Presidential elections have more than 2 options so someone protesting Hillary Clinton doesn't have to vote Trump. I don't think applying the typical protest vote explanation works here. It's definitely a "who do i hate more" / lesser of 2 evils vote. In this kind of mindset, you have to vote for the person you think will have the most chance to upset the candidate you hate. People who might have voted 3rd party or not at all are showing up to vote against the candidate they hate by casting a vote for the other candidate who actually has a shot to win. But who knows.

Saying Sanders would have demolished Trump just says to me that Trump is actually a truly horrible candidate who only had a chance because Clinton has a huge optics problem.

partially relative, partially absolute. even on an absolute scale one can make a decent case for it. on a relative it's of course very easy to make the case for it. this election just makes it all the easier to prove the point of course, given how well documentedly unfit trump is.
