adn they used to sell for 30m, then 15, then 10, then 5, then down to 150k now. Completely terrible rolls, but the market gets saturated. It's not that the drops are getting worse, they are just accumulating and never getting removed from the game. The only way items would increase in value is if the items were "consumed".. like they are in Hardcore, which is why a lot of people like the AH there.
So motivation currently involves waiting for patch 1.07 coming so I can "cash out" all my crafting, gold, etc when the demand ticks up in SC. And then craft some upgrades for my HC Monk!

Soooooooooooooo you hijack d3 threads instead of being constructive on any other PoE. Admit it, your bored, but too proud to come back <3
Going around cleaving @20 fps must get boring I understand

I'm not hijacking anything, just spreading the arpg awesomeness that is PoE. I find it far superior to D3, which many other players found disappointing, so I imagine I'd be doing gamers a favor by recommending them such an awesome game. And yes I AM bored, work is slow.
I dunno what you mean by cleaving at 20 fps....here are just two examples of the craziness you can come up with in PoE

Very true words.
So basically, if you want to make money you really need to constantly play the game to utilise the high prices to your advantage. If you just want to have some fun and afford good gear then it is actually preferable to wait a while after a patch/ update.

Yeah, I agree. So it is still possible to make money from flipping? Maybe should try that instead.
Regarding prices, I was almost a bit disappointed to see that my lacunis with 5.5 cc (whic was one of my good drops early on) was at essentially the same price as when I found them. Maybe down from 70M to 60M, but barely that. The rare ring though (which was my other big drop) had fallen a lot in price. So some things lose value faster than others it seems.

Ya I totally agree with all the D3 critics when it comes to playing Softcore. There is absolutely no challenge. It's just a mindless grind that requires no skill. You are guaranteed to beat the game, guaranteed to get paragon level 100, as long as you put in the time. There is no accomplishment in Softcore.
Play Hardcore, and see how that changes things for you. I can't believe how much more fun I have playing HC in D3, I couldn't ever imagine playing Softcore ever again. It's like a whole new world in HC, 100000000x more fun / challenging / exciting / satisfying.

I don't really see how HC is considered a "challenge". The nature of mistakes are still the same, the skills needed to avoid the mistakes are still the same, it's just the punishment is different. I would say that the grind factor of HC is even higher than SC, since you play more safe and have to overlevel yourself by grinding before moving on to the next zone. Fun? Yes, since the adrenaline rush of constantly having 1 life with no save points is pretty awesome. Challenging? Not really, since both modes offer exactly the same gameplay with the same mechanics.

How is it not a challenge? Prolly 90% of created characters don't reach level 60, a I guarantee less than 1% make to Paragon 50. That means its a challenge... and gives you a sense of accomplishment if you are able to do it, which makes the leveling actually mean something.
In softcore its just "oh you hit paragon 100, musta played a lot congrats" but in hardcore its "DAMN good job" cuz it means you navigated like 250 hours of gameplay without something stupid happening and played smart.
If less than 1% of characters make it to paragon 50, I can't see how u don't think that means it's hard / a challenge.

HC is just playing slower and more careful. Thats not what D3 should be about. I play D3 because I want to play something casually - I don't want to be 100% concentrated while playing - thats why I don't play HC.
