Surprised to have not seen this, but I caught a glimpse of this surfing the MLG site after reading the interview with IdrA and thought I should post it here. I think it's a personal sponsorship, not sure how it works with Team Liquid being sponsor by The Little App Factory, but here is the press release.
We recently introduced Sony Ericsson as a new sponsor of MLG for 2011, and their newest Android smartphone, the Xperia™ PLAY, as the official mobile handset of MLG.
Today, we’re pleased to also announce that Sony Ericsson will be sponsoring two of the biggest names in the worlds of Halo: Reach and StarCraft 2. Tsquared of Instinct and TLO of Team Liquid have both been selected to represent Sony Ericsson and the Xperia™ PLAY during the 2011 Pro Circuit Season. Congratulations to both players!
Be sure to stop by the all-new Sony Ericsson booth at each of the 2011 Pro Circuit Live Competitions to meet the guys and check out the Xperia™ PLAY: the world’s first PlayStation Certified smartphone with the apps you need and the games you want.

Not about winning but about getting people to want to watch you!!
Great news for TLO.

Epic but weird. Didn't TLO stop with diehard SC2?
|
I'm going to assume everything was talked about before hand with TLO/Liquid/TLAF but thats awesome for TLO, congrats.
|
So I assume that means that TLO will be at all of the MLG events on Sony's bill? If so, I'm even more hyped for MLG Dallas!
|
SE.TLAF.Liquid'TLO for the win! I hope thats ok with his current sponsers. Good for him though, thats a huge deal.
|
Cool! I think we can all agree that TLO is awesome. Grats on the extra sponsorship!
|
Glad I bought a Sony Ericsson cell phone

They probably choose TLO because he's such a nice guy and has a huge fanbase, definitely someone you would want to represent you because it's so hard to hate him. And even if he hasn't been successful lately, he has so much talent that he's going to play well again. Can't wait for his TSL3 match again Nada !
|
Smart move, TLO is probably one of the - if not the - most loved SC2 players to date. :O

congrats! I REALLY wanna try out the SE tablets at the MLG !!

Fewer flight tickets for TLAF to pay is nice, I guess Congrats TLO.

TLO understands showmanship like Boxer and is a great, likeable guy like Nony. He deserves it.
|
This says even more than some of you might realize. From what I remember of my dabbling in FPS pro news, Tsquared is a massive name. This is essentially a recognition of TLO as the "best" player by Sony Ericsson considering that they're pairing him with Tsquared as a FPS/RTS combo. That's quite the declaration.
Of course, I love TLO and think he's awesome, so I'm cool with that, haha. I certainly wouldn't say he's number one going into this (and I honestly don't think anyone would), but he's definitely a threat to everyone there.

You need to do a marketing course - it's got nothing to do with being the best; and has everything to do with who attracts the most attention; usually those 2 seem to coincide, but in this case i don't think anyone would say TLO is "the best" at the moment (he is most certainly a top player) but he has always been a fan favourite that everyone comes out to see.. He gets great exposure, plain and simple..
|
so the stopped sponsoring GSL to sponsor TLO? sure why not good for him! though theyre might of been more deserving playing out there maybe
|
So Boxer was right.
In order to be successful, you have to have both the skill and most importantly the ability to use that skill to entertain the fans. If you achieve that, you will gather attention, which will attract personal sponsorships and lead to a successful career.
I am pretty sure he said that in his past interviews, including the TSL pre-game interview.
Say what you want about Boxer's skill level, but the man remains as the one and only who transcended the game itself and became something larger than the game that he plays.

I'm glad TLO is getting support on the MLG forums too! Gogo TLO

Love it. Keep in mind that if Sony sponsors TLO's trips and accomodation for all MLG events, this loosens up a couple of thousand bucks in Liquid'TLAF's budget that they can now spend on travel costs for even more events!

lol...
I mean I liked him in the beta, but..
.. really? TLO, out of all the SC2 pro players out there? =/

Grats TLO this is pretty awesome ^^

i wouldve sponsored IdrA that guy moved from KOREA to play sc2 in usa(giving up a very sought out for CodeS spot) if that doesnt show dedication to home country and esports i dont know what does

Ah, this must one of the reasons that he chose to go to MLG instead of try for the GSL World Champions.
It's pretty cool, as someone who's followed MLG pretty much since its inception, to have TLO up next to Tsquared. Tsquared was like their first big star in halo, he had the biggest contract when MLG started doing those, so on and so forth. This is just another sign that MLG is really giving SC2 some major love, hope the fans can step up and reciprocate it!

