If the announcement turns out to have nothing to do with Diablo, I will laugh my head off but feel sad at the same time

But as someone who's never really had any experience with mysterious hype, things like this and the infamous I Love Bees are points of extreme interest. The power of the Internet to find things like this, it's amazing.

Unless they called that monster hydra in D2 (I havent played it much).

A Sorceress spell called Hydra. ^

Our (SC's) Hydra looks kinda like the upper head of the traditional mythical creature, so I guess that's why they called it that. Or perhaps they were given the name to capture the supposed essence of the Zerg race: for every one you take down, two more rise in it's place. :p

In any case, I'm leaning towards D3. It could be something completely different, but it's what I'm hoping most for and what the majority of hints seem to lean towards.

>.>
<.<
It would be smart of them, though, if they aren't already working on it, to make it seem like it would be D3 at the beginning of this hype to gauge peoples reactions.
Think. :)

Blizzard's Q4 profit in 2007 was 24% less than in 2006. WoW is on a huge decline.

The expansion will bring back players regardless.

Really? Burning Crusade made Blizzard lose a lot of players. A lot of people feel they don't want to do all the work all over again when Lich King comes out.

Umm...What? Blizz gained roughly 2 million subscribers after the release of TBC...

http://www.google.com/trends?q=world of warcraft
http://trends.google.com/websites?q=worldofwarcraft.com&geo=all&date=all

While this isn't completely accurate, it does work rather well. BC brought a huge loss of interest, and if you played the game at that time, you'd've seen it. Anyone who plays right now can tell you that people are leaving left and right. Blizzard might be making a lot of money, but they're also spending it. Blizzard seems to enjoy inflating numbers to the public, as well.

Blizzard wasnt the only one that quoted the stats for subscribers (which was at only 6 million a few months before release)

I did play the game at that time. Just about EVERY that was for months before that considered a 'medium' population realm or even a 'low' population realm, turned back into max population realms for months. BC brought back a ton of interest, not removed it.

However, this might not be the case for WOTLK, I'm not entirely disagreeing with you. I really don't see the third expand bringing back as many as TBC did, or expanding the population base nearly as much.

Games like Dark age of Camelot saw this problem in their later expansions, eventually the expands only prolong the life of the game by slowing the decline.

Come to think of it, that top right picture isn't consistent with the rest of the picture (maybe others, I'm not looking too hard).

Blizzard wasnt the only one that quoted the stats for subscribers (which was at only 6 million a few months before release)

Where are you getting your information? Blizzard pulls in about 200-300 million dollars (2007 earnings) in good quarters, and somewhat less in slow quarters. Subscriptions alone would bring earnings to $450,000,000 per quarter, not including the sales of games. If you estimate that Blizzard is brining in about 1,000,000 (which is an underestimate) new user game sales per year, you have almost another $10,000,000. This is without even factoring in income from sales in franchises other than World Of Warcraft.

I did play the game at that time. Just about EVERY that was for months before that considered a 'medium' population realm or even a 'low' population realm, turned back into max population realms for months. BC brought back a ton of interest, not removed it.

This was because of the change in server structure and max caps on servers. Blizzard wanted people evenly across all the realms to justify the costs they paid for bringing in new servers. No point in upkeeping a server for the same cost if it only houses 1/3 the players that others do.

However, this might not be the case for WOTLK, I'm not entirely disagreeing with you. I really don't see the third expand bringing back as many as TBC did, or expanding the population base nearly as much.

The biggest complaint I hear is that BC raiding completely sucks compared to vanilla WoW. WOTLK promises even more easy and dumbed down encounters, with more welfare gear. It didn't work for BC, and it won't work for WOTLK.

None of my information came from earnings, it all came from random websites (including worldofwarcraft.com) where blizzard released its '# of subscriber accomplishment' announcements. I recall the first one (6 million) coming about 4 or so months before the release, and the 8 million mark coming about 6 months after the release of TBC.

I'm sure you could find this archived on worldofwarcraft.com

EDIT:

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=8352 3/1/06

http://www.mmorpg-center.com/story-61-WoW-reaches-10-million-subscribers.html (10 million in january of this year)

4 Million increase, doesnt seem like TBC turned off anyone really.

I also used 2 sites other than worldofwarcraft for this info =/

Whatever the game, I hope

it is NOT an MMO.

Or it is a fucking highly successful one that sells millions which means better budget for better games!

You're just wrong. Very Wrong. I played WoW as an addict for months. I got into Arena pvp and raiding. You sound like one of those kids who's casual guild couldn't down Karazhan, so the guild disbanded and you quit WoW thinking that TBC Sucks.

I played before and after the Expansion and the Burning crusade was the best thing that has ever happened to WoW. The raid encounters are better designed, more difficult, and more fun in general. Compare Gruul and Mag to Onyxia... Compare TK to BWL... 'nuff said. The only reason I don't still play is because the game is simply TOO good. It has more potential than ever to ruin people's lives. Why? Because it's way, way, way, way too fun.

WoW was at 5 million active subscribers before expansion, and I do recall them reaching 9 million at some point after. I don't know current numbers, but TBC nearly doubled the active WoW community, made it more addictive than ever, and added an intense PvP system which now allows broadcasting Arena tournaments with prizes.

Don't forget the earnings they get from the special Arena server they created which thousands of people signed up for.

Anyone who is afraid of D3 being an MMO is just blindly prejudice. Maybe you had a friend who got Addicted to WoW. Maybe you tried it, got to level 18 or 46, got bored and quit. The fact is, When you reach the top level in WoW, and start Raiding and PvPing, it is stupidly addictive and fun. WoW is the best mmo out there by a longshot because Blizzard is capable of supporting and adding to it. If D3 is an MMO, I'm certain it will be a fucking incredible one.

The only issue I can see people having is the Pay-to-play, which I somewhat agree with. Nobody likes to pay to play, but if the game is as amazing as WoW, and requires as much support and technical maintanence, then I have no issued paying monthly.

Been through Ony/MC/BWL/AQ/NAX/TK/SSC/BT/Sunwell, but nice try. Calling yourself an addict does not give you any authority on a subject, and makes your views clearly biased and ignorant.

YOU sound like the type that started the game in BC, and can't get over the fact that things used to be better. If you're equating potential to ruin lives to success, you'd love drugs and alcohol. You should probably work on turning 21 before making such comparisons, though.

Sure, let's believe the numbers on the website when the legal documents that they have to sign give entirely different stories. The arena server adds to the income, which I did forget, and enforces what I have already said: that their real income is far less than what it would be if subscribers were at the levels that they quote on the site.

I'm not against it, I'm showing why D3 could easily be an MMO - the fact that Blizzard's income with WoW has been steadily declining, and isn't nearly as high as they quote to the ignorant masses.

You know, thinking on it, I think Blizzard is not only going to announce D3 at WWI, but multiple titles. At least one more than D3, I think. Even conservative percentages of the amount of money they make from WoW (say, plowing 20% of revenues back into the development business) should give them $200 million annually for development, which is only going to grow. SC II is basically finished, the server infrastructure is already there, there's alot more money to be spent developing uber franchises that will firmly entrench them at the top.

WoW is still a huge cash cow.

I doubt they'd set up a competing MMO just before they add an expansion to WoW.

Please, WoW revenue isn't declining, they just had their best Q4 ever. Some of you people are pretty misinformed - any YoY or MoM decline is either due to seasonality, OR the lack of release of expansions. They are growing as strongly as they ever have.
