I was alerted to this by a member of the battle.net forums and I just had to share it with my freinds at Team Liquid., just another reason why you now have to be careful when you tell someone that you play video games
Just an interesting video someone took where CNN was talking about the recent school shooting. Trying to link Adams violence towards the fact he played Starcraft 2 in his tech club at school. Of course they brought on one of the biggest jokes in the scientific community in order to get some scientific insight on the matter.
Honestly I think this man is full of bullshit, do you think the American public is gullible enough to believe all this "video games are evil" stuff or will they see right through it like us at Team Liquid?

I believe that a very vocal and gun loving part of the American public are this gullible yes.

How do we prove to them this is not true? >.<
People who are social rejects/outcasts do tend to gravitate towards video games. That's a fact. What the media is willfully ignorant of is the difference between correlation and causation.

There's a lot of people who believe this shit, because a lot of Americans are incapable of abstract reasoning (i.e. being able to draw their own conclusions from the information being presented to them), and the media at large makes no attempt to present them with an accurate view because terrifying people sells.
do you think the American public is gullible enough
It's not about gullibility. It's just ignorance pure and simple. There aren't many soccer moms out there that have played video games, especially ones like Starcraft.
Really though, people just want to feel like they can explain something that is difficult to explain. It is hard to fathom true mental illness, so we blame things we can fathom, like guns, or video games. People also want to feel that they have some control over the uncontrollable, which means controlling things we can't control, like mental illness, by controlling things we can control, like guns and video games.
Hmm...let's look at two things: Starcraft and CNN's coverage of mass shootings (e.g. Aurora, Breivik, etc.). Which one of these is more likely to motivate someone to mass-shoot?
This is coming from the same news network that interviewed 6-year-old peers of the victims a day after the shootings. It's really disgusting how far our news stations will go to raise those viewer counts nowadays, particularly CNN.

Well, look at the marine you guys, what kind of example is that giving to the user. They take drugs and then fucking kill everything, they might be onto something here...
But seriously, mainstream media is so ignorant it makes me sad
They didn't "blame" it, but they tried to make a bit of a connection. That old man made a very vague point about media violence, saying nothing specific about Starcraft or even video games, for the most part. What seems funny to me is that RTS games seemed to be one of elements of sanity and sociability for this guy. His friends would come over to play RTS at his house. He was a member of a tech club at school (likely due to a love of interactive media). It's really fucked up how the media just ride the fuck out of "the blame game" for days on end, while never actually accomplishing very much (which I guess is a bit of a good thing, since knee-jerk responses to current events are never appropriate).

Look at the baneling: Suicide Bomber that takes down as many enemies as he can with his dying act.
To quote Morgan Freeman...or not as it turns out, but it's still an excellent take:
"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.
It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.
CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.
You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."
So no, CNN, Starcraft is not the problem...YOU are.
Honestly, just another ploy to attract viewers into the video games cause violence debate. The sheer amount of ignorance on both sides, the media and populace, is what fuels this debate. The fact that there are little to no shooting incidents in Korea, where StarCraft was a near-national "sport" at one time is just one piece of evidence. Or how about how StarCraft and WarCraft aren't even shooting games. Just another excuse to place the blame on other sources than American's love affair with firearms or the social issues like the inability to work with mental disorders or stress well.

so why is idra not violent, he rages all the time lol They should watch bowling for columbine and especially the marilyn manson part where he express his thoughts on why the school shooting happened in columbine, definitely a smart guy.

Morgan Freeman is just awesome, and i read all of that in his voice aswell.
I'm just glad sc2 got some publicity. It's usually WoW that gets mentioned with the mass murders. There was a bunch of inane bs flying around about WoW after the incident in Norway for example. The shooter guy did some raids as it turned out.
Because why would a mainstream media organization report based on FACTS when they can just bring in some stupid pundit to make a meaningless rant???
CNN/FOX/MSNBC are just completely unwatchable, they honestly have no journalistic integrity--they just care about what will net them the most viewers and thus the most money.
Nothing was funnier to me than yesterday morning watching the host of a show try to blame the guns of war game (gears of war) and our violent culture for a mass shooting and saying we shoudl legislate that away.

Yeah! Starcraft is also the cause of terrorism!
it all makes sense now
Time to uninstall guys, before we all end up going batshit crazy. Well, I'll keep playing to see how it pans out, but heed CNN's warning.
I've already placed my bet on Far Cry 3 but I lost this time. In the 2009 Winnenden shooting, Far Cry 2 was blamed for the lunatic German kid's behaviour, and FC3 is about craziness.
Dumbest thing I ever heard, let's ignore the doomsday theory believing, gun crazed mother of the killer and blame it on a game that doesn't even remotely simulate the actions performed. The logic of the american media is nowhere to be found.

Surveillance camera footage showed him stutter-stepping down the halls.