I wonder if other members of TL are jelly? hahahahaahahahah jk.

This is great news. It's about time TLO got serious. And to add, do you think Liquid needs those cool jackets that all korean teams wear? Would be awesome to see TLO with sponsor logos all over him.

it doesn't really, it shows IdrA is really smart and realises there's more money to be made by winning "easier" tournaments. Anyway I'll stop derailing this thread now.
Grats to TLO, without a doubt a great entertainer, TLO draws the crowd that's what Sony wants to promote their stuff, there's few who fit that slot besides TLO.

He is the most popular player in the world. His game against HyperDub is still on the most viewed on Gomtv

Easily the best personality in e-sports to sponsor, congrats!

Why do so many people dismiss TLO as a player? He's really, really good - and apart from the time that he was having serious trouble with carpal tunnel, he's been really succesful (winning the pokeridol and qualifying for the TSL). There seems to be such an obsession with playing a style that's considered 'standard' that anyone who sometimes does other styles gets dismissed as a player, no matter how skilled.
|
Makes a lot of sense. Known in KR from GSL, NA from TL, and he's from EU. He speaks really well, is consistently funny and good mannered, and speaks German & English. He's a marketer's ideal candidate.

He is still the most popular play afaik, but by far not the best. So Sony Ericsson is saying that TLO is the most popular player as far as they know.
Also I think many people are missing that TLO was the number ONE OR TWO foreigner at the time of GSL 1 and 2 with IdrA, and the only reason he fell off the map was not because of a slump, but a medical condition

IIRC he would have been in Code A whether he qualified for GSL3 or not. In fact had he qualified for GSL3 he may have been in code S. I'd have to go back to his numbers and look. I'm 99% positive him and idra lost in the same rounds (ro64 in GSL 1 or 2 and then a ro32 in the other GSL), and idra had the extra ro32 finish to put him into code S.
Also on topic gogo TLO <33
EDIT: nvm wrong about his finishes but right about his points. He would have been in Code A either way (according to the liquipedia page)

I wonder why people hate on the ONLY player who had medical (read: carpel tunnel + bout with chicken box) issues in his career that significantly reduces his performance. It's like, saying to someone "why don't you run at full speed" after they mildly strained a quad earlier in a football game.
TLO is hugely entertaining to watch and on top he's a really good face for the game. He's insightful, successful (why else is he in TSL) and eloquent, I can hardly imagine anyone else that brings the entire package he possesses.

His slump after season 1 was due to carpal tunnel, but he was still placed 5th in dallas (top ranked zerg). He qualified for TSL recently which is definitely a feat. He still would have had to fight for his spot if he got ro64, the 32nd player had those exact same stats, therefore he would not have been guaranteed code s, trust me it's true.

I'm the exact opposite. I thought he was creative but way way overrated in the beta. Now he's become a lot more solid and is a nice representative of international e-sports.

GRATZ TLO! You're awesome man, easily one of the most enjoyable players to watch in the scene and always delivers a show, thank you man for playing this game and keep on ownin! =D

Basically yes. As someone else who's also followed MLG for ages, it's quite a statement by MLG to find an individual sponsorship for an SC2 player along with someone like Tsquared (although I think Walshy and the Ogre twins might have something to say about the "first big star in Halo" assertion :D). TLO has broad appeal, a huge following, and is a top foreigner player -- it's easy to see why Sony Ericsson went with him. Congrats TLO! :D t2 in ins makes me lol still haha. I agree with this too though, TLO and t2 getting a sponsorship together is kinda big. gogo tlo Dude, tell me about it. T2 = Str8 to me...never thought he'd team up with Roybox. Only thing that'd be weirder is if he got on FB somehow. I can't ever see that happening though :D It could happen because Halo pro 4s=tons of immaturity, no team loyalty, and a lot of backstabbing.
Anyway, gratz to TLO, hope MLG does a lot more of these (like they help get other pros individual sponsorships through corporate networking or whatever)

