LeBron James hype is out of control

Mike Bianchi

SPORTS COMMENTARY

1:27 AM EDT, May 25, 2009

Now, maybe it will stop.

Or at least slow down.

Now, maybe we can turn on SportsCenter without hearing about how LeBron James might be the greatest thing to hit the NBA since birth control.

Hallelujah.

Now that the Magic beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 99-89 in Game 3 Sunday night at the amped-up Am maybe somebody will turn down the volume on this limitless LeBron LeLovefest.

It's like listening to Barry Manilow singing "Mandy."

It's like listening to Stevie Wonder singing "I Just Called to Say I Love You."

It's like listening to Paul McCartney singing "Silly Love Songs."

Barf.

Yes, LeBron's a great player.

Yes, he hit a great shot Friday night in Game 2.

But from listening to all the hoopla, you'd think it was the greatest shot since William Tell split the apple sitting atop his son's head.

It's no wonder the raucous, roaring Magic fans Sunday night felt the whole world -- ESPN, Nike, the NBA -- was on LeBron's side. One fan even held up a sign that said: "Magic's 6th Man: The Fans. Cavs' Sixth Man: The Refs."

Seriously, have you ever seen so many invisible fouls? Dwight Howard fouled out on a phantom call on LeBron. Hedo Turkoglu was called for another. During a timeout while the Magic dancers were on the floor, LeBron actually walked right through the middle of their routine. Amazingly, none of the dancers were whistled for a foul.

When asked if he wanted to comment on the imperceptible fouls on LeBron, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy replied tellingly, "No, but you can. You write a column. The league won't fine you $25,000. You guys see it. Write what you saw."

Give Van Gundy and the Magic credit. They are the only ones in the league who refuse to be LeBron's LeBootlicker. Gotta love Van Gundy barking at his team and telling them to quit being LeBron's "witnesses" during Game 1. Or Dwight actually snarling at LeBron when the two got tangled up Sunday night.

This why the Magic own the Cavs. This is why they've beaten them 10 of the last 14 times they've played. They don't kneel down and kiss LeBron's Nikes. They may give him his points (41 on Sunday), but they don't give him their genuflection.

Excuse me if I sound bitter about the LeBron LeBoosterism. True story: As Sentinel colleague Brian Schmitz and I were walking down an empty hallway in Cleveland's arena late Friday night after Game 1, a security guard started yelling at us: "Step to the side! Step to side!"

What? … Was this some sort of medical emergency? Were EMTs rushing some fallen fan to the hospital?

Not exactly.

It was just LeBron being escorted to the media interview room. And, apparently, nobody occupies the same hallway as LeBron for fear the intruders might smush the rose petals being thrown at the king's feet.

Don't get me wrong, this is not LeBron's fault. He is an exceptional player, but the fawning fans, media and refs are making everybody sick of him. A classic case of LeBron LeBurnout.

And if you haven't caught it, it's only because you haven't turned on ESPN since his buzzer-beater in Game 2. From hearing the commentators coo over him, you'd have thought LeBron had just scored the winning goal for the 1980 U.S. hockey team. The only thing missing was Al Michaels yelping, "Do you believe in miracles!"

Do you believe in hyperbole?

On ESPN Saturday, a radio host from Cleveland was interviewed about the magnitude of LeBron's shot. He actually said the shot was the greatest thing to happen to Cleveland sports since the Browns won the 1964 NFL championship. He went on to say LeBron's shot may have lifted the curse many Clevelanders believe has befallen their sports franchises.

One shot in Game 2 of a conference final against little ol' Orlando breaks a decades-long curse? Really? Coming soon: LeBron buzzer-beater fixes foreclosure crisis.

Question: Why is it when Rashard Lewis hit a game-winner, it's a good shot, but when LeBron hits one, it's a legendary shot?

"We were able to overcome the dagger (of LeBron's shot)," Van Gundy said sarcastically after the win Sunday night.

A google search of "LeBron shot" before Sunday's game, netted headlines such as, "Has LeBron James overturned Kobe Bryant's s legacy?" Or, "LeBron hits last-second shot that rivals Michael Jordan's."

Let me see if I've got this straight: M.J. and Kobe have nine championships between them, but LeBron hits a three-pointer in Game 2 of the conference finals and suddenly he's somehow in the same class as two of the greatest champions of all-time?

Stop it.

This LeBron LeBuildup is akin to Tim Tebow times 10. Like Tebow, we all recognize James as a great player and a good guy, but do we really need to hear the hyperbole ad nauseum? Remember when Fox announcer Thom Brennaman crooned during the national championship game, "If you're fortunate enough to spend five minutes around Tim Tebow, your life is better for it."

Gag.

The LeBron LeLovefest is even more out of control.

Except there is one difference between LeBron James and Tim Tebow:

Tebow has actually won a championship.

