I think this is Putin saying : This is still Russia's backyard and you are not allowed to take over power in ex soviet republics and put NATO bases there.Im still in charge here and you can go fuck yourselves. Risking sanctions, economic hardship and even war just tells how serious he is. Changing Crimea status is just a bonus, and it helps proving his point. This is something every great power would do.Just imagine what would happen if US enemy tried to take over a nearby country....oh wait Cuban missile crisis, there was almost ww3.

Америка готова действовать вместе с Россией "против любых хулиганов и бандитских выходок", заверил госсекретарь source: http://itar-tass.com/mezhdunarodnaya-panorama/1016059 (via http://osvita.mediasapiens.ua/material/28257 screenshot is also there) Translation: USA is ready to act together with Russia "against any hooligans and criminal acts", assured the Secretary of State This is either a (hilarious) mistake or a propaganda trick.

Yeah problem is Russia isn't a great power any more. The stock market is already crashing. Gazprom alone lost 45 billion in market capitalisation. This is going to cost Russia far far more than what they will gain , even if they keep Crimea.

Putin wants to make us poop our pants and be paralyzed and go as far as he can without getting a Western military response then we'll do the same to the Russian economy although unless the West puts real economic sanctions on Russia the hiccup today in their stock exchange and the weakness of the ruble will just be passing moments. The US didn't invade Cuba in 1963 Mr. "History professor." LeMay and some of the others on the Joint Chiefs wanted to nuke Russian flotillas and send the Marines into Havana but Kennedy went for a "quarantine" and real, actual diplomacy instead.

For a source. What is going on? There has been multiple confirmations and denials now. Perhaps the ultimation was not official or a bluff and was never intended to be revealed?

But while the Ukraine leadership may not be the smartest in their decisions, they surely learned from Georgia... Rushing in, guns blazing, won't help their cause... And as long as they do nothing, the Russians have to act first... Which they have a hard time to justify without any reason from the Ukrainian side... And Russia can't do this standoff forever...

Historically there have been quite a lot of battles in which a smaller force won against a bigger one, especially in defensive scenarios. Then again there were also a lot more in which the smaller force lost...

With ground, air and naval bases already established. Both bordering Ukraine and inside Ukraine. Ukraine is also noted for flat rolling plains, as opposed to dense tropical forests, and an environment that most Russians are naturalised in. There is not a hope in the world for Ukraine alone if Russia decides to destroy Ukrainian military forces.

"Leave in 10 hours, or russians storm your bases" They will leave. If the ultimatum wasnt official or revoked. Russia will claim : see they left, our action was right + the take crimea without bloodshed. Actually one can say putin is a fucking genius, while western politicians are stupid blokes who can not do anything facing a real problem. Obama/Kerry because they only could answer with military forces, Merkel/Steinmeier because 37% of gas used in germany comes from Russia......

Putin IS a fucking genius, even someone like me (who does not actually like him) can't deny this. Either way: this ultimatum came from Black Sea Fleet, right, not from any official (you know what i do mean) source?

It's either that or it was an actual fake started by an Ukrainian news agency for whatever reason. Our best bet is to assume nothing is true until the UNSC meeting later.
