But the preparation takes days. This has always been true. Obama was planning on taking the whole week off--MIA in washington as a Senator meanwhile. McCain was going to take off merely from Thursday on because he needs less practice.
I hope Mississippi goes to Obama due to this.
Fucking stupid.
Don't get your hopes to high
looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
mccain needs less practice because he is better at debates?
ahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
No I don't think he is better. Obama is certainly more eloquent but McCain has simply done more.
To be fair, I was guessing that McCain was giving himself less preparation time than Obama because he felt he didn't need it.
But the fact that Obama was taking much more time off for what his aides called "debate camp" is not a conjecture. Its taken from the announced schedules of the candidates.

There is not many of us here so I am taking up the slack.
I'm guessing he will have the money because he is not instituting a nationwide health care system like Obama is. In fact, Obama' s plans were so big, that he just announced that due to the cost of the upcoming bailout, he will probably have to scale back his promises.
If you want to talk about something expensive, you have to look at health care. if the Gov't starts paying it, that is a buttload of money that has to come from somewhere.

It's because Obama and Biden are skilled orators and understand what it takes to project a winning image in a debate. McCain is an airforce dunce and he's never performed well in any debate.
A person isn't better at something because they practice less at it.
In an interview shown Tuesday on NBC's "Today Show," Obama asked, rhetorically, if he "can do everything that I've called for in this campaign." Answering his own question, he said he "probably" won't be able to fulfill all his promises "right away."
He returned to the subject later in the day. Some plans won't be deferred, including new education spending, energy research, a healthcare overhaul and his tax cut, Obama vowed. But he said he would reevaluate his agenda.
"It would be irresponsible of me to say I'm not going to take into account what things look like should I take office," he said. "And one of the big question marks . . . is whether we have an economic recovery or we slide deeper into a recession. That will have a big impact on what federal revenues are and what the budget looks like. So all those things are going to have to be taken into account."
I don't see how anyone can claim that Obama isn't a critical or responsible thinker.

A person isn't better at something because they practice less at it.
"Democrat Barack Obama studied and practiced privately with aides in a Florida hotel Tuesday in the first of three days of intense preparations for his upcoming foreign policy debate with GOP rival John McCain."
"McCain is showing more confidence with a full schedule this week that leaves less time for preparations. His advisers said they saw no reason to clear his calendar to prepare, given the Arizona Republican's decades-long experience on foreign affairs issues and his years of debating colleagues in the Senate."
"McCain plans to work with advisers on the debate between campaign events this week in Ohio and Michigan, meetings with world leaders in New York for the United Nations General Assembly and briefings on the Wall Street crisis."
Whether you or I think he is a good debater doesn't matter at all. The point of my original post is that debates take more time out of a candidates schedule than the hour of actual debate. Each candidate decides for himself how much time to take off to prepare. Those are their strategic decisions based on limited time.
Actually this is the way campaigns spin before a debate:
McCains's campaign: Obama is going to blow us out of the water, cause he is so young and eloquent. If Obama isn't absolutely amazing, then it will be a real let down.
Obama's Campaign: McCain has the clear advantage because he has more debate experience than anyone who has ever run for President (this one was actually said by Obama's camaign but in different words). If McCain doesn't completely dominate, then it will be a real let down.
Those are my words summing up what the campaigns are saying. So why talk like this? Thats the expectations game.

Alright, that's a fair enough argument for why Obama's healthcare plan may be a bad idea with the economy the way it's heading and as already mentioned, and as you pointed out even Obama has admitted that he may not be able to fulfill his promises right away if he wins the election.
However that still doesn't answer the question of how McCain plans to cover the cost of the Iraq war while still cutting taxes for everyone, neither of which he seems to show any signs of giving up (if I'm wrong then please correct me, since I haven't been keeping up with his speeches in the last month).
I hope you're not too stressed from answering all of this, as much as I disagree with you I appreciate that you at least appear to make an effort to explain/research your beliefs.
yeah or maybe mccain knows hes going to suck at debates, so why waste time?
there are many reasons mccain might not practice, but dont blindly believe the spin from his campaign
Ahh, what the heck, here is the actual quotes from the campaigns and the source:
"Debates are one of the few times when presidential campaigns loudly tout the skills of their opponent over their own candidate's abilities, and both campaigns were playing that age-old game of downplaying the expectations about their man ahead of Friday's event.
"Have no doubt about the capabilities of Sen. Obama to a debate. He's very, very good," McCain told voters in Ohio. "He was able to defeat Sen. Hillary Clinton, who, as we all know, is very accomplished. He was able to, with his eloquence, inspire a great number of Americans. These will be tough debates."
Obama spokesman Bill Burton delivered similar compliments right back at McCain, even less subtly.
"Given his decades in Washington, John McCain literally has more experience debating than anyone who has ever run for president," Burton said. "If he can't show the skills he's acquired debating foreign policy, it will be a massive disappointment."
McCain is showing more confidence with a full schedule this week that leaves less time for preparations. His advisers said they saw no reason to clear his calendar to prepare, given the Arizona Republican's decades-long experience on foreign affairs issues and his years of debating colleagues in the Senate."

If you don't mind reading something kind of technical, you should check this out:
Its just the executive summary of the results of the analysis. So its not too bad.
Here's a little piece:
"These results have strong implications for policymakers. Virtually every country in the world could increase government revenue and economic growth by reducing its highest marginal tax rates. After a period equal to an average person's work life, countries which choose tax rates to promote economic growth will have just as much government revenue and their citizens will have three times as much aftertax income as countries which choose tax rates in order to maximize tax revenues in the short run. "
EDIT: I removed a claim about Bush tax cuts because I could not find the source to back it up.
Also here is a little chart showing that tax revenue as a percentage of GDP (total sum of size of your economy) is constant pretty much no matter what you do to taxes. This shows a drop from 91% to 35% in the top individual tax rate not eliciting a change in revenue.
In other words, its not simple enough to say that you can raise taxes and thereby raise the revenue to pay for your programs anymore than you can say that lowering taxes will cause revenue to go down and making it impossible to pay for your programs.
BTW, I would like to post this chart as a picture you can see rather than a link but I am having technical difficulties. Could someone give me a tip?
Edit: It should be noted these things I am sharing are still up for debate among economists and policy people. There are good studies supporting this and also good studies finding flaws. But I think its good to share and examine the different theories.
The economy is much like the weather. There are principles we can learn about the weather, but it can still jump out and do something you never would have predicted. Likewise, it is impossible to form solidified RULES that always hold in economics (my BA is in economics and that is what I have seen).
But it is still good to know the differing theories. You wanted to know what McCain is thinking and I think this may be a part of it.
Also, here is the source for the origin of that image:
Source: Rates from Joint Committee on Taxation publication #JCX-6-01; Receipts from FY 2009 Historical Tables, Budget of the United States Government, Table 2.3.
The trick is you demand for specifics for something, tape it live so they can't take time to think and don't allow them any preparation. And when they can't..does that mean they are uninformed or that it doesn't exist?
I think that in reality its just the way being interviewed is. If you want to embarrass someone or try to make a political statement, demand specifics and allow no preparation.
Journalistic political tricks don't mean much whether they are against democrats or republicans.
Palin walked into some of the problems on her own in that interview. Couric was pretty harsh too, but it's no surpise that republicans are incredibly nervous about her debate with Biden and are hoping to delay it.