Why do so many people dismiss TLO as a player? He's really, really good - and apart from the time that he was having serious trouble with carpal tunnel, he's been really succesful (winning the pokeridol and qualifying for the TSL). There seems to be such an obsession with playing a style that's considered 'standard' that anyone who sometimes does other styles gets dismissed as a player, no matter how skilled. lol his playstyle? I dont even know his playstyle.. I stopped watching him after the beta. I mean during that, sure he was exciting as hell. Loved looking up youtube vids of him etc. But after that... never saw him place well in major tournaments. =/ So I just stopped following him, started following other players instead. JUST saying. How can you quote someone who explains some of his achievements to you ( qualifying as pointleader for TSL, pokeridol win) and answer to that that you never saw him place well in tournaments?? Besides, before he left Korea he was as succesful as Idra in GSL and the Koreans's dear. With his two ro32 appearences he would have gotten got S, you know... Actually he had one ro32 and one ro64, so definitely not code S, he would have needed ro16 or ro32 in s3, and his play seemed to be going downhill after season 1. He only needed a ro64 to be in Code S. ro64+ro64+ro32=code S (i don't know how this make sense, but trust me it is true.) His slump after season 1 was due to carpal tunnel, but he was still placed 5th in dallas (top ranked zerg). He qualified for TSL recently which is definitely a feat. I hope TLO can do even better this year, and also STICK TO A RACE! He still would have had to fight for his spot if he got ro64, the 32nd player had those exact same stats, therefore he would not have been guaranteed code s, trust me it's true. But remember one of TLO's opponents (had TLO been in ro64) for code S spot will be legal mind, who is the worst player ever, currently in code B.

I don't think many do hate TLO, just think his gimmicky play style isn't going to get him far. In my opinion he did well earlier on because people didn't have near the knowledge of the game and he came up with a lot of interesting builds. As time goes on, this style becomes less effective. He must know this and thats why hes changing into more macro oriented. I'm all for TLO doing well, he provides interesting games, but I would rather cheer for someone who can provide results. I am more consistently disappointed in his games than the other way around.

just that he's not as exciting to watch as he was in the beta, when he pwned everybody doing crazy stuff like colossi drops. now its more like... standard play. and even then, he's not the best at it =/

While I appreciate your slight on my abilities, it doesn't change what it looks like. As someone else said, Tsquared was probably the best in 2008 but not really currently, so it's not the "best of the best," but it is certainly pointing out one player above all the others as a type of "favorite" (and, indeed, we'd all call TLO a fan favorite, correct?).
I also put that TLO wasn't the best, so maybe you didn't read my post thoroughly enough -- I thought that putting that helped to clarify what I meant. I acknowledged the exposure thing but was pointing out the type of association it was making. The Average Joe is more likely to see it as "TLO is totally awesome and kicks so many peoples' asses!" rather than "hmm, I guess he was just the best person to choose based on audience appeal."
If you still fear for my marketing credentials, you'll be relieved to know that I've written up marketing plans for a franchisee opening his third branch of an international restaurant chain and am currently fielding interviews from several marketing firms. I like to think I know at least the basics, you know?

I look forward to seeing a few new patches on TLO's TL shirt. Heck, you can't even spell TLO without spelling TL. That's how important he is to the TL community with his amazingly creative play even this far into the game's release.
He is a great player, caster, and person. I look forward to seeing the first white, Random bonjwa tear his way through MLG.

TLO is a cool person of the starcraft community. He deserves it, i hope his play will get super ace again.

would be happier if TLO take the game more serious.

So is he a part of Teamliquid or is not? Is there an official statement from TL and TLAF?

Great news for TLO and how will this clash with the little app factory? They are not in the same market hence they are not competitors so there isnt really a problem, not really rocket science to figure that out.

Very cool, congratulations!

TLO might not be the best player when you look at his old form (not sure about his current form after he's gotten over his injury), but he's definitely one of the most popular ones. Still hoping for him to go random. ^^

Great news for TLO. I am looking forward to watch his game against NaDa. He really has the chances to win. He seems to be healthier. How is his arm doing?
I think it's because he has a huge fanbase. And even if he doesnt win all the tournaments, he is doing well and a lot of people love to watch his games.

