Hello,
The GSL Tour in 2011 is divided into Code S and Code A As open seasons are over, those of you who have not yet acquired Code S and Code A need to participate in Code A preliminary in order to compete in GSL. Note the following.
Code S : Top 32 players in the league. Code A : Next best 32 players. Code B : Top ladder players who are given the right to play in Code A preliminary. Interchange between Code A and Code S = Up & Down match Interchange between Code A and Code B = Code A Preliminary
Code A Preliminary Registration Date : January 17th 00:00(KST) ~ January 22nd 24:00(KST) Code A Preliminary Date : January 30th(Sunday) Location : TechnoMart, Sindorim, Seoul, Korea Format : Full tournament, best of 3 Maps : 1st set : Xel`Naga Caverns / 2nd set : Metalopolis / 3rd set : Scrap Station
We want as many foreign players participating in GSL as possible. However, in previous season we noted that many players had difficulty finding place to stay, and therefore we are providing team house from this season. At the moment the players can only sleep at the house but once we have 4 seeded foreigners invited we will also provide computers to practice(The exact date of when the PCs will be available is undecided) Note that the team house can only hold up to 8~10 people. If you wish to stay at the team house, you need to send a) copy of your passport b) your ladder ranking to gsl@gomtv.com People with the highest ladder ranking will be accepted to the house. Make sure you send them after the registration begins(Jan 17th 00:00). If you send them before appointed date and time it will not be accepted. Thank You

Fantastic stuff guys. Great to see this!
Very cool stuff. GOM being awesome
Gom provides room and board at no cost?
Hope to see team EG in the running real soon
Wow, very awesome for GOM to be providing housing! I love how much you guys are doing to make this a truly global gaming event
GOM is doing some great stuff here!
Good luck to Huk as well, pretty sure he will be in this.
The system that currently exists seems to make it very hard for people to get to code S now compared to before...I doubt that some code S players would be able to say, go through not only being at the top of ladder to be code b level and qualify for code A prelims, and then go through an up and down match.
Anyway, sounds like some great news for some fresh sc2 stars.
It's really great to know how GOM is really assisting the foreign scene. Also after watching some of the matches from last night the observer was doing an incredibly good job, to the point where they were nearly improving on what tasteless used to do. GJ GOM <3
GOM helping out the foreigners with housing is a great step in getting international diversity in tournaments. Does that housing include food accommodations as well? With EG getting a house, and TL living with oGs, the foreigners should be swarming to Korea.
Sweet news.
what meals GOM would offer for foreigners? Rice and Kimchi? not many foreigners can enjoy eating kimchi i guess.

HuK opportunity to SHINEEE!!!!!

Hey John, just as a side question - how many foreigners had signed up for previous GSL open qualifiers? How many people do you expect to be there for the Code A preliminaries?
Would be awesome if you could share some of those numbers.
That said, good job on trying to be so inclusive and facilitating players from all over the world. GSL's prestige and quality can only benefit from having as many great players participating as possible, regardless of where they're from.
What is your cut-off point for GOM's standard of "good in ladder"? It is really general and is very hard to judge, as many pros tend to play custom games more.
Anyways, good to see that GOM is taking the initiative to bring more foreign players into the Korean SC2 scene and hope that this trend would also continue in other countries.
GOM, thanks for being so awesome. I think it will be a fruitful thing to have more foreigners spice up the Korean scene that will be lots of fun for Korean natives and foreigners, both in terms of SC2 play and community. Hopefully the SC2 foreigners will behave well and be friendly, learn Korean, etc.
Great to see you guys going out of your way to assist foreigners competing in the GSL. Good job Gom!
any info on who the 4 auto code A players will be ?
It might matter for some people because they might need to go earlier / later if they are / are not given auto berth.
I do think it is unfair if code A auto berth are only given to people currently residing outside Korea as it means you penalize Huk and Co for being in Korea to prepare. I hope you pick the top 4 players who are willing and able to go in terms of skill and not on location.

and only soju that is offered is Jinro!

Great news, thanks to GOM for making it so friendly to foreigners.
Easy for dKiller, gogogo!
Thanks so much for being supportive to the foreigner scene.

