Basically, do Americans vote almost entirely for the prospective president, and not for their party? How much choice in governmental matters do the parties in the US get?

That disappointed me too, but the main objective was accomplished; no more unconstitutional warrantless wiretaps. Once again, the FISA courts must be involved in the process.

It doesn't, there's still a judicial course of action for the telecoms, and all things considered, FISA needed to be updated. It was written in the 1970s when the CIA tracked people using paper cups and string. Compromises are how things get done in Washington. Mindcrime put it well. It sucks, but if you only vote for "perfect bills", then you won't be approving anything. The telecom part was only a side portion of the bill.

This coming from the ECONOMIC ADVISER to John McCain: “You’ve heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession,” Gramm, a former Texas senator, told the newspaper, adding that the presumptive Republican nominee will face an uphill battle fighting those perceptions. “We have sort of become a nation of whiners,” he said. “You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in ‘decline’ despite a major export boom that is the primary reason that growth continues in the economy.” Article Obama should pounce and not let go.

Barack's response was that we don't need 2 Doctor Phils. McCain just came out with a statement today, though, saying this guy doesn't speak for him only he speaks for himself. I don't know if this was as bad as the Obama campaign going back on the way his campaign is financed though.

This is coming from the economic adviser who also agrees with McCain that the economic situation of this country is simply psychological. And it doesn't help him when he says that economics aren't his strong suit in the first place. Perhaps the 53% jump in house foreclosures in June is simply all in our heads as well. Obama's flip flop regarding public financing is a minor one in which only Sean Hannity tries to pull. This IMO is a shot in the foot and McCain saying he doesn't speak for his campaign when is the economic adviser isn't really holding water.

Obama lost another point in both Rasmussen (bringing the race to a true dead heat) and Gallup (where he retains a 3-point advantage). It's still not yet enough to convince our model that anything serious is going on. Part of what's going on here, by the way, is that we've really had very light polling volume over the past week or so -- the whole notion that Obama's numbers are tanking is really just based on two surveys (Newsweek and the Rasmussen tracker). We should know more soon enough. Let's hope this doesn't continue.

McCain gets Social Security but criticizes system Also Sean Hannity hasn't even been called out by others despite denying attacks against Obama and his wife.

You realize that the old folks who have seen it all and actually bother to vote are going to agree with him, right? Young people don't bother voting. Grumpy old men and women do.

There is no discussion, it's just hand-wringing over everyone's hero, speculating his success, analyzing pundit remarks about him, etc.. Which is fine, but should probably go in a new thread. Like, "On Barrack" or something. Just tired of seeing this thread bumped :p anyone who wants to make a new thread is welcome to, i'm personally too lazy to. until then i don't see the harm in continuing discussion here - the discussion has slowed down a lot but i still like reading the stuff people have to say when it gets bumped ![]() EDIT: i do regret putting ron paul in the poll though...
