If "hand[ing] total power" to Republicans looks like what we're currently going through, then it was something we absolutely needed to do as a nation. Think of it as an long overdue sequence of noise reduction and signal reiteration.

This makes me kinda sympathetic for Trump. I once contemplated how an airline pilot would handle the situation if he was in the middle of overflying the Atlantic suddenly finding out that he doesn't want to continue flying the plane, because somethign like that would happen if I were a pilot.

I have no sympathy because this guy was told over and over again he had no idea what being a pilot was like by people with experience piloting, who told him he would definitely hate it, and did it anyway while telling everyone he'd be the best pilot ever.

As for NK, I suspect Trump wants nothing more than a good excuse to bomb some North Korean bases and get his numbers up. Luckily cooler heads seem to be prevailing.

Can someone explain to me how the Republican Party got started?

ikr. It is how it is and was and always will be. Accept and embrace your corporate overlords already.

No but seriously, He's more popular than they are, if he waits for the right moment it could work. A significant number of Democrats (republicans too) could just as easily vote progressive if it meant full coffers and winning elections. It's a small number within the party that directly benefit or ideologically agree with the whole neoliberal thing they have going.

GH don't embarrass yourself further by adding yourself to the roster of fools who promote third parties in a two party system. It's been tried plenty of times, what you get is Maggie Thatcher winning a landslide, modelling herself on Reagan and engaging in class warfare.

In 1981 four of the most senior figures in the British Labour Party defected and founded their own party, the SDP (now the Lib Dems). In the 1983 election Labour got 8,456,934 votes, 27.6% of all votes cast. The SDP got 7,780,949, 25.4% of all votes cast. The Conservatives got 13,012,316 votes, 42.4% of all votes cast and a colossal majority in Parliament, 61.1% of all seats. They actually got a lower share of the votes than they had in the preceding election, down from 43.9%.

It's not just theoretically impossible, the theory that says that the divided vote will fuck the voters over has been shown to be true plenty of times.

The SDP (Lib Dem) got fucked over and over until 1997 when they ran a coordinated campaign with Labour, the party they splintered away from, where Labour voters would vote Lib Dem in Conservative seats where Lib Dems were second and Lib Dem voters would vote Labour in Conservative seats where Labour were second.

That you're so arrogantly sure that it can't happen reminds me of something....

Democrats are collapsing in on themselves, and that's why they spastically attacked Bernie over the Mello thing. They are scared he is taking control of the base, and they're right. It's a small but vocal minority within the party with animosity toward Sanders, but nearly unanimous distaste in corporate media and people are putting that together.

With just the right spark the Democratic party could easily combust into a flaming garbage heap with politicians fleeing toward anything that isn't them.

No doubt the cards are stacked against such a thing, but if I were you I'd take a break about being too sure about what's politically possible.

So Bernieites needs to take control of it from within, the same way Blair did with New Labour. They need to challenge Democrat incumbents in primaries and beat them with their better grassroots support so that the argument "we're a broad coalition, get on board and get left behind" is levied at the Clinton Democrats, not the Bernie Democrats. But splintering has been tried many times before. The majority are politically apathetic and vote on party lines, they're not about to stop voting Democrat just because Bernie divides the party. The brand is worth something, change the product, keep the brand.

If Bernie ran a popular, efficient, progressive party while the Democratic rump was literally just Clinton muttering "Russia" to herself over and over the best possible result attainable for the Bernie party would be something like 40% Bernie, 40% Republican, 20% Democratic. But in the 1983 election I eluded to earlier the Labour rump ran a manifesto popularly known as "the longest suicide note in history", promising unilateral nuclear disarmament, immediate withdrawal from the EC (now EU), renationalization of heavy industry (British Aerospace, ship builders etc), abolition of our higher Parliamentary house and other batshit insane shit and they still got 25% of the vote. Meanwhile the SDP, who were largely identical to what would become New Labour, got 23% of the vote, which is amazing for a brand new party, and handed total power to Thatcher.

People vote for the brand.

People also vote for the opposite brand, and hate the brand they do not vote for as much as they like their own. The level of polarization between the brands is so high these days, even higher as it was during the civil war. People who are now entrenched in their parties are unlikely to switch brands even if the other party would obectively better represent their interests. At the same time, there's an ever growing group of people that detest both brands.

If there was a third brand, a new brand, without the baggage of the old, then perhaps some of those entrenched people would be more likely to switch, and it might attract a lot of people who are currently disgusted by both parties. Especially if this new brand is headed by an exceptionally popular politician. It obviously wouldn't happen overnight, and it might take an election cycle or three to come to completion, but I think it could be worth it if it broke the extreme levels of polarization that we see today.