I have other question. Because I didin't understand from the first post. Is there any qualifications for Code B, etc ? Because I am going to Korea soon and I want to participate. And how to register bla bla ?

You should hold a high rank on KR Ladder in order to be a code b guy... but I think you are an exception becuz ur not korean.
gonna rage if ret needs to play another foreigner or an oGs guy :| (again)
this is great news :D
i just hope alot of scrubs don't sign up and fails GSL, when so many good players could get their spots
This is pretty cool.
Only sad thing to see is maps are still the same. Wish they'd go to bigger maps already.
this is great, a player house for foreigners as they try their hand at the GSL is nothing short of amazing of GSL. Here's to a great year!
I am confused. what is the difference between Code B and the open Code A preliminary? Do the top ladder player get an advantage over people in the open Code A preliminary?
BTW, awesome news for being foreigner friendly!
I am really impressed how much love the foreigner scene does get from GOM, keep it going!
Oh wow, this is wonderful news!

Anyways, good to see that GOM is taking the initiative to bring more foreign players into the Korean SC2 scene and hope that this trend would also continue in other countries. Then pros will need to ladder more if they want to go here. You can't seriously expect GOM to subjectively evaluate every foreigner out there. That would first of all be a lot of work that they shouldn't be spending their energy on, and it would lead to plenty of complaints as well since they will never get it completely right.
Just simple fact they are opening the doors to assist in housing and practice PC is a huge feat. They completely understand that even with popularity in Korea the fact that Esports as a whole is hugely expanding. So nice to see GOM's desire right here We want as many foreign players participating in GSL as possible.
So THANK YOU for helping in the things top end players use the GSL housing and practice computers, not everyone is on a sponsored team that can afford to send players to the GSL currently. Even a majority of NA sponsored teams still have issues with housing which is obviously one of the largest barriers currently to get more people to Korea to compete in the GSL.
Sounds awesome, you kinda looped in the last paragraph by the way.

Hmm aren't the foreigners basically given the free registration status meaning their ladder ranking does not affect their registration for Code A qualifier unlike Koreans who needs to be in the top 172. And with 4 spots going to foreigner invitees too there's always going to be atleast 4 foreigners in the Code A tournament with more for every foreigner qualifying through the code A qualifiers.
Doesn't that basically mean GOM doesn't need to investigate a foreigner if try to qualify and only need to investigate for the 4 foreigner invitees?
This is such a fantastic offer for anyone in GOM's position to make. Hope some TL members take good advantage of this and make it to Code A!

I'm slightly disappointed, GOM went to a huge effort to make the tournament as fair and open as possible with the open qualifiers and now they're throwing it out the window. I don't even understand why they're using this format, is it cheaper for them to run? Is it supposed to be more fun to watch?
I can possibly understand inviting the highest ladder players to stay in the team house, but as the only form of entering the tournament? Surely pros time is better spent elsewhere than laddering?
Am I just missing something?

Coz they have such a close relationship with blizzard and this is more than likely blizzard trying to make ladder important in the comp scene

wow damn, this is pretty big from gom. Gotta appreciate it trying to make it prosper great especially in the foreign scene ! lovely

This is amazing Junkka! It would be great if GOM could work out some sort of affiliation with the MLG etc; some way to use the MLG tournaments/other euro tournaments to help you seed through for the best foreigners to fill this house. It's amazing that you guys are taking the effort to extend starcraft 2 to the foreign scene! Thanks!
And the skeptics about SC2 may start to calm down ... SC2 will be an international e-sport not just korean .. thank you GOMTV , thank you blizzard and thanks to all of us who love Starcraft 2

Can anybody clarify if foreigners will be allowed to enter into Code B / Code A Qualifier (is there a difference??) who aren't accepted into the team house? Still a bit fuzzy on those details. It's great that GOM is providing housing/practice PCs, but if another outcome of this format is that ONLY currently established foreigners or accepted foreign applicants can participate in the GSL I will be dissappointed....
But maybe I'm just misunderstanding...
Good step in the direction of objectivity. Let's hope that they use adjusted ladder points in order to correct the uselessness of normal ladder points. Unless they differentiate between/reserve spots for players of different servers this will be much harder for the people playing on the korean one (hi Liquid).
Going strictly by points can be just as biased as picking candidates individually.

