MOSCOW — The retribution against one of Russia’s most popular independent online news organizations, Lenta.ru, was as swift as it was unexpected. And to many it served as an ominous warning about the state of the media today as the conflict over Ukraine deepens.
On Tuesday morning, the country’s media watchdog formally cautioned the website after it published an interview with the leader of a Ukrainian nationalist organization that Russia has denounced as fascist. By afternoon, the site’s editor for the last decade was ousted and replaced by another editor viewed as more loyal to the Kremlin.
Lenta.ru, known for aggressive coverage in a news media dominated by state-owned or state-controlled outlets, announced the departure of its editor, Galina Timchenko, without explanation, but soon posted a letter of protest signed by 79 staff members, blaming “direct pressure” from the Kremlin for her dismissal.
“Over the past couple of years the space for free journalism in Russia has decreased dramatically,” the statement said. “Some publications are controlled directly from the Kremlin, others through curators, still others by editors who fear losing their jobs. Some media outlets were closed. Others will be closed in the coming weeks.”
In December, Mr. Putin dissolved the official state news agency, RIA Novosti, and now is organizing a new one under a television executive and host, Dmitry K. Kiselyov, who is best known for virulent commentary on various foreign conspiracies he and others say are threatening Russia.
“The problem is not that we have nowhere to work,” the statement by Lenta.ru’s staff said. “The problem is that it seems you have nothing more to read.”
In Soviet Russia, parallel information universe builds you.
Well according to lenta.ru the Russian government has also bought "argumenty i fakty" Russians biggest print newspaper.
Edit: To the guy above: Dude you're from Canada. I assume that means you have at least a few years of formal education. Why do you guys still keep posting this ridiculous stuff
5. The Globalists no longer have the protection of anonymity. Losing control of the flow of information has meant that the names and faces of the key players are known, and once the rule of law begins to break down it will be open season. The political awakening hasn't just reached intellectuals and traditional activists, it has also reached survivalists, military and ex-military with the means and the drive to settle accounts. The obscure players may be able to blend in with the population, but high profile characters like Zbigniew Brzezinski and the Rockefellers will have no place to hide.
Aleksey Grazhdankin, deputy head of the Levada Center. Attitudes towards Yeltsin worsened following his 1992 reforms, which lead to inflation and the closure of many businesses, he added.
Harsh politicians are always perceived better than liberal ones, Grazhdankin said: “Freedom brings uncertainty, while people prefer certainty and clear perspectives… Rights and freedoms are too abstract, and the majority of people don’t need them. First of all, people appreciate the right to social guarantees and labor.”
Interesting to see that Nicholas II is more popular than Kruschev -- I flat out dont understand this one at all.
Its nice too see some "new" views posted for a change. This , here, is gonna get heavily critized, and few pages later will be burried deep into the mainstream opinion of majority in this thread.

This is a new view? 1. Nazis paid for by the West killed protesters 2. Revolt is creation of Western puppets good friend zoe has advocated this view since November or earlier. And even he doesnt blame the Rothschilds for world's problems like the makers of this video do.

Of course it's gonna get heavily criticized, it's heavily stupid bullshit. From what was quoted from their own little manifesto or whatever it is, did nobody know about the Rockefeller family before the internet or something? Serious Badasses (TM) now know what is up and there's no way these bloodsuckers aren't gonna be held to account!

Jesus Christ these people are deluded and stupid.
you're not criticizing the video though. i think it sums up some of the under-reported parts of the conflict at least.
'fuck the eu' being the least interesting part of the nuland leak and putting focus on backlash of western backing of 'politically expedient groups' (too funny) to shape policies.
haven't heard estonian leak before, only read about it. sounded convincing.
also i can't argue with not being told about us backing of syrian rebels wrt the conflict in ukraine. i gotta give them that.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who realizes that Putin is trolling (thanks DEB), and has been for a while.
I highly doubt the European Union gives any cares about Ukraine joining the EU for economic purposes (which is the main point of the EU). This would actually be disastrous. Countries like Portugal and Greece are a huge drain on the most robust nations in the EU. Ukraine is a lot worse off than even those two aforementioned nations. Ukraine would make the Eurozone crisis a lot worse. Well, what is it? Ukraine is a political asset to the European Union and a strategic asset vs Russia to the United States.
Although Russia and Ukraine actually have very deep cultural, historical, and religious ties, Ukraine is still mostly a political asset to Russia, especially in the manner of a reaction to post-Soviet collapse NATO expansion we've seen Russia doing since Russia became a functional country again.
It's a tug of war. Politicians from anywhere can talk and bs about how much they "care" about Ukraine and Ukrainian people, but no bloc actually has Ukraine at heart.
Russia has its great political and military power and its financial elite, and European Union is leveraging on its economic strength (at least in the case of Germany, France, and Britain, although it's mostly Germany that's vocal against Russia, no surprise there). USA is invoking its strategic interests, which includes opposing any expansion of Russian influence. + Show Spoiler +
Also, mentions of Ukrainian forces preparing to attack Russian forces in Crimea are silly. Anyone with any mind in Ukraine knows that is insanity, so it isn't going to happen. And someone posted an article in this thread earlier that Ukraine can't even get its military organized at all. Disorganized 6,000-man force I believe that article stated? The active military force is apparently a hundred thousand strong, so I don't know what's going on with that.
I've highlighted just one of 3-4 ridiculous statements. The Judicator continues to post these loooooong posts filled with messages from an alternate reality. Honestly, have you already forgotten Schröder? Have you forgotten that Merkel's special relationship with Putin (they both talk each other's languages and have a direct line to each other) led to the EU and NATO not providing Georgia and the Ukraine agreements which irked Russia. Not to mention that all throughout this crisis, Germany (led by Steinmeier inside the administration) has been dragging its feet on sanctions. - they literally were the only opposing member in a number of EU votes.
I can't be bothered to fact check all of those long posts so please, PLEASE, do so yourself. This includes checking what the EU was intended to achieve, which budgets the financial aid will actually come from, etc etc.

