There are a lot of people who are on the fence. Might seem hard to believe, but if you're in a swing state, there's a lot of distaste for both candidates. Good news for Hillary is I think she gave people a lot of reasons to like her in terms of demeanor, poise, and knowledge. She was awkward a couple of times but she nailed it more. And she managed to articulate a lot of nuanced, intelligent positions on the whole range of issues that Lester Holt brought up. Trump had to change the subject several times, Clinton had the know-how to stay on topic. Trump was kind of coherent on trade, which is definitely a core issue for swing state voters, so that's okay for him. The problem is that he didn't show any concern for unions or other systems that exist to ensure that workers are actually earning a living. No guarantee he wouldn't support so-called "right to work" legislation, which actually makes it possible foreign contractors to come in and underbid for specific contracts. Which brings up the bigger issue with him: he uses buzzwords to communicate the sentiment, but he has no actually substantive suggestions. As the evening wore on, that became more and more apparent. The questions were specific, and in order to answer them, he had to BS; he took several steps either sideways or backwards to make vaguer, more general statements just to have something to say. Hillary started out doing something similar, but even when the questions got tougher, she could give a specific, detailed answer without flying off course. I actually think Holt did okay; he couldn't stop either candidate from going on and I'm not sure anyone can keep Trump on topic, but for the most part, he didn't let unanswered questions lie. | ||
