Is India shit today because of Ghandi?

India, with its rapid economic modernisation and urbanisation, has rejected Gandhi's economics[270] but accepted much of his politics and continues to revere his memory. Reporter Jim Yardley notes that, "modern India is hardly a Gandhian nation, if it ever was one. His vision of a village-dominated economy was shunted aside during his lifetime as rural romanticism, and his call for a national ethos of personal austerity and nonviolence has proved antithetical to the goals of an aspiring economic and military power." By contrast Gandhi is "given full credit for India's political identity as a tolerant, secular democracy."[271]

Would India be better off today if British rule had remained, similar to countries like Australia or New Zealand, which were previously shitholes? Would there be less black people in India today and more white people if it followed a similar path to Australia?

Seriously, when you think about it, why do people worship Ghandi like a God, when he was simply a left wing activist who succeeded in keeping an entire country in poverty?

I predict this thread is going to go very badly...

I don't know if 1 person who died more than 50 years ago can be held responsable for one country's poverty. Also I fail to realize how having less black people would be something good (or bad or anything). Now, I don't know much about that "Gandhi's economics" things, but it seems weird to me that even though his idea of economy isnt accepted and used, someone would blame the bad economy of India to him...

And people "worship" Ghandi because he was a wise men in general. He was a good leader and a pacifist. Few know much more than that, but that is they reason people like him.