But maybe I'm just misunderstanding... Well there are 4 foreigner spots in Code A and 8 spots in the house. So I guess any of the 4 who gets the Code A spot will also get a spot in the house. All others in the house would probably have to qualify just like the Koreans.
Btw does anyone know how much foreign subscribers GomTV has compared to Korean ones? This move sems to reflect taht foreign viewers are indeed quite important for Gom. On the other hand, maybe Koreans like to have some foreigners in their league, too.
Holy crap, GIVES them a training house for their visit?! That's spectacular, amazing to hear from GOM!
I think HuK got the right idea by trying to become #1 and #2 on the Korean ladder. Should guaratee him a spot.

I think the GOM house thing has been misunderstood. As I understand it, 5834 random foreigners are going to ask for housing but since their house can only host 8-10 people they'll only keep the top ranked players. They don't have computers at the moment but they'll have some soon. It doesn't say anything about meals, I'd guess you'll have to eat out or something?
Anyway, everything in this announcement sounds awesome and GOM is getting out of their way to accomodate foreigners, that's very exciting.
Great news from GOM promoting foreigners to come to Korea.
Can't wait to see who is gonna have to 8 spots.
It's interesting to know how they will compare for example 2 foreign players from different servers. Rank 10 in Europe is not equal to rank 10 in other region for example.
GOM providing a Teamhouse? Fucking awesome!!!
Keep up the great work, Junkka!
koreans reaching out to foreigners is a huge step. this is amazing seriously

keep on with good work junkka/gom

GOM, you are one kick ass company. Well done, this will be huge for the foreign scene.

GOM, Justin TV, and other organizations should be proud of how they are helping professorial gaming become a more developed sport!

GOO MOONGLADEEEE!! Do SEA proud for us!

My question is, with GSL removing 4 maps and replacing them with new ones won't making a decision based on a player's ladder ranking be kinda flawed? The Bnet map pool uses a totally different set of maps.

Moot point because no player would be a high-ranked diamond player if he won only because of the maps
Amazing concept by GOM I feel, the organization could not be more accommodating to the foreign scene.
I mean, I guess they benefit from the foreign players giving some good competition to the koreans in terms of interest and stream views, but their efforts to help said players is really impressive and benefactorial.
Nice of GomTV, really, however Scrap Station on decisive match again ...
Will Jun-kyu read me a bedtime story :3? Time to get that ladder ranking up.

nice to hear this, i really like gom and i think buying a ticket for the season is a good investment!

Doubt it. Currently having high rating only means you've been racing up to your former MMR. (ChoyafOu did that). You can have like a 20% win ratio right now, as the points were lowered by about a thousand in masters league, but the mmr stayed the same (if i understood it correctly). Everyone you face is favoured until you've caught up. Imho they should get over a good pro gamer. WhiteRa, Fenix, QXC, Dimaga, Sjow.. like one of those guys. There are obviously more, but I think that you need to be a pro gamer to keep up in GSL. Awesome initiative none the less. Jinro and John hwaiting! ;d
Would be so funny if the oGsUniden guy on the Europe server got over. Roflmao ^^
i can see so many foreign players qualifing for the CODE A soon. incontrol, sen, fluffy, huk, select, haypro, demuslim, artosis, and alot of others who will probably go to korea
jaeh it will be a great future i hope
I'm actually very happy to see that Gom is investing in a "team house" for foreigners! This will encourage them to participate!
One thing that has me confused is why Gomtv haven't added commercials to their stream. They have a lot of downtime in between games which are perfectly suited for commercials, instead of letting us stare at gamingbooths for 10 minutes where absolutely nothing is going on anyways. Espcially considering the stream is free and of decent quality.
With some of that extra income they would be able to provide housing/fund planetickets to a lot of foreigners.
This is Huk's chaaaaaaance!!!
Is there anywhere where the matches can be watched/streamed or even see live results? I'd love to follow HuK's path to ultimate victory lulz