Does the sponsorship mean that only his flights/hotel costs and so forth will be paid or does he also receive a salary? Anyway I think this is quite good for TLAF-TL as it prevents that their travel expenses won`t be out of proportion. I also think that if TLO now sticks to Terran for a while his game will be solidified and he will be a strong competitor.
|
Neither of these guys seem to be that successful lol, but props for the epic sponsorship I guess.
|
TLO sure is a handsome and good to market guy but i would wish he showed some more constant play. Maybe he really should decide for a race. Anyways im verry happy for him to have such a great deal!
@Irrationla_Animal, i guess he wont get a salary, because he has his contract with TL about monthly salary or whatever. Only if he would make active advertising for sony (for example ads for streams praising new stuff) he would get paid directly. But who knows :D
|
Love this guy, if there was a Zorkmid Inc. I'd be trying my damnedest to get my Logo on TLO.

This is indeed surprising seeing is how TLO hasn't been in the spotlight nearly as much compared to the first three months of launch. I am very happy for him though, and Sony Ericsson made a good choice since this german has captured so many of our hearts :x.

TLO is going big time! Now all he needs is super model girlfriend and a visit from MTV cribs to show-off his fleet of cars. (all kidding aside)
Congratulations TLO on your commercial success. TLO Fighting!

A highly popular SCII player known for his creativity.
Well mannered, has good on-screen charisma. Not the greatest, but he definitely carries a personality on him even without needing to speak.
Say what you want about him, he's a respectable high-tier level SCII player, even now. Sure, he doesn't feel as invincible as when Idra and him were the only real GSL challengers and how he was literally the (f)ace of Team Liquid at one point, but he's still darn darn great.
A darn great player who are definitely in the top 20-30 of non-Koreans, imo. And he plays random.
Uses nukes.
Honestly, despite his lack of winning success, he's one of the few players who had really cemented his presence and quality as a SCII pro. With personality, skill, entertainment value, fanbase, etc.
I think his Korean nickname, Nostradario is really reflective of the kind of player and person TLO is. The name Nostradario reminds me of a Maestro, and that is pretty much how I think TLO plays.
A maestro who captivates. Nostradario. The Little One.
Definitely deserving of a personal sponsorship.
|
This is so well deserved. A super solid random player and he seems like such a nice guy.
|
TLO would be a great person to sponsor, he is extremely nice and one of the most creative players.
|
Is there a conflict between the sponsors? i mean, TLAF is an iOS Developer, and now TLO is getting sponsored by a direct competitor to the iphone.
is TLO still going to be a liquid sponsored player after this?
|
Hah! You go TLO, just start winning some big tournaments, or keep playing with your amazing playstyle, either way, you deserve this!
|
For the people not understanding the negativity, i think it is mostly because tlo is awesome hnas has awesome sponsors already, while other player/teams as awesome as tlo do not have any real sponsors at all.
But well its hardly tlo´s fault so gratz =)
|
if TLO played hard and commited to Terran he would be right up there imo
|
TLO hasn't won anything. He's yet to prove himself. Congratz on the $$$$. But I'd rather see you win.

I like TLO. I want to see him win. He never wins. I feel its hard to support TLO by his lack of performance.
He is one of the around 20-30 persons (maybe even less) to have won an international LAN event (Pokeridol which had 5000 Pound Prizepool).

Win what? Tournaments? He won Pokeridol. Win matches? His 151 points in the TSL qualifiers proved that he has no problem winning matches.
He is a nice guy with a creative playstyle who has chosen to play the hardest race, that is why he is so likeable. If you only want to support players who win 100% of their matches then you will probably find it hard supporting anyone.

:O so awesome grats tlo <3<3
|
Grats to TLO.
I don't understand the hate..... Be glad for someone when good things happen to them
|
Not a surprise, the guy's a fan favourite and really earned his following. :D
TLO fighting!
|
Go TLO! That's a huge sponsorship, it's nice to see a player with a really creative playstyle getting sponsored. Easily one of the most fun players to watch

lol, owned... though to be honest I think this was just a misunderstanding.
as someone else said, TLO attracks people to watch the game, after all that is why people/teams get sponsors, cause they expose the sponsor to the public that want to see him/them playing.
good for TLO!!! I want to see his games =)...

Lol what?
Anyways, glad to head TLO will be at MLG events. Way to go Sony.

What I find odd is they sponsored T2 when hes also sponsored by Dr Pepper that guy must be rolling in it atm.

You were only telling the truth DKIM I don't care WHAT Team liquid thinks. We all knew you love TLO and wouldn't mean anything harmful by it. But you don't see TLO winning as much as Jinro or Idra now do you? Who ever took you serious about the hustling bit is retarded and also believes that violent video games make a bigger impression on children than parental discipline. -.-?
Getting a little communist there TL.