It's not that they looked tired... I don't really think that is the case. I'm sure they ARE tired... but what happened is that Denver played with a lot more energy. Basically, they cared about winning this game a LOT more. They got every loose ball that was to be had.

Another huge reason is J R Smith showed up today. This guy is streaky as fuck... he had 3 bad games, he was bound to go off in at least one game and unfortunately it was today (24 points). It sucks because the Lakers couldn't capitalize on Carmelo's off game - J R Smith and the Denver frontcourt bailed them out BIG TIME.

Not to mention Odom and Ariza were totally invisible. Kobe and Pau played very well as usual, but other people NEEEEEEEEEEEED to step up.

I mean it's ridiculous, Andrew Bynum should NOT have just 5 rebounds, that's retarded.

yeah that's what i am saying. the lakers did a horrible job rebounding because it didn't seem like they were putting much effort into boxing out and doing the work. it was caused by both the lack of energy and fatigue, which are closely related anyway. all the lakers players were admittedly saying they were tired after game 3. true, denver probably played harder because they were in the desperation mode. i think the lakers will turn it around in LA.

Honestly, I don't think this Laker's team deserves to go to the finals with the way they've been taking games off during the playoffs. Bring it every night or be ready to watch the game you could be playing from home.

The hype is ridiculous, and it's not just ESPN. Anyone in a state near Ohio has probably heard snippets about how they think the shot "restored" the city and crap like that.

Actually I take back what I said about Odom. He had 4 offensive boards. Shot terribly, but I don't remember the last time he had a play run for him.

You can't call this JR Smith performance streaky. He did most of his damage dishing it to bigs and getting to the rim. He did well because he changed his game to low risk plays - assists, dunks, shots in the paint, and a small number of open 3's.

I'd really like Denver to go to the finals just because each game they are trying a lot harder. Lakers have the tallest guys on the floor and got killed on rebounds. That's supposed to be one of their major strengths this series. They have enough 7 footers for it.

I actually like both teams. But come time for the finals if the lakers lose I would hate to hear about how they have the talent but didn't try etc because they get lazy etc. With the Nuggets even if they lost or get blown out at least they are giving it their all. Whereas with the lakers you can only count on Kobe and for the most part Gasol to try their best every game. Those 2 are saving each other this playoffs.

As for J.R. Smith ... he gets too cocky though and even when he plays well like tonight he's going to make a lot of dumb plays when there's a better option on the floor. He made some great assists though finally contributing and opening up their offense. If he can consistently play like he did tonight that would be nice. But I think it's more likely he'll be riding high and play dumb the next game.

And man that trip by D. Jones was dirty.

Nuggets played with a lot of heart all games. Now I'm rooting for the Nuggets to make it to the final.

Ughh, Dahntay Jones such a dirty player. To deny that his trip wasn't intentional makes me despise him even more. Any person with a pair of fucking eyes could have seen that it was clearly intentional. Apparently Bennett Salvatore is also a fucking moron with no eyes.

That being said, I still hate the Lakers. I just despise dirty plays that could possibly injure a player.

After every game people take it to the extreme.

If Cavs loses then Orlando is "the man" by most. If Denver wins then they are "the man".

Series are tied 2-2 as it is supposed to be and other than journalists causing drama and doubting eveything I guess it's perfectly normal for both Denver and Los Angeles. Both protected their home court and now they just have to keep working and hope to take advantage.

I would personally be more worried about Cavs. They almost show no signs of being "alive" and if Mike Brown couldn*t form a great game plan during that time they had to rest before the series with Orlando started then what makes you think he will pull a Wizard-like miracle if we are already busy in the series?

my my my, quite the impressive win by the nuggets especially with anthony making a mess of things...although they could've done better by avoiding those bonehead technicals

the lakers looked like the cavs today, with kobe really the only player getting anything going in the second half.

what the lakers need to do is to pound the ball inside a hell of a lot more than they did today. only 11 attempts for gasol?? for a guy that shoots at a high percentage 11 shot attempts is not gonna get it done. and of course there is that huge rebounding difference. the nuggets were all over the glass. the lakers need to do a better job on the defensive boards.

...and dahntay jones is such a punk wtf was that trip?!
makes me wonder why i never saw rodman's antics as dirty...proly cause i was a bulls fan

The trip was one thing, but the Nuggets took it to a whole new low when they got Kobe in a choke hold.

And notably fisher's not playing. Since brown subbed for walton, does that mean kobe's point?

And both sides are fouling too much. Too many reach ins and body contact.

The tech on Kmart should've been a double, and Carmelo's was a shitty call. Refs have been especially bad this year with techs/flagrants. Nice to see Smith finally get back on track. I hope he keeps playing like that. Melo/Billups/Smith is probably the most dangerous offense combo in the playoffs.

KMart totally deserved that technical. He literally locked up Gasol's arm and would not let go of it, and even jerked Gasol's arm around a bit by turning his own arm. What did Gasol do that would have warranted him getting a tech as well?

The tech on Melo was much more questionable.
