I'll put it this way: it's his best hope.

It is pretty close I think. If the GOP had gone to a contested convention, and the nomination had gone to Cruz (or anyone who is not Trump), this would have fractured the GOP, possibly beyond recovery. The angry tea party/ultra conservative types will never forgive the party leadership/party "insiders".
They are actually quite fortunate that Trump won decisively.

Finally, a specific xDaunt general election prediction!

Very bad as a general election candidate, and he would have lost anyways even if he wasn't because of the Bush fallout, but he didn't seem to split the party (the Obama-Hillary split was more notable).
The fact that Trump is the winner when he goes against a significant portion of what the R party stands for, is kind of an issue. He's much more liberal than most of them. Why keep people saying this? He isn't anything, he is a reality TV billionaire and contradicts himself every second sentence. There is absolutely no basis to make any claim about what Trump will do, which is probably enough reason to not vote for him in the first place And yet nonsense beats out whatever else the other R candidates are selling. What does that tell you? He is somewhat consistent on a few issues, at least broadly: fewer trade deals and less outsourcing, lower FP involvement, the wall/remove illegals, and making America great again. This is because the GOP all the lowest approval ratings in the history of the party, a total lack of leadership, lack of direction, inability to pass any bills or legislation. And they have been like this for 4-6 years.
Trump won in a field of the biggest losers the GOP could throw out there. This is the game group of people who didn't think Romney wasn't going to get dumpstered election night. Its easy to win against a group of people with no vision or leadership skills.

Ok the bolded parts:shitting their pants is a matter of speaking off course but am pretty sure the democrats would have preferd cruz. And I do think that the closer we will get to November, the more the democrats will be starting to worry.
As for being in a bigger mess then the republicans,No not realy I would say its about equal. I do realize this forum is a stronghold of democratic conservatives who mostly support Clinton. Quick to point out the failures of the republican party without looking at potential problems in their own party. There is a big gap between the younger generation of democrats and the establishment, bernie did prove that at least to me.They can still unite in their "hate" against trump but once the common enemy is gone the difference will surface. Maybe it will even surface this election,it depends on how loyal sanders supporters are to Clinton.
The Democratic Party would have definitely preferred Cruz because it would have been an easier win; I agree with you. But really, this guarantees that we won't have a Republican in the White House (neither Hillary nor Trump is a Republican). Even if Trump wins, which would be awful for our country, it's the Republicans who are going to take the rap for him, and surely Democrats will come out looking just fine. Democrats either win a third Obama term (Hillary wins) or they win a free four years to trash the Republican party (Trump wins); they'd prefer the former, but I don't think Trump is as hellbent in undoing as many of Obama's policies as Cruz would do. Ten steps backwards isn't as bad as twenty.
Also, I'm not sure why you think the Democratic party is in a mess, let alone a bigger mess than the Republicans. Save for a minority of young and stubborn Bernie supporters, the Hillary and Bernie camps and voters have already started uniting on the same front (Liz Warren and a bunch of other Democrats have been very vocal about organizing the supporters together and voting for the eventual victor of the Democratic primary). Yes, it's split 60-40 (or whatever) in favor of Hillary, but she's moved left (thanks to Bernie) and both candidates could certainly govern our country far better than any of the countless Republican primary dropouts/ Trump/ Kasich. The Republicans have no identity at the moment; the toughest thing that the Democrats need to do right now is figure out who the ideal runningmate for Hillary would be... enthusiasm/ charisma + slightly less establishment/ more idealistic = pretty much guaranteed victory in November imo. Or hell, just pick Joe Biden again lol. (He's probably too old though tbh.) Can we steal Justin Trudeau? This made me wet (for a politician): + Show Spoiler +

We know it's not entirely original. But you know what, he bothered to make an effort to show that as a politician, scientific development is important on his agenda. AND more importantly he is using his position as a famous person to show that science can (and should) be understood by everyone, and that it is not just some theoretical castle in the sky for scientists.
Now take a long look at the alternatives in the USA. Where politicians actively deny science, and promote a culture of anti-intellectualism that allows idiots to be in charge of the country.

The republicans are going to nominate a guy who earnestly thought that the birthers were onto something. I don't know what I expected but it's kind of pathetic. Lamest part is watching Republicans roll over and die while some buffoon hijacks their party.

Hey guys, I am kind of confused right now. I heard that Donald Trump is going to be the main opponent of Clinton for the presidential election. lol
As a canadian, I watched 2 or 3 of his speeches/debates, and honestly, I thought the guy was a comedian or something. What’s happening guys? Why is he the front runner of a major party, do people really voted for this dude ;O. Maybe I missed something, I dont know… On the other hand he is pretty funny, I must admit. I almost died laughing the last time I heard him, I thought his goal was to entertain people though….. That’s why i’m like wtf right now ;o
I guess it’s a free win for Clinton then?

1 of NY state's most powerful politicians is getting 12 years in jail for millions in kickbacks http://www.reuters.com/article/us-new-york-corruption-idUSKCN0XU0TL?il=0
if it was more than $25 million i'd tell him to give half of it back and let him skate.
what can i say.. i'm soft on crime.

USA has a bit of a history of entertainers becoming big time leaders. Jesse Ventura and Ronald Reagan come to mind. from what i've read about these 2 guys they did a good job.

No it is not a free win. Trump invokes a sort of nationalism that has been festering beneath the surface. Get rid of foreigners that are invading America. Bring back jobs that Americans deserve. Plays into his brand of individualism (fuck you, get mine), and playing the macho-man card (said many sexist remarks to prop himself up). He is the nominee for being the president of the United States, and is foul-mouthed, crude, and swings his statements in literally minutes, saying whatever pops up in that brain of his. It is not even that he has put any rational thought into his statements, he says it because he can, and will. That being said, he is quite street smart, and knows how to pick his fights.

Well, polls for all future R primary races are now worthless. I'm quite curious how it will all turn out in a two-man race. Will Kasich lose to the ghost of past contenders again?

Kasich is like 4th in a 2 man race.