Don't be glib. If you listened to the actual tape, you'd know that Paet was reporting on a rumour he was told, it's not like it's actually fact. Also, there was some miscommunication between Paet and the person who started the rumour. This is what Olga Bogomolets responded: + Show Spoiler +
Myself I saw only protesters. I do not know the type of wounds suffered by military people," she told The Telegraph. "I have no access to those people." But she said she had asked for a full forensic criminal investigation into the deaths that occurred in the Maidan. "No one who just sees the wounds when treating the victims can make a determination about the type of weapons. I hope international experts and Ukrainian investigators will make a determination of what type of weapons, who was involved in the killings and how it was done. I have no data to prove anything. "I was a doctor helping to save people on the square. There were 15 people killed on the first day by snipers. They were shot directly to the heart, brain and arteries. There were more than 40 the next day, 12 of them died in my arms. "Our nation has to ask the question who were the killers, who asked them to come to Ukraine. We need good answers on the basis of expertise." Mr Paet's assertion that an opposition figure was behind the Maidan massacre was not one she could share. "I think you can only say something like this on the basis of fact," she said. "Its not correct and its not good to do this. It should be based on fact." She said the new government in Kiev had assured her a criminal investigation had begun but that she had not direct contact with it so far. "They told me they have begun a criminal process and if they say that I believe them. The police have not given me any information on it."

What's wrong with his accent? He rolls the Rs like one of the bad guys from a movie out of the cold-war era and he seems to have a very calculated way of talking, as if he'd think about single words and phrases before saying them, like somebody who learned German as his second language.
This is how swiss germans ("Deutschschweizer") speak german. If I speak german, it sounds pretty much the same.

Don't avoid the question. Instead of making superficial statements, actually make a claim we can verify, what did that leak teach you.
For the German speaking people Anne Will - Putin weiter auf dem Vormarsch you see the German view of the crisis pretty well represented. The guests are Phillip Mißfelder (CDU), Klaus von Dohnanyi (SPD), a (former?) German correspondant in Moscow and a Ukrainian journalist.
In short Germany does not want war, sanctions will not be effective as Russia is prepared for them and in addition they will hurt Germany just as well. So it is needed to talk and make compromises. Neither side will get all they want.
It is also confirmed what I stated in my previous post, that the Soviet Union was promised NATO would stop expanding at the German border. Klaus von Dohnanyi a friend of chancellor Merkel said even Condoleezza Rice stated this in a book of hers and she is not known to be pro-russian as far as I know.
At minute 55:10 you see a video showing the leader of Svoboda now in the government in Kiev. In an old video from 2004 this leader is shown talking to fellow Ukrainians and I quote the German translation "Fetch your guns. Fight against the Russian pigs, the Germans, the Jewish pigs and other insects. Fight for our Ukrainian homeland."

The police have not given me any information on it."
glib my posting style alone. ofc they scramble to save face afterwards, but not as interesting, and ofc you have to employ some semblance of critical thinking, but leaks are a more interesting source of info than your regular @what-have-yous #MyFavoriteColor, and probably as close as we plebs will get to the juicy stuff atm.
So what did you learn from that leak?
are we doing the interview right now?
Don't avoid the question. Instead of making superficial statements, actually make a claim we can verify, what did that leak teach you.
i'll repeat my 'claim' since it didn't stick the first time: i thought paet sounded convinced that the opposition was behind the shootings. good luck with the verification process and you're not getting into my apartement btw.