Gotta lobe companies who support esports! Gotta love TLO!
|
TSquared doesn't win that many events any more. I haven't watched any Reach but his teams sucked last year at Halo 3 (by pro standards). But he's an icon in Halo 3, mainly on account of his personality.
Hwaseung Oz are no KT or T1 right now but the players are still on T.V. advertising backpacks.
That's not what it's about. It's because TLO is probably the most exciting player to watch in competitive Starcraft 2, probably only second to on-form Boxer.
|
I remember Heosat saying somewhere (on Reddit, I think) that TLAF's sponsorship of Team Liquid initially came out of a proposal to sponsor TLO alone. Say what you will about his polish and his tournament results, but in terms of being a respectable big-name entertainer who brings in the sponsorships, comparisons to Boxer are not unjustified.
|
That's pretty awesome. Grats to Dario, hope this gives him the confidence/peace of mind/whatever he needs to smash some MLGs!
I like SE's involvement in SC2 and e-sports in general btw. Is this new or was I just not aware pre-GSL?
|
|
Cool but TLO is still on liquid isnt he? I dunno seems weird to be representing your teams sponsors as well as your own.

This. If you guys think getting sponsorship has anything to do with skill and amount of practice you are naive

That, alot of the Halo crowd have Personal sponsors. T2, Enable, Walshy but still retain their team sponsors. They pretty much just have to put extra stuff on their jerseys do events for the companies that sponsor them and get free stuff. Like Walshy gets free Crates of Red Bull.

Great for TLO! Looking forward to him throwing some punishment in tourneys with mayhaps more motivation :D

TLO is such a fun player to watch, he definitely deserves this ^^

IdrA is also fully sponsored as a member of Team EG, and Sony is a competitor with at least one of EG's sponsors in MSi so it wouldn't make any sense ;p Congrats TLO!

Congrats, TLO. Can't wait to see some more "TLO arm spazm-muscles-like-movement" at Dallas!
|
yay nice sponsorship TLO! hope to see u moaaaaaar streaming soon
and damn, ur quite often in Stockholm these days... TL house comin' ? That would be.... quite nice, to say the least ^^

vnice TLO. Fan support brings big sponsors :D You deserve it.

People like you disgust me. You are just like the those people IRL who doesnt support their fotball team unless they are winning.. If you cant support a player even when times are rough dont call yourself a supporter.
And on topic; TLO is a likeable guy and a fan favorit, ofc he is being chosen as a whom gets the sponsorship. And he deserves it too, he much like BoxeR knows that entertainment is just as important as skill or results, I mean if I had to get a friend into SC2 and I could only show 1 game i'd sure as hell show a TLO game.
Point being haters gonna hate, and for no reason. TLO Fighting!

tlo and tsquared have the biggest fanboy clubs so it makes sense.
|
Tsquared is the richest professional gamer outside of korea, in fact, he might be close to richest.
This is amazing news that Sony Ericsson would personally sponsor one player!

TLO is the only random player (Day9 aside, but he's not really a pro) I know who doesn't just rely on cheese, or even on ultrastandard builds and timing pushes. When combined with his creativity, this makes him one of the most consistently fun players to watch. When I watch MKP, MVP, MC, Nestea, or even Jinro, I more or less know what sort of game to expect. Not true with TLO.
|
|
woo TLO! nice to see e sports growing really fast as the years roll by.
|
TLO is a baller. I'm surprised that companies has been this slow to realize what a fan favorite he is - no matter if he gets 2-0'ed as with the IEM showmatch.
I'm sure that SE will get their sponsorship back in publicity thousandfold.
|
<3 Dario, that's awesome news
|
And yet my mother still doesn't believe that pro gaming can get you cash. LOL. Congrats to TLO :D I bet TLO vs NaDa will be epic.
I support NaDa though. The Genius Terran lives on :D

Lol my thoughts exactly. He's an exciting player and seems like a top bloke so I guess he's a prime candidate for sponsorship. Hope he wins more big stuff though.

No matter what happens to players like TLO or KiwiKaki (win or lose) I feel they will always have a big following, including myself, because of how entertaining they are in terms of game play. =D

Did you know his sponsor also sponsors a big professional tennis tournament? It's going on right now. The Sony Ericsson Open. No joke.
