Pledged Delegates
Delegates that are acquired through the primary elections. They are awarded proportionally to the share of the vote garnered in each primary or caucus.
Superdelegates
Members of the democratic party's establishment. These delegates can support whoever they like and can change their support at any time.
There are 796 superdelegates. If neither candidate can garner sufficient pledged delegates to clinch the nomination, it is widely believed the superdelegates will side behind whoever is the "people's choice" (aka the leader in pledged delegates and popular vote).
