And on the news-wire:
"Senator McCain has not voted once - not once - since May of this year. The business of government will continue, but the American people have the right to know who is best equipped to handle this crisis, not just today, but for the next four years. We can turn our attention to the crisis, but Senator McCain should not use this crisis as an excuse to hide from legitimate questions about his competence to deal with issues of our time."
"For twenty-six years, Senator McCain has contributed to the culture of entitlement and greed that has resulted in today's crisis. Now, on the one day when Senator McCain was to set out his vision of the next four years to the American people, Senator McCain decides he would rather hide in the White House than face the nation. Yet another gimmick."
It could be a brilliant move, it could backfire. Either way, we just have to wait and see =]

i think mccain must've seen something scary in his internal polling.

Good strat. Biden reaches out to Plain to take the Friday debate slot and Obama/McCain their debate slot.

I think it's a shrewd move from McCain to say that he is halting the partisan warfare and the campaign to craft a bipartisan solution to the most pressing issue of the day, and inviting Obama to do the same. Obama's campaign of course says the debate is on. It makes it look like Obama is only interested in the election while McCain is rolling up his sleeves and taking the lead on a major issue. This is a very interesting turn of events.

Possibly but this bill has been on for a week where was McCain throughout that if he knew it was a vital bill and now he is only speaking. Second Mississippi has spent MILLIONS and prepared almost a year for this, piss off the votes too much? It's what a two hour flight from there to DC, why not do both?
|
Mississippi isn't going to go blue ever. If I read wiki right Bush beat Kerry there by 20 points. It may piss voters there off, but I don't think it will with the voters as a whole since he is supposedly going to be doing something vitally important. Of course he won't be and it's a big photo-op, but it plays well. Since this story is breaking we don't know all the facts of how Obama will react.
All the news coverage on every channel is McCain's decision to suspend the campaign. It's wall to wall coverage, several stations are saying Obama's response will be soon.

goddamn republicans are good at elections, he slips out of the debate this friday and improves his image on economy leadership in one fell swoop
If you cant be good at doing it right, at least be good at saying you can.

i don't think he improved his image at all. he just solidified his image of a goddamn pussy. i thought at least he might put up a fight because it was foreign policy but hell he is more epic fail than i thought he was.

I think Obama's best move would be to call on McCain to appear at the debate and talk about issues that matter to the voters. And if McCain doesn't show up Obama should still go there and speak about the issues anyway. It can be part foreign policy, which he's been preparing for, and part talking about the bailout.
|
Obama is saying that McCain should appear at the debate and talk about issues that matter to voters. And whether McCain shows up or not Obama is still going there to speak about the issues. Obama said that at this critical time it's more important than ever for the voters to hear from their potential leaders, the very people who will be dealing with this issue after the election. Obama says that if the congressional leadership feels they need his help crafting the bill he will go at a moments notice. Obama/McCain are going to issue a joint statement on principles they agree should be worked into the bill.
1. Bipartisan panel to oversee 2. Americans as investors, all money must be repaid 3. Aid to individuals struggling with mortgages and not just big investment banks 4. No large bonus pay for CEOs/executives

But still, if the GOP has any strong point at all, historically it has been foreign affairs and social issues, but NOT the economy, education, health care, etc. Sir you are misinformed, before Clinton the Republicans had a massive advantage (in perception at least) in the economy. If you really want a source I could find one but sourcing info from non-internet sources on the internet is a pain.
I just posted the results of a poll released on September 24th. (today), that shows McCain leading in the people's confidence in all matters relating to foreign policy (and surprisingly, the economy as well). Its a few posts above. From Rasmussen.

...the debate is what one hour?
But the preparation takes days. This has always been true. Obama was planning on taking the whole week off--MIA in washington as a Senator meanwhile. McCain was going to take off merely from Thursday on because he needs less practice.
I hope Mississippi goes to Obama due to this.
Fucking stupid.
Don't get your hopes to high

To be fair, the short, jingoistic, black and white responses that McCain is prone to give when asked about matters of foreign policy do require less preparation.

mccain is a good debater in middle school, since that's his target audience anyway, those who say he is a good debater might just have a point!
