That's literally been our statement of incredulity ever since Trump started running for president.

Why can't we use nukes, they're just sitting around collecting dust is so far beyond the pale of anything he's said up to this point. The man isn't fit to run a bake sale let alone the most powerful country in the history of earth, he's proven that every single day. But let's bust out the nukes cuz we got em?! If the man actually said that I don't even know where to begin honestly.

I did hear on the Slate Political Gabfest (I think) that essentially, the NAFTA agreement screwed over the manufacturing industry of the midwest, and todays economical minds in the US has nothing for all the disenfranchised people there. I.e. the jobs are gone, they're not coming back and you're on your own. Good luck. This is seems like a big failure of american politics, and is a severe negative for Clinton as she and her husband were among its supporters (although NAFTA had bipartiasan support, didn't it). I agree, those are very convincing points he made.

Guys guys, it's obvious Trump asked about the nukes to test the FP expert. The FP expert obviously failes to make the cut.

The point is IF Trump actually said "If we have the nukes why can't we use them?" 3 times (and at this point that's just hearsay by Joe what's his name) then Trump should be under involuntary psychiatric evaluation.

Probably true (I have no idea), but can it be helped on a federal level, or is it purely the states responsibility?
As it is, I can understand a feeling of betrayal from the disenfranchised voters (although I don't share their sentiments) when they lose the secure future that their parents and grandparents had.

One of the root problems is that the Republicans in those states demonize government and champion “the freedom to govern themselves”. So they refuse federal assistance or programs to preserve that freedom, but the voters are the ones that suffer.

To be fair to Trump, he seems to be incapable of making a statement without repeating himself at least three times so number of repetitions shouldnt be a factor.

There's definitely culpability on the part of both the states and the Feds, all I'm saying is that a singular focus on NAFTA leaves the picture incomplete.
It's funny that you mention generational differences because older folks are significantly more likely to vote down tax increases, deregulate business, and otherwise shrink government anyway they can, particularly in Midwestern states hit hardest by NAFTA and the death of manufacturing in the US. In many ways, those disenfranchised voters have their parents and grandparents to blame in the first place

I think at the federal level maybe they can help usher people the right way. The problem is in certain areas you're not going to get elected if you're anti whatever the local industry is, even if its a completely dead end rotting corpse of an industry. If coal is the state industry you're not going to get elected if you're seen as anti-coal even though coal has zero future. So the state rides the coal industry into the ground and then everyone is left with no money, no savings and no prospects. You can't really blame people for voting for the guy who is going to keep them employed in the short term, its natural. You would hope local politicians would have more foresight and say "This is great but it won't last forever, so we need to start switching the tracks gradually over to a different prospect for you guys" and the people wouldn't see it as an attack on their way of life so much as an inevitability of a changing world and go along with it. Maybe people at the federal level can be that voice of reason and try to coax people to new pastures. Be the advisor that tells them you need to diversify your bonds.