The Democrats basically already handed total power to the Republicans in November, and are utter shite in their opposition to Trump, so there's not much to lose at this point.

If you think this is the Republicans having total power you're delusional. Sure, they control all three branches but their majority is not so big that they can steamroll internal dissent and refuse to endorse candidates for office that don't follow the party whip. They weren't able to take away healthcare from the poor, for example. This is narrow control of all three branches, Thatcher in 79 to keep using the same example. What you're threatening is Thatcher in 83, and that's when she really got going.

Three election cycles is a long time to wait for the new party to become popular, especially given that the Democrats would go New Labour and take the same path as the Bernieites after three defeats due to the same causes and then you'd still have two near identical parties and a divided vote. Which is exactly what happened in the UK.

"Did you hear about this thing called e-sports? Apparently the Koreans are really good at it let me tell you. Big league good at it! Now we've got this kids, these you know, kids, well maybe not kids, but young guys you know? And they're, they're trying to be the best, and they could be the best! They have been the best! They win all the time but then the koreans, they win instead! And this is a big problem, a big big problem. Now I want to know, why can't we win? Why aren't we winning? We used to be winning, we used to be the best but now the Koreans are better? I just can't believe it. There needs to be something there, and, and I'm gonna have to look into it cuz there's definitely a problem. Part of the problem is that the Koreans take over what we work so hard on here in America! We need to let Korea know that we won't stand for it. I'm gonna have to call them and we're gonna have to talk about it, so that they don't just take all the games for themselves. I'll get to the bottom of this, and everyone will be saying "wow, look at that, we're winning again" and everyone will ask "how'd he do that?" and I'll tell you all about it when its over. And you'll be amazed. Trust me!"

should note that South Korea views the free trade agreement as better for the US than for themselves.

Plus apparently now Trump wants a billion dollars for THAAD.

but hey at least this will make the Korean presidential race more interesting.

I bet that is a common theme across all nation views of free trade agreements. The grass is always greener, so on and so on.

Edit: He wants a billion dollars because we gave them a missile system? I don't think he understands that these arms deals were made a very long time ago and we always get something we want when we make them. Like the ability for our military to operate out of that nation if a conflict arises in that region.

The same will happen every other time he had a stupid idea about a foreign nation.
He gets on the phone with them and they bash his head in with reality until it sticks.

I did not believe we would be more embarrassing on the national stage than the GWB years, but I stand corrected. And people claimed we looked weak under Obama.

In one of Hillary's GS speeches she was making a pretty big fuss about how Obama looked like a loser because he couldn't attend an important Asian economic summit - where Putin and Hu Jintao among other important leaders of Asian markets had attended - because his international flight office was inoperative due to the government shutdown. So the US didn't attend cuz incompetence.

Trump probably topped that ten times over already though.

Yeah... right up until you remember that the US had just dragged Europe into a war based on lies that they (the US) knew were not true.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump told Reuters on Thursday he will either renegotiate or terminate what he called a "horrible" free trade deal with South Korea and said Seoul should pay for a U.S. anti-missile system that he priced at $1 billion.

In an interview with Reuters, Trump called the five-year-old trade pact with South Korea "unacceptable" and said it would be targeted for renegotiation after his administration completes a revamp of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico.

He blamed the U.S.-Korean trade deal, known as KORUS, on his 2016 Democratic presidential election opponent, Hillary Clinton, who as secretary of state promoted the final version of the trade pact before its approval by Congress in 2011.

"It is unacceptable, it is a horrible deal made by Hillary," the Republican Trump said. "It's a horrible deal, and we are going to renegotiate that deal or terminate it."

Asked when he would announce his intention to renegotiate the deal, Trump said: "Very soon. I’m announcing it now."

Trump's comments stunned South Korean financial markets, sending Seoul stocks <.KS11> and the won currency into reverse even as the country's economic outlook has started to brighten.

South Korea's foreign ministry said Seoul would continue to explain to the Trump administration the benefits of the free trade deal. Washington had not officially filed a request to Seoul to renegotiate the agreement, it said.

The president is finally starting to make sure we aren't getting shortchanged for our considerable military aid abroad and our horribly one-sided trade deals. Hopefully the South Koreans won't talk him out of this one.

This makes the whole North Korea circumstances seem very odd and wondering if like the whole thing here has been a strong arm tactic where Trump's Admin first Saber Rattles with North Korea, then turns to South Korea and pushes on them to renegotiate for protection.

I don't have much of an opinion on the actual idea of renegotiating but the context & timing of doesn't seem like it will endear any good will long term.
